Next time they walk in I`d tell them due to hard economic times I can`t waste my time with customers who don`t tip.

Or if I saw that while they were still there I would tell them that they need to account for tips when they dine out. Stay home if they can`t. I gave them great service and they can expect to never receive it again. They are not welcome back.

Surely it is massive rises in government spending that are screwed up. It`s a tip; its discretionary. Tax is not. If people decided to stop going out to eat the waiters would be out of a job, not out of a tip.

In many Asian countries such as Japan, tipping is not required. This weekend I was in a 6 star hotel in China and the room service delivery guy refused to accept a tip, saying "it`s my job, I am happy to do it for the pay I get" given that he`s paid a pittance compared to an American waitress, that`s an impressive response.

However, I absolutely would tip in the states. Given the culture, it`s an implicit social contract to tip. Mr Pink here doesn`t get it, or if he/she does, she`s abusing the wait staff to make a political point. Or maybe it`s a straw man ploy to get people to hate the GOP (even more.)

@randomxnp - While yes tipping is considered discretionary, in many parts of the US wait staff get paid a subminimum wage of $2.15 which is not enough to survive on in the US without tips. So to not tip a waiter or waitress who gave you exceptional service is considered extremely rude and heartless, because its basically taking money out of their pockets which they need to make a living.

When it comes to tipping follow the customs of the country you are in. Only takes a few minutes to find out what they are.

What does he expect the server to be thinking? `Oh, wow. I`d better vote Republican so people like this pay less tax, then he might throw me a few bucks.`

Uggghhh. How can people twist their thinking on an issue so drastically?

This isn`t "extra money you`re expected to give a server, which they don`t really deserve."

This is "here, since job performance as a server is entirely based on customer interaction, you get to decide how much this employee earned. Normally, we would just add their wages into the cost of your food, but this way our servers are held accountable to you."

How can you take your frustrations out on someone else like this, and smugly believe they deserve it?

For those b*tching about tips, servers in restaurants do count on tips to live. The wage they`re paid by the restaurant varies from state to state in the US, $2.13/hr being the minimum wage set by the Department of Labor. So yeah, if you don`t tip a waiter/waitress that did their job right and took good care of you, you`re an a$$hole.

    Probably not.

Mikeoxsbiggg-"if you don`t want to tip eat at home."

A tip is not required. It`s a bonus for good service. It`s discretionary. Increased taxes result in less discretionary spending.

Dragonace-" So to not tip a waiter or waitress who gave you exceptional service"

It`s very possible that he keeps those in his pocket for the times he gets crappy service. Making two points at once.

whether the card is real or not, whodat6484 is absolutely correct. If they do a bad job, sure, don`t tip or undertip, same as if someone not doing their job somewhere else shouldn`t get paid. But if they did a good job, that is their livelihood. MeGrendel - Mr. Pink much? maybe not all servers report honestly, but most do, and they pay taxes on those. If you can`t afford the tip, eat somewhere else. The reduction in hours the server works and the decrease in business is still sharing in spread of the misery.

MeGrendel - you are right that it isn`t my decision to make, but if you are so finacially hurting that you cannot afford to tip, why are you spending it eating out in the first place? I`m glad to hear you personally believe in tipping, but your prior argument sure did seem against it. As for it being a bonus for good service - that is not the case at all. A large tip is a bonus, a modest tip is expected, that is why the set minimum wage for servers is lower by far than for any other job - there is an expectation by the industry and the government that people will tip.

kayakdog-"why are you spending it eating out in the first place?"

The reality is some people want to eat out, but don`t want to tip. Tipping is not mandatory. (worst tippers are lawyers, followed by Baptists on Sundays)

kayakdog-"prior argument sure did seem against it"

There`s a difference between aruing facts and opinion. The fact is, tips are not required. My opinion is that it is the right thing to do.

kayakdog-"that (being a bonus) is not the case at all"

Until such time as tips are mandatory, it is the case. It doesn`t matter what is `expected`. It is strictly discretionary.

Which is why I learned real quick I didn`t want to work that type of job.

kayakdog-"there is an expectation by the industry"

I don`t care what the industry exptects, it`s discretionary.

    kayakdog-"and the government"

The government has recognized that people DO tip, not that they are expected to. That is why they allow the industry to figure it into their wage, and reduce the business`s contribution accordingly.

MeGrendle - you have made the point that you can get my name down, like,a lot. As for opinion versus fact, for all the quoting of me you did, I never said required. I did say expected, which is discretionary, but strongly relied on, not a bonus It is expected that you wash your hands when you. And the government may not have requirements that you tip, but the servers taxes are based on the expectation that their lower wage will be bolstered by tips to at minimum, the normal minimum wage, and are expected to pay taxes on wages of that level, and to report when their tips rise above that level. And for those that want to go out to eat but not tip or can`t afford to - there are plenty of places you can go where you don`t have table service that expects tips.
also, if you really need to go troll level breakdown - *expects* not exptects.

