@kja: It is not apple that claims it, it is worse: the apple adepts claim it. A lot of them act like they are in a sect or something like that and can`t even accept that there might be other products that are at a same level as their own toys or let alone be better.
And don`t try to discuss the chronological order in the evolution of tablets/tuchscreen phones etc because apple is the one and the only creator.

Apple claims damn near everything in hopes that people won`t contest that claim. Case in point, they were attempting to sue Amazon for trademark infringement over Amazon`s "Appstore for Android" because they combined the words "app" and "store" but the case was recently dismissed by the judge.

Although the roots of tablet computers go back as far as 1888, GRiD Systems Corporation and Samsung
should be at the top of that pic, not Microsoft.

"The GRiDPad was a touchscreen tablet manufactured for GRiD Systems Corporation by Samsung in 1989. It is regarded as the first tablet computer directed towards consumers. It was so successful it was used even by the United States Army. Jeff Hawkins went on to use the GRiDPad as a predecessor for his best known-invention, the Palm Pilot." - Wikipedia

Also notice that Apple didn`t invent the small `i` either.

Everyone knows Moses invented the tablet!

Seriously though, I find it so funny to read all the criticism about Apple from people who have likely never really used one of their products.

When it comes down to it, different devices serve different purposes. If you just want to watch videos and surf the net, then buy an Android or something. If your like me and you use your cellphone and tablet to create music, then buy Apple. Android just doesn`t have the PROFESSIONALLY made apps yet, by companies like Korg, Yamaha and Fender. Every music app I`ve ever tried on Android has been terrible!

jaysingrimm: I think most people prefer to use a computer (laptop) to create videos/music/games than a cumbersome tablet made by anyone at this moment in time. While i have no doubt it will be easier and better in the future, laptops just have more power, more capabilities, and is just all round in general easier to use. I`ve owned mac phones and books, but won`t again (too expensive for the quality of work (poor)). I used hackintosh for a while and i will admit that after i installed imovie on it, it got me started in making videos. But now i use adobe premiere on windows, inside a virtual box running on linux. With that being said, just because you haven`t seen anything you like on android doesn`t mean that nothing will come out for it. A lot of people use android now, and just as their sales have surpassed the iphone, you know their software will in due time. (more devs)

GuySmiley: I agree that laptops and desktops still serve a purpose. Most of the production work I do on a PC (Mac software is not always available for certain programs, and others are notoriously glitchy). I went with apple for my portable devices simply because of the desire to compose while away from the studio. I do mostly electronic music, so it didn`t seem like so much of a stretch for a phone/tablet to find a place in my setup in general. In fact there are several faithful recreations of actual gear used by producers. I actually prefer the iKaossilator app to the KO2, and while I prefer the ESX to the iElectribe, it`s certainly useful when synced alongside the aforementioned iKaossilator. If an MPC is more your thing, guess who just released a new app? Several synthesizer apps have proven to sound great alongside any other analog modelling synths, hardware or software. I can hook a MIDI keyboard up to my tablet to play, and access the editing parameters very easily on the tablet.

Whodat6484: Are you one of those analog purists? Do you still record on tape to preserve the analog sound, denying yourself the usefulness of software? I never understood this. Eventually it`s going to be "digitized" to be put on CD or even further compressed into an MP3 or something right? Personally, I don`t discriminate. I`ll gladly use software or apps alongside hardware. I`ll use analog synths along with modelling. I love the Zoom G2.1u just as much as the Electro Harmonix pedals. I can even plug my guitar into my tablet, thus cutting down the need for a huge pedal board. It all has a place. While I`ll admit it can sometimes be a little tricky to get the mix just right, analog and digital gear can certainly be used together. Don`t limit yourself, it only stunts creativity.

On another note, are games like GTA Vice City, Devil May Cry, and the Walking Dead available on Android? Maybe the "Pro" apps will come to Android...I just don`t want to wait.

you may indeed.... if you were an idiot who was choosing to ignore any of the commercial tablet pc`s already in existence before the newton came out.

