I love eating out & I am not put off by the whole tipping thing. If you don`t like to tip, stick with fast food & leave it at that. Otherwise, suck it up & quit being such a f*cking tightwad. Wait staff are human beings, each one is different, & they have varying strengths & weaknesses. It was the snide note about God that was just uncalled for. The pastor was just being a rude b*tch. I`m sure she`s had better days, but this was not one of them. I feel for the person who lost her job; it`s never fun getting getting fired.

Writing in a tip of $0 doesn`t mean there was no tip. Just going to throw this out there, I also record a tip of $0 but I leave a tip in cash on the table especially if I have received good service. That way the waiter/waitress can decide what to do with it.

Some restaurants (in Canada at least) put all the tips into a single fund and divide it up among all the staff at the end of the night including the chefs and dishwashers. I base my tips on the quality of the service so why should my tip go to the dishwasher if the waitress went above and beyond?

Also, there are tax implications. Having worked minimum wage through high school and university, I would have killed to be able to pocket my income without declaring it on my tax forms. Most wait staff declare considerably less on their taxes than they actually make.

Wow, the inability of some people here to read the article, or pay attention to the image, or have any basic comprehension beyond the headline always amazes me.

She IS a pastor and she crossed out the mandatory tip and wrote in 0.

Ever notice restaurant owners chilling in there own establishment like they`re dratin tony soprano, lookin over the place like they`re a dratin king and you are the peasants.. well if you`re so dratin ballin why don`t you pay your god damn employees better you stupid drat.. at one time you tipped because the person serving you was likely a student and needed a lil help, now its part of the yearly income of that position.. its gotten out of control. i know i know.. just don`t go out to eat, and i don`t..

I absolutely LOVE it when servers get blamed for stuff they have no control over. *sarcasm* This person didn`t design the receipt before printing it out, so to whoever was talking about how the additional tip line makes you feel bad if you don`t put anything on it, it`s not our intention. Usually, servers do not have a choice whether or not you get gratuity to your bill. Even though the restaurant I work at no longer has gratuity, when we did, it was automatically put on the bill if more than 7 guests were on the table. It`s right in the same boat as people giving bad tips because they didn`t like their food. The server didn`t cook it, and the cook isn`t the one getting the tip. If you don`t like something about your visit other than the service, then you should be tipping appropriately.

He signed his name as "Pastor whatever." In addition, the person who submitted the image explains that this was just a portion of the total bill for a table of 20, which means the 18% tip is automatically put on the bill.

I`m not one for automatic tipping, (prefer to tip based on level of service) but in the case of that many people, I`m fine if they do it.

Congress has not approved an increase on tipped minimum wage since 1991. In some states, the minimum tipped wage is $2.35. Tip well, you cheap sons of bitches. Many of these people are artists or college students trying to better themselves.
In this case, if you don`t meet market demand, then you are a leech.

If they are going to force you tip, they should have to post it on the front door. Frankly I hate having to tip for bad service, and places that force you, are those places, cause they know they don`t have to even try.

i really don`t like it when they put an additional tip line when there`s already a good tip being charged. no matter how big the required tip is, not putting additional tip makes people look cheap.

i agree with larry david about not paying additional tip. i`ll gladly pay 20% or 30% if it`s required but don`t look down at me if i don`t pay additional.

no where does it say that this is a pastor.. i think more information is needed. anyone can `claim` to be someone else.. i can claim to be a doctor even though im not. I`m thinking this is either one of 2 things, someone who hates faith in God and wants to fan the flames of hate, or the waiter/someone who hates faith in God, printed off a bogus receipt and filled in some bogus info and uploaded the picture to the internet to fan the flames of hate.

for all the non-nice individuals that dont believe in tipping, guess what. in your country you are tipping the server. your food just costs around %20 more to pay the server. you are still paying it regardless. so stop being rude about it. dont want to tip? go to a fast food joint.

and if you live in the US and still tip under 15-20% guess what. you are a cheap son of a bitch. go back to your trailer park and eat hot pockets instead of spending your money on real food and screwing someone else over because you choose to be cheap and not tip. face it, you are a horrible person. end of discussion.

europeans and others that dont live in a tipping society, you have no word in this conversation so shut up already. we get it, its different where you live. now shut up.

He gives God 10%? What does God need your money for? Are you really giving it to God? Just because you gave money to a church doesn`t mean God is using it. What he REALLY means is that he gives 10% to something resembling a charity, but apparently it`s OK with him to give money away for nothing but not OK to give it as a reward for hard work.

