Just How Bad Is `The Big Bang Theory?`

Why don"t you watch a "funny" scene with the laugh track edited out and tell me.

I actually think it is less annoying without the fake audience laughter.

why do people always make such an effort to try to make others hate the same things they do?
that time is better spent promoting the things you do like.

I`m fairly sure it`s filmed live, btw. Might have some laughs added later but you can buy tickets to the show anytime.

This is one of the only shows I actually laugh aloud at. I don`t see it as geek humor. I see it as raunchy bro stuff. Like totally juvenile under the table 12 year old stuff. Come on what can you expect when S01E01 intro is of them donating sperm!?

Unaired pilot

I hate this show so much. It is not funny at all.

Of course it is going to seem awkward because the actors are waiting for the laughing to die down in between delivering their lines creating an awkward pause.

Very interesting @ Squidbush.
I DO believe you... but do you have any articles on the web to back that up? (just curious)

Ever watch Michael Myers without the scary music? Armageddon without that Aerosmith song??? Not so scary and not so sad. Laugh tracks = ambiance where music isn`t applicable.

Big Bang Theory is awesome. If you don`t like it, don`t watch it!

Many jokes aren`t funny when taken out of context and you say them to yourself with nobody around to share the joke. You feel safer laughing at things when others do rather than thinking it is funny but wondering if you might upset somebody by laughing at them - people get so touchy about that.

Removed the context to a lot of the humor by showing a scene from late in the episode. The removal of the laugh track only made it like an episode of the office, where it`s an uncomfortably bad situation that you are forced to sit through.

"what happens is that a studio audience generally laughs more than a single viewer at home in front of the TV/computer because laughing is a social thing. you laugh loud to signal others that you understood the thing and found it funny. So when you are alone, a scene may be just equally as funny, yet you don`t laugh, which makes you think that it MUST not be funny"

Which is why they started using laugh tracks in TV. That way you don`t have to deal with an audience gumming things up by making noise or laughing (or NOT laughing), just add a recorded audience laughing at the appropriate moments.
Laughing is similar to yawning, it`s contagious.

Its still a decent show that has its moments, the episode where they get high when they are supposed to be watching shooting stars was pretty good. They really need to tone down the laugh but theres no other sitcom like it on tv so its the best of its kind right now.

This scene wasn`t particularly funny to begin with, all this proves is that you took a mediocre scene and attempted to prove the entire show isn`t funny by removing the laugh track. You`re a moron.

Still, it proves a point. Not actually funny.

I don`t need a laugh track to know when to laugh.

This wasn`t a particularly funny scene to begin with. Though, if it had been edited to remove background noise, leaving the laugh track out most of the time would help. It`s used far too often.

it`s not funny *with* the laugh track. without it`s just a sad display of the bleak and withering state of today`s script writers.

"carmium - ever watch "the office?"

Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, It`s always sunny in Philly, 30 Rock, The Leagues, Workaholics, Reno 911, ANY "adult" cartoon (Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Archer). The list goes on and on. I honestly can`t think of a SINGLE television comedy that is filmed in front of a live audience (As this show is) that compares to any of the shows I listed. Including Cheers.

There are shows with laughtracks that worked. They worked because the canned laughter had no bearing on the comedic timing of the actors, and most of the time, the actors would just be talking over the laughs. Seinfeld. But "filmed before a live audience" just ruins any sense of personality in a show.

"A few comedies have tried to be funny without an audience or laughtrack - it just doesn`t work."

Scrubs didn`t use a laugh track. It worked quite well.

I watched a few minutes of one episode and found it to be not the least bit funny and actually pretty offensive. That might have something to do with the fact that I majored in physics.

I watch this show w/ my husband. Leonard often says or does things that are similar to crap my husband sez or does. That in itself gets us laughing much of the time. I`ve been noticing a HUGE internet backlash on BBT; what gives? It`s just a TV show.

Their timing is also off without the laughs. That alone would make suck some of the funny out.

1: That`s not the best or funniest scene. The picked a so-so scene. Stacking the deck.

2: It`s not a laugh track, it`s filmed in front nof a live audience.

I recall someone suggesting The Big Bang Theory to me when it first came out. I`m pretty sure that was around the time Community and Parks and Recreation started. Watched an episode or two of Big Bang, wanted to punch whoever that person was in their face.

Laugh tracks have always been a crutch. Not only do they cover up how poor the writing is, but they fill half the episode with wasted time.

come on, the part where he brought up her weight, that was funny, i laughed. still funnier then anything ive seen posted by fancy. wait fancy did post this, so in essence he did post something as funny as this... but it wasnt meant to be funny in thew way i found it to be funny... right? my head hurts. maybe i should stop drinking so early. the clock says seven but the lack of daylight says its ten.

Fancy`s just bitter and twisted and sick that he didn`t write this, or maybe he did ha HAAAA! Seeing as most of today`s IAB content is at least three years old, I can see why. It`s the "bitch at people better than you" day. Just shut up and get a manpax, troll.

Not as bad as i thought. I bet that if they removed the laughtrack for real, writers and cast would perform a lot better. This version is flawed in that sense, the actors are just waiting for the laughs to quiet down so they can continue: it destroys that precious comedic timing.

But i think this kind of sitcom still has some uses, they can`t all be parks&rec. Some comedy needs to be just brains off for half an hour. It still has enough genuine sarcasm to get our brainjuices flowing after that break.

I never really liked the show since it gives people permission to laugh at others for being different, the writers try way too hard to make phrases sound scientifically complex, and they insist on having the characters use the imperial system of measurement.

Umm, yeah, any short scene like this that`s taken out of context since, unless you saw the episode, you have no idea what exactly is going on, can be considered not funny. What`s your point?

i don`t understand how anyone can find any part of this show funny. it`s a sitcom. if you need laughter or an applaud sign to tell your audience something is funny, then it`s not.

This can be applied to most sit-coms, no?

That aside, I don`t even watch the show and didn`t think it was too bad. I had a few chuckles. :)

Not one of the funnier scenes on the show & it needs the set up to make it funny. Obviously the OP does not like the show & picked this scene for those reasons