It`s odd the amount of people convinced that Apple invented either the tablet pc concept, the smart phone, or the mp3 player... I do like my ipod classic, it does what it says on the tin and holds 160gb of music and family guy vids - but if I was buying again there are several players that do it better now for less money.

To be fair the only thing Apple excels at ( or at least did) is the operating systems. Take that away and theyr computers suck like the rest of them.
When they released the iPhone one of the major selling points was the almost perfect ui controls.
I own a Windows 8 tablet and an iPad. The Windows 8 one doesn`t register the touch sometimes unlike an iPad that always does.
That`s it...the only difference. All the other things like apps, performance, etc. are the same.

@jaysingrimm - I wouldn`t say I`m an "analog purist" but myself, and the guys I write & record with prefer it, only going digital when absolutely necessary. I use an old Marshall JCM800 head from the early 80`s I found at a garage sale years ago and refurbished it. For the music I play you can`t beat that, a solid-state amp won`t cut it. I can pick out the "processed sound" and tell if what I`m listening to was made with amp/effects modeling software. (Guitar Rig/Zoom G2/Gearbox) Yeah, it gets digitized for CD & mp3 but I like to keep it pure analog until then. I don`t use many effects so I have no problem lugging my pedalboard around to jam/rehearse/gig/etc. All I use is a Wah, Rotovibe, dirt pedal, EQ, and Analog Delay. So yeah, the only time I ever go digital is because I have to and there`s no other way around it.

Yes the whole world, except for Apple Fanboys knows different.

Let me Google that for you (Sorry Apple didn`t invent Google). According to Wikipedia (Nope Apple didn`t invent Wikipedia either), The Newton started development in 1987, and was finally relesed in 1993. The GRiDPad was released in 1989, meaning it was most likely in development prior to `87 (my guess).

Saying Apple invented Tablets is like saying Henry Ford invented automobiles.

Apple haven`t invented anything, ever. What they`ve done is make versions of existing things that are easier to use and marketed them as a fashion brand. The fashion branding is the foundation of their success because it enables repeat sales at hugely inflated prices.

Oh, wait. They invented `i`. Apparently.

@Angilion: no, the basis of their success is making devices that people enjoy using, thus recommending them to their friends who in turn buy more devices at the markup Apple`s statistics show "most people will pay". The ad campaigns only go as far as showing people what`s available, but it isn`t until they go and try them at a store, or that they are shown how much they would enjoy owning it that the customer makes the purchase. All of this is painfully obvious by the way Apple stores are laid out, where they are laid out, and the way the customers are treated. The fact that the machines are -undoubtedly- overpriced, is nothing but a byproduct of a society that is willing to pay extra for quality.

If making a device a fashion statement was the basis of success, then the LG Prada and the LG Chocolate series would`ve made LG the biggest cellphone maker ever.

and as for Apple not inventing anything, yeah I guess apple didn`t invent the "tablet", they invented the iPad, which is like saying Rudolf Diesel didn`t invent the internal combustion engine, he invented the Compresion-Ignition (Diesel) Engine. Rudolf didn`t invent pistons, he didn`t invent heat cycles, neither did he invent any of the particular pieces of the engine itself. But that doesn`t make his invention any less innovative and revolutionary.

Apple, much to the chagrin of anyone who hates their devices, made your smartphones what they are today, and introduced tablets as you know them today. And for that, they deserve credit.

Bought my mum a Samsung Galaxy tab so while I`m abroad so she could skype me. She has never owned a computer before. I was able to help her set it up over the phone (mainly walkng her through intial setup as she was a bit nervous at messing it up, get to the play store and search for skype) without owning one or being there to see what was on screen. Since then she has just played with it and uses it a lot now. Hate hearing people say Apple is so easy to use perfect for people who don`t use computers should try a different tablet they`re all easy. I find Macs annoying they`ve put things down to too few options was working on a group presentation, I worked half as fast on the Mac. But twice as fast as the Mac folk when on my windows laptop. @jendrian Nope I would say Prada made smartphones what they are today. And Samsung and google with android have introduced waaaayy more features which Apple now offer. Apple with their cult of followers empathise a market, that`s what Apple are best at. Apple products usually have a competitor which has better specs or functionality but just isn`t popular because it doesn`t have th shiny apple logo. I`m sure in ten years time you will say AppleMaps has made mobile maps what they are today on tablets and phones completely ignoring googlemaps.