Calm down everyone. I also used to believe that you shouldn`t need to be tipped for doing your job, but realising that the min. wage for wait staff in the US is indeed s.hitty, then I have no problem with tipping if I was ever in the states. The automatic %18 is odd to me, but it also eliminates the need to weigh up what the service was really worth.
What I have a problem with though, is being accused of being ignorant or rude because I come from a country that doesn`t generally tip.

Well let me say that many state courts have already affirmed that restaurants cannot enforce a "manadatory gratuity" even if clearly stated on the menu - but it would cost more to fight the legal battle than paying the tip.

Beyond that, this is a douchey type of thing to do - a lot of restaurants will not split checks for large parties for this reason - let everyone split it manually and fight about it at the table amongst themselves; this at least allows the tip to be paid.

Just another reason people pretending to represent an imaginary god have a special place in hell.

I agree he should tip something but if I saw a bill with the tip filled in I`d be more likely to tip like poo. I normally just double the price and move the decimal (ie 20% tip) and reduce it for service from there, but to be expected to pay 18%? ... yeah, here`s your 5-10%.

@tedgp if you ever visit the U.S. please stick to fast food restaurants.

My personal tipping scale:
10% for horrible service
15% for less than perfect service
20%-30% for above average service

A couple of the restaurants I regularly visit give me a lunch card they stamp; buy 10 get the next one free. I leave the server $5 on the free one. Normally my lunch tip is about $3.

IF YOU EAT OUT IN THE U.S. YOU NEED TO TIP! IT`S A F*CKING RULE! END OF DISCUSSION.

"greed takes over and they think they can make a killing from tips. "

I can`t tell if you are being, sarcastic, flaming, or just a total f.ucking moron. However I will give you the benefit of the doubt and just say it is because you are European so you don`t understand the tipping set up in America.

That being said, if you ever come here and choose to never tip, may I recommend not eating in the same restaurant twice? I promise you would be consuming all matter of unpleasantness on the second trip.

Again, thats not the customers fault. The person who applied for the job of a server knew what they were getting themselves into. Unfortunately greed takes over and they think they can make a killing from tips.

@tedgp
go and look up US minimum wages, in a lot of places there is a different minimum wage for people who can get tips. In some States it is something derisory like $2 an hour compared to $7.25 (the national minimum wage, the lowest allowable, higher in some states but there for comparison).
So it is legal to pay them almost nothing (which is what I would call $2 an hour).
Is this right? I don`t know, but they have certainly taken into account the "It`s not fair that they get tips and I don`t" argument.
This is quite possibly different wherever you come from but you might have more insight into the American point of view after looking into it.

@fools really? Explain why you think that? The job is clearly advertised at a set wage. People go for that job knowing they are being shafted, but their greed thinks they can make a ton of cash through tips. Sorry bud. It doesnt work like that in the real world i.e every other country.

@tedgp If nobody tipped, there would be no servers. That, or the people that would be taking a job like that would be miserable. Waiting is a tough job and in order for the restaurant to make any money at all they pay their servers less and the people that come in give a little extra for the service. If you don`t like tipping, stay the drat home and cook your own food.

I used to deliver pizzas. Once, I delivered about 10 pizzas to a party at a church. It took awhile to find the people in the church and longer to take all the pizzas to where they were at. They were super nice to me as I was to them. But naturally they stiffed me on the tip. Shortly after that I got a license plate holder that said "if you don`t tip your pizza delivery driver, go to hell." Ironically I ended up donating that car to a church, remembering the license plate holder days later

So, when people tithe 10%, where does that go? To the church fund. And what does the church fund go to? To pay the pastor. And to buy poo for the pastor. And to do things the pastor wants to do. So a pastor saying that he tithes 10% to God is like saying that he masturbates in his own wallet. Well, you know, or something.

I usually go by the rule of thumb of 10% for good service, 15% for fantastic service. I don`t understand why the percentages have risen in the past few years. The rising cost of food should cover the percentage.
Say in 2000, I order food that comes to $20 and the service was good. I`d leave 10%, and they`d get $2.
In 2010, I`d order the same food and the total comes to $30, and the service was the same. They now get $3.
But this rise in percentage, but not a rise in service would make it $2 to $4.5.

The last restaurant I went to, I tipped 12%. The service was better than what I set the standard to but not so much that she deserved more.

Nettech98: The eighteen percent tip was added automatically because he was in a large group, so it was added automatically. Most restaurants, that I`m aware of, automatically add a gratuity for large groups, simply because it is a little bit of a strain on the restaurant to service them -- more orders, have to check-back more frequently, obvious stuff like that.
And it`s not like he`s giving the guy ten percent of everything he earns -- like he gives God. Plus, if he wasn`t a pastor and was likely tax exempt, he would have to give the government more than ten percent, so does he advise people not to pay taxes? He just sounds like an asshat.

