Expecting it to be anything other than "jif" makes you not just a dumbass but an incorrect dumbass.

The proper pronunciation, without any doubt, is "jif." All you brilliant thinkers shouting the old "The G stands for Graphic!" argument are simply wrong. You`re thinking of the name of the FORMAT, not the resulting IMAGE. Does anyone EVER refer to the digitized picture as a "Graphics Interchange Format?" Of course not! GIF (though derived from the acronym) is a word in it`s own right, the pronunciation of "graphic" is immaterial.

When the format was created, the name GIF was always read as "gee-eye-eff" (a bit cumbersome, no?). When you say "G-I-F" enough it kinda naturally gets shortened to "jif". The "G" in GIF does not mean "graphic" but is actually the letter "G" thus "jif" (as in Gee) is the proper pronunciation.

Oh Ollie, you never disappoint!

Has anyone EVER been able to tell you ANYTHING? You have to be one of the most close-minded people I`ve ever had the pleasure of loathing!
"pretentious f***tard"
Ironically, that phrase almost always comes to mind when reading your consistently derisive and offensive postings.

No, he can say how HE pronounces it, even if it makes him sound like a pretentious f***tard, but he can`t tell ME how to pronounce it.

"you never have a hard G in front of an "I"!"

giraffe, giant, ginger, gin...

Also the "j" sound is a soft G, the words you listed are all hard G words.

I`m no longer sure how to pronounce "Gin Gimlet"! I guess I`ll just have to go with vodka or rum drinks from now on.

Give, gift, girl, gill, giddy, gig, giggle, gimlet, gimmick - you never have a hard G in front of an "I"!
Because "gif" is so much like "gift" I think it unlikely you`ll get everyone saying it as "jif."

language rules dictate its a J sound
In words of Romance origin, `g` is mainly soft before `e`, `i`, and `y` and hard otherwise
They should have specified that the G was pronounced like the g in light, the i like the i in suit and the f like the f in halfpenny.

If another continent can put in its tuppenceworth, Jif used to be a brand of toilet cleaner this side of the pond, until they wanted to sell it somewhere j-less, and changed the name to Cif (pronounced siff, not chiff or kiff). Possibly there was also a chance of Jif peanut butter being sold here - though I`d hold out for Goober`s with the strawberry jelly, or jam, but save that for another day....
So here we would be told to pronounce it jiff, like the peanut butter we don`t get, or the toilet cleaner that is now called Cif. Yeah, gif as in gift, then.

I don`t give a flying frog fart whether some self-proclaimed internet expert proclaimed once upon a time that it was pronounced "jif" just cuz they felt like it ... g-i-f stands for "Graphics Interchange Format" ... "Graphics...", not "Jraphics". Therefore I will continue to say it correctly - "gif".

The End. :)

I just keep thinking of Aluminium and why it is pronounced Aluminum over in the US - I blame the Enterprise car adverts we have running at the moment.

The letter "g" comes close to following a phonics rule similar to the one for the letter "c" in that it is always pronounced /g/ unless it is followed by an "e," "i" or "y." So, while it`s true that the letter "g" makes the /j/ sound only when followed by "e," "i" or "y," you can’t be certain that it will be pronounced /j/. In some such cases "g" still makes the /g/ sound.

Seems lejit...

But the "G" stands for "Graphics" so it should be a hard "G" - sort of like people who don`t know how to pronounce their own name, I will continue to pronounce it correctly even if they don`t. My friend`s wife, an English major and a book editor, once called someone with the name "Cervantes" and addressed her as Mrs. Cervantes, to which the ignorant bitch replied "It`s pronounced `Sir Van Tease` " to which my friend`s wife continued to address her as Mrs. Cervantes, because really, there is no way I`m going to say it like that, even if you tell me to, because it is incorrect. If you name it the "Graphics Interchange Format" it is pronounced GIF like GIFT because the "G" stands for "Graphics". End of discussion.

Hey, you can call it whatever you want. But now you know you`re not calling it by its intended name. And I`m sure there`s products out there with names pronounced differently from the spelling that you still use anyway. Picky little hypocritical bastards aren`t you.

Screw `em, it`s GIF with a hard G sound for three reasons: 1) over 90% of English words that start with "gi" have a hard G sound, 2) the G in GIF stands for "graphic," which has a hard G sound, and 3) pronouncing GIF with a hard G sound is vastly more popular in common usage and has been for nearly a quarter century.

If you hear anyone pronounce it "JIF," you should laugh at them, insult them, and then beat them unmercifully until they swear never to do it again.