@Bakcagain21: Surely you must be joking. The Prada had absolutely no impact in anyone`s life, much less make any inroads in the course of technology. Most people didn`t even know it existed until it was brought up that it kind of looked like an iPhone prior to 2007.

Android wasn`t even going to have a touch display until after apple released it, in fact, the kernel of Android OS will forever need to rely on software to make touch input lag corrections precisely because they saw the 2007 iPhone presentation and thought: "hey, that looks like a good idea", and changed their plans on what Android was.

And as for your mom`s story all I have to say is: had you gotten her an iOS device, she would`ve figured it all out herself.

My mom, for example, who had hated computers and the internet her whole life and didn`t even know how to turn a computer on, became so computer and internet savvy when I relinquished my iPod Touch last year that not only did she make the conscious decision (after reviewing all of her alternatives) to buy a Dell laptop with Windows 7 and an iPhone, but in a matter of weeks she made herself a huge worldwide network of friends that helped her build an NGO that provides legal and medical assistance to low-resources people.

And she will always tell you in every conversation that the iPod was the catalyst: it taught her everything she had been missing, without my input (or anyone else`s for that matter), from the current world of technology.

You will have to excuse my incredulity to your posts when every single poll rates Apple devices as the highest in costumer satisfaction.

oh and by the way, I keep my options open. The day a computer comes out in which I can work my efficiently, I`ll abandon my MacBook, and that will probably move me away from Apple, but that will never change the fact that your precious Android devices are as good as they are today because they were trying to compete with the iPhone. And those are the words of the Android development team, regardless of your feelings towards Apple.

Oh, wait. They invented `i`. Apparently.

Actually Apple stole that from the GRiDPad as well.

Although not an Apple fanboy due to the cost of the product and their rigid grip on things like the appstore etc. i think Apple has helped the tablet en touch devices enourmously by making them almost foolproof and thus easy to use.

Hating APPLE is so mainstream. I recall when Apple was failing and it was fashionable to hate the MicroSoft evil empire.

iPads work great and saying that is not trolling.

What does it matter if hating something is mainstream or not. If you hate it, you hate it.
And it is so mainstream to call something mainstream.

"Bought my mum a Samsung Galaxy tab so while I`m abroad so she could skype me. She has never owned a computer before. I was able to help her set it up over the phone (mainly walkng her through intial setup as she was a bit nervous at messing it up, get to the play store and search for skype) without owning one or being there to see what was on screen."

To be fair to Apple, I did something similar the other week where I was able to talk my girlfriend`s friend through setting some things up on her ipad even though not only could I not see what was on her screen, I don`t own an ipad myself and have never used one.... she just read out what she could see on the screen and i used tech experience of other machines to guide her through it. Apple did get the usability thing right on their products for sure.....well most of them, the later editions of itunes are a drating mess.

    I was joking, of course.

Personally, I thought they lifted it from Intel, who were using it at least as far back as 1982 with their i286 CPU.

If making a device a fashion statement was the basis of success, then the LG Prada and the LG Chocolate series would`ve made LG the biggest cellphone maker ever.

LG obviously failed to make those devices fashion accessories, so your counter-argument is invalid.

__ LG obviously failed to make those devices fashion accessories, so your counter-argument is invalid. __

@Angilion: Well the entire line was based on making them fashion accessories. They were [supposed to be"> designed as fashion accessories and they were advertised as fashion accessories. The fact that they failed at it doesn`t mean the argument is invalid. That`s like saying that since fusion reactors have not yet been built, it`s impossible to use them as an example of a nuclear plant.