"What motivation is there for a server to do a good job knowing that no matter how bad they screw up they`re getting 18%??? "

every restaurant I myself or friends of mine have worked at, if you complain to management about the grat because of the service, they will usually remove it.

plus the 18% isn`t always a good thing. i have had people tip me less than they normally would have due to auto grat. customers that usually tip 20-25% but when the auto grat comes out they dont bother to bump it up the extra 2-7% on top of the 18% and instead just sign on the dotted line.

GRATUITY : something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service; especially: TIP

It`s for service. Good service gets more, bad service gets less or none.

What motivation is there for a server to do a good job knowing that no matter how bad they screw up they`re getting 18%???

Also, although I know it`s the norm, why should the server get a percentage? It`s the same amount of service if I order a glass of water or a glass of champagne - a cheeseburger or a filet...

If I`m truly supplementing their measly hourly rate (way to go employer), then the half hour they spent with me for a $10 tip (assuming they waited only on me that hour) just took that rate from $2/hr to $12/hr.

That doesn`t even cover the scenario where tips are pooled or shared with other staff like busboys or hostesses.

And how many servers do we think actually voluntarily report their tips (regardless of whether they would actually incur any in

If I`ve said it once, I`ve said it a drating thousand times, when you go out to eat in the US at a place with waitstaff, you are entering into a social contract. Unless that waitperson does something to deserve a reduced or no tip, you are drating assmunching douchebag extraordinaire if you don`t tip. And you should be beaten with a rubber hose. That`s stealing. Plain and simple. It`s legal thievery, no different than if someone reached in your wallet and pulled out money. non-nice individuals!

“As a former waiter, I firmly believe you EARN your tips. It encourages good service, and shows respect to your customers."

As a former waiter myself I will have to call you out on your bull poo. You should know that with a large group (this case 20 people) that 100% of your time and effort goes to pretty much just that one table. And they hang around a long time usually. And when the split checks are paid at the end, if there is not grat, a lot of people will mistakenly underpay or not tip, assuming it was included when it wasn`t, or they are cheap, or thinks someone else will make up for their crappy tipping. Its there to protect the server since they dont have any other tables.

MacGuffin, don`t be weird. Also, if I had to pick another country`s healthcare, it would never be the NHS. Not in a million years. It is the worst universal healthcare system of the developed world. Even we have higher cancer survival rates without full coverage. Imagine that. Canada is better.

But I will point out that nothing is free. Seriously.

And tipping - what are you talking about, you`re being weird. If you`re deranged about another country`s culture when it comes to tipping, you have other, deep seated issues going on.

Waiters feel entitled to tips because that`s their job, that`s how they make money. If they provide a good service, they can make bank. If they deliver bad service, they struggle to meet minimum wage.

Many lefties are cool and interesting people, you`re one of the weird ones though. You`re basically the Rush Limbaugh of the left. Deranged, dazed and confused. You should be proud.

linkenberger- his point wasn`t about mandatory tipping, it was about tipping at all. Notice he didn`t replace the mandatory tip with any tip whatsoever.

Trutenrman- You do realize that waiters and waitresses in this country are paid sub-mininum wage due to the assumption of gratuities. They literally live off of tips. Other countries don`t do it that way so that argument is irrelevant. Just own your cheapness.

@TruTenrMan: auto grat is not crap. it is there to protect the server. when large groups (usually 8 or more) are splitting up a check and paying separately a lot of the tip is forgotten. not that people are trying to but dividing up a check some people forget to pay for an item and that just gets paid by the tip in the end. or they assume someone else is taking care of the tip but that person isn`t.

it is very important in a case like this were there was a group of 20 people that were all paying separately.

in your case that you think it is a reward, you clearly dont know how the service industry works and have never put yourself in their shoes. most states pay servers $2.13 an hour and that is only so they can tax their tips. the only money they make is on tips. you cant afford to tip? or just dont want to? then dont go to a restaurant, go to a fast food joint or cook at home. but every time you go out to eat you need to expect to pay a proper tip.

As a guy who tips 20% average (and there have been several times where I spite-tip two cents with a brief list of weaknesses I suggest improving), while I don`t agree with how this guy is going about it I agree with him. Mandatory gratuities are MORONIC. Why the hell should I have to give you 18% of the money I spent on your food regardless of if you were timely with the order, frequent with the refills and cordial with your service? I make a point of never returning to resturants who enforce mandatory tips, even if they had good food and service. As a former waiter, I firmly believe you EARN your tips. It encourages good service, and shows respect to your customers.