See, if that`s real, that`s non-nice individual behavior right there. When you go out to eat in the U.S., you`re entering into a social contract with that server in which, if they serve you, you`re going to tip them around 15% of the final bill or so. You decide you don`t have the money to tip, you make your lazy, pooass self a drating pizza, you poobag!

MeGrendel, it`s also discretionary for me to call the police if I see a thief breaking into your house or car. It`s discretionary if I try to help you if you have had an accident and are injured (e.g. losing blood). Some things in society, though, we do because, to not do them is to be a dirtbag.

@skullgrin: I`m not a big fan of tipping wither, and I worked in food servives a LOT over the years.
But when I go out? I plan on leaving a tip! If the service is poor? None. Excellent? Well, as much as I can afford, and an acknowledgement of the good service.

@SmagBoy: Oh I agree: this would be a real douche-bag thing to do (if it were real) no matter what "reason" may be behind it. (excuses I mean)

I used to deliver pizzas and I was always amazed at the people who didn`t tip. I just wasted time, gas, put miles on my car, and you pay nothing for the service I provided? I have your name, address, and phone number. I am ALONE WITH YOUR FOOD for as long as I need. What were you people thinking?

whether the card is real or not, whodat6484 is absolutely correct.

SmagBoy1-"you go out to eat in the U.S., you`re entering into a social contract"

The ONLY contract when you go out to eat in the US is that you will pay for the food and drink you consume. Nothing more.

skullgrin-"if you choose to eat out you are also choosing to tip."

No, you`re not. It`s not compulsory. It`s perfectly allowable to eat and pay the tab,and nothing more.

    kayakdog-" Mr. Pink much?"

Mind explaining what the hell that means?

kayakdog-"maybe not all servers report honestly, but most do, "

Actually I think you`ll find that the majority under-report. Those that are honest about it are in the minority.

kayakdog-"If you can`t afford the tip, eat somewhere else."

Maybe he likes the place and dislikes tipping. What part of `tipping is voluntary` is so difficult to understand.

    Tipping is not required.
    Tipping is not a `social contract`.
Tipping is not a prerequisite of dining at a location unless the menu or sign distinctly states that a tip will automatically be added to the ticket (I know of several places, and I usually tip over and above the required tip if the service warrants).

Well, what comes around goes around. I worked in the restaurant industry while in college and I can guarantee one thing: If you stiff a server or leave an insulting tip (5-10%) you can be guaranteed that you will be remembered and I hope you don`t plan on eating there again. Servers spread news about bad tippers like you`re a leper and believe me if you eat there again all the servers will know you and you will get pooty service because they know you`re not going to tip anyway - in fact they may ignore you and hope you walk out. Do it to a couple of servers and there is a good likelihood that someone will do something to your food or they will coerce the kitchen to do something to your food. I`m sure anyone who`s worked in the restaurant industry would back me up.

I used to work nights at an "Italian restaurant"(it was really just a fancy pizza shop lol).
I was paid properly and worked hard (it helps that the owner was a mate).
When a seated customer offered me a tip I would actually thank them for the the gesture and politely decline.
This was often met with surprise and I would have to explain that I was already being paid quite well to ensure they (the customer)had a good night.
If the owner will not pay his waiting staff properly, then why would you keep him in business by working for him?
O.K. I realise some people are desperate and easily taken advantage of, but why perpetuate the problem by expecting the generosity of the public to fill the gap.
any other industry would be faced with workers howling like crazed baboons if it treated them in this manner.

That`s not a business card size or format. You could easily print that on your home printer.

Taken into consideration cost of paper and ink, you could produce one of those for the astronomical price of $0.004, or about 250 of them for a dollar.

Funny, because Obama was generally referring to individuals making over $400,000 a year. Pretty sure you can afford to tip your server at least 15% to to supplement their cushy $7.50/hour wage. If this is real I hope this person`s children get cancer.

That`s who he TALKED about (and it was $250,000). But, what he DIDN`T talk about what that pretty much EVERY who pays taxes, will be paying HIGHER taxes.

    What a low life.
Way to take your anger out on someone who`s probably worse off than you, and has nothing to do with why you`re pissed in the first place, I hope they go back, and the server remembers them, so he can poison their food. My recommendation would be syrup of ipecac mixed with colon cleanse.

most servers here in TX get paid $2.13 an hour, and after taxes, their bi-weekly check is very little if anything at all. $0 paychecks are very common. when you dont tip, you`re forcing that person to work for free! not very nice at all!! >:(

xCANDACEx-"most servers here in TX get paid $2.13 an hour"

If you`re a server and making very little in tips, you`re a piss poor server.

Something tells me the server that got this was a piss poor server.

It took me about a week in the industry to decide that I did not want to be dependent on others tips for a living. So, I applied myself and got a better job.

If you`re 40 years old and your only job skills are waiting tables and/or working the fry station, that`s not the fault of society.
