    Stupid.
Yeah, cats devestate the environment. They did it in Hawai`i too, but you can`t "ban" ferril cats. They won`t turn themselves in, they`ll go underground. Then you`ll have mafia crime wars between rival cat-gangs. All that bloodshed until one Top Cat emerges.

As fun as it would be to joke about it, he actually has a point!

New Zealand and Australia (amoung other places) had been devistated by "invasive species" like cats. Keeping them indoors is a very good idea!
However, IDK about New Zealand and mice, rats and other rodents. If those (invasive) are there too? cats might be the only thing keeping them in check.

It`s a fact: Cats prefer hunting mice & rodents. They`ll go after birds if: a) it`s easy b) there`s no mice around.

    OK: Joke time!
"They`ll get mah kitteh when they pry her from my cold dead hands!"

"It`s a fact: Cats prefer hunting mice & rodents. "

Not a fact at all. The real fact is that cats are cold blooded killers.
They enjoy killing. A domestic cat, that does not need to hunt for
food will still kill anything it can. And it does it in as slow
a manner as it can `cause cat`s are dicks and they like killing.

@Gerry1: not true! Cats learn how to hunt from their Mamas. It`s possible they`ll learn later in life too though.
Feral cats kill mice with a quick neck-snap. Boom! It`s over. They`ll "throttle" larger prey, which isn`t pretty but it`s what predators do.

What you describe is when a mother cat brings home as live mouse to teach her kittens. She`ll let it go, and if a kitten can catch it & kill it? good! Strangely, if the mouse gets away she won`t chase it anymore, it goes free.

Domestic cats view "their humans" as very weird kittens who have no idea how to hunt, so they`ll try to teach us by bringing home live prey.
Even male cats will do this.
However, it just may be that the cat knows how to HUNT but not how to KILL what it catches. I`ve seen that before!

So: not ALL cats are killers. 9/10 of my kittehs had NO idea! lolz! But yes, they`re REALLY good hunters.

Everyone loves a kitten, but there`s been pushes to get rid of them here in Australia too. we`ve had literally hundreds of native species decimated by feral and domestic cats. And the feral ones get ; BIG
Google gippsland big cat and you`ll see pictures of one shot years ago that was over 6 feet long.

    lol @ ElClinche.
And Gerry, you have a point that domestic cats do seem to kill for fun but I believe it`s only coz we feed them so they have no real need to kill because they`re hungry.

There`s a wetland near a city on Vancouver Island that was a local birdwatchers` paradise. In came a housing development next to it, and pet cats virtually destroyed the bird population. Between the damage they do and the danger they are in themselves from urban coyotes, I think we have to get the idea into people`s heads that cats must be indoor pets.

I have lived with lots of cats. They generally kill only to eat. The real problem is humans. Agriculture creates food for rodents. Where there are rodents, there are cats. Get rid of the humans, there will be fewer rodents and the cat population will be reduced. Also, cats are not designed to hunt birds, but they do get them now and then. They are wonderful creatures, far superior to humans as apex predators.

A lot of people say cats keep the rodent population under control, but if these are pet cats, are they still killing rodents, or birds, after being fed?

recent studies (done by pretty much fitting cats with gopro cameras) suggest that the average outdoor house cat kills *like 10 animals per week, far higher than previous estimates. Cats are nocturnal, unless your up all night to feed them, they get hungry, and they just enjoy killing things...

@shaustin, "unless your up all night to feed them, they get hungry"

Leave out a bowl of catfood then? I think you are blaming the wrong thing. Well fed cats make much better hunters.
