Awww. This is sweet. However, let`s be honest. For most people that spend 80 hours a week playing video games, the video game IS their disability.

As HolyGod said, most gamers are not crippled with any disability- and we don`t hate ya`ll, it`s more condescension born from pity.

I rocked star wars galaxies. I was a Teras Kasi master, supreme tank, and big game hunter extraordinaire . I could solo a kryat dragon ancient and i made a killing selling the resultant flawless pearls. It took me a year to level my character to the point I could solo the most difficult animal in the game.

When Sony nerfed the game and changed the combat system, it ruined something for me. The game died. I know what this kid is saying.

    That `beard` though..

    This was my first thought.

I agree with a lot of the comments below, a lot of gamers have no life outside of the games. This kid has an excuse, they don`t. If you spend more than 20 hours a week gaming, you really should consider exploring the real world sometime.

Not the BEST argument, but it`s nice. The best argument is that people who`s actions are controlled by things like entertainment probably should not be walking the streets. Stop punishing the sane people and start helping the mentally unstable.
On a side note the only violence I ever witnessed caused by a video game was directed at a game controller. On the other hand I have witnessed plenty of violence caused by people watching sports. Why are we not trying to ban sports or at least make sure kids don`t watch them?

Halfpint: Really, more than 5 hours? So, you could say the same about if someone spends that long watching football or hockey in a week as well. 5 hours is virtually no time at all.

As for "exploring the real world," I`ve done that, there`s nothing out there. Got my wife, kids and job. My "me time" goes to gaming, as there is nothing else to do around here.

Gaming is a pastime exactly like any other. Weather you`re into movies, browsing the net, knitting, painting, hiking, etc. some are going to be fortunate enough to have plenty of downtime to spend on their chosen hobby/hobbies, and should not be judged for having a passion for something they love. If you pursue ANY of these interests to the point that you can`t function as a useful member of society, then yeah, that`s a problem. I HATE the type of people that say that gaming is childish and a waste of time, then proceed to sit on facebook for hours on end, or watch the crap that passes for commercial television nowdays.

@halfpint why should 20hours of online gaming AND communication be worse than 20 hours of television where you never talk to anyone? or a few hours/week in a cinema where you REALLY will not talk to anybody? or 10 hours of swimming where u still dont communicate, but at least exersise? tell me, do you go swimming instead of watching tv? not to mention facebook at all

I don`t really care if people play video games or not. What I really want to know is where do people get the 20 hours a week from? It seems impossible for an adult who works, exercises, sleeps and socializes to have that much spare time, therefore, the only way they could achieve this is by cutting one of these things out, which is unhealthy. My only conclusion is that the only people who game this much (apart from the obvious kind of exception in the actual post itself) are bums, slobs, insomniacs and social outcasts.

@paddy215: ill take insomniac like its meant to be derogatory. 8 hours of sleep/10 hours of work. that leaves 6 hours A DAY. almost anyone CAN manage 20 hours a week gaming. open your mind. I like what @solvent and @spermninja81 said.

I don`t have time for 20 hours of television a week! I do not have facebook.

I don`t have a problem with people living differently then me, we can`t all be alike and I`m not claiming to be better then anyone else, I just don`t know where they`d have the time for that much gaming if they were supporting themselves, a family, whatever.

Tell me, where does 20 hours of sitting on your butt fit in besides a job and sleeping? Do you keep house (clean, laundry, cook)? Do you socialize (family, friends)? Have any hobbies?

Even if you had 2 hours each day of "downtime", that`s still only 14 hours of TV, Facebook, video games. I cannot imagine where you get 20 hours a week free for this stuff.

@HalfPintRoo: some people are more efficient then. whats confusing about your point is you ask where one gets 20 free hours and then ask " Have any hobbies?".

paddy - for me, I had that sort of time in undergrad. You`re right - once work and family enter the picture, that time gets reduced. But if you`re unemployed, boy howdy you`ve got plenty o` time for gaming.

@HalfPintRoo - I was being generous by giving someone 20 hours. If you spend 3 hours a day, that`s 21 hours. That really is too much, but it would be a good start for some people. IF they could cut back to 20 hours they might realize what they`re missing and cut back even more.

Perhaps they know what they are missing...and that`s a choice of priorities that they`ve made.

I wouldn`t judge someone else`s hobbies the same way as I wouldn`t want them turning round to me and saying `no... i`ve decided that you can`t do that hobby any more because *I`ve* decided that it`s `too much`." As long as they`re not hurting anyone, like the Korean couple who neglected their child whilst playing online games, then how is it anyone else`s business how much spare time others have or what they choose to do with it?

anyone referring to this guy as a kid needs to go back to elementary reading comprehension class.

he was born in 1975, that would make him 37.

want to talk about someone how doesn`t have use of his body but doesn`t waste 80 hours a week playing video games? maybe you`ve heard of him, his name is stephen hawking

"want to talk about someone how doesn`t have use of his body but doesn`t waste 80 hours a week playing video games? maybe you`ve heard of him, his name is stephen hawking"

yeah... and I wouldn`t presume to tell him what he can and can`t do with his spare time either.

This isn`t really about what the disabled spend their time on is it....it`s about other people being arrogant enough to presume they know how other people should spend their time more than the people spending it do.

Some people woodwork or fix old cars, others play games, what`s the difference? I manage to find time for my gf, job, and socializing and I play more than 20hrs per week easy. Like @korahn said, it`s just a pastime like any other, and if you enjoy it you`ll find time for it. My question is what you people are doing that doesn`t allow for that much hobby time? Seriously, if you can`t even find 20hrs a week for something what has you so busy?

and furthermore, the correlation between video games and anti-social behavior is probably more accurately put when stated that anti-social people are probably drawn to video games to fulfill something in their lives in a different way than socially well-adjusted people are drawn to them.

Also feel the need to point out that gaming is very much a social activity. Multiplayer games are a blast, and I`d be hard pressed to find a single player game that wouldn`t get that much better with some 2 player co-op added to it.

Also, for those people that inevitably argue that social video gaming cuts out face time, you ask any gamer who`s participated in a LAN party how much fun it was.

@cheeseb: Video games, the internet, and socializing are all melded. There is also anti-social behavior on internet - anonymity. So, I cannot see any group being more drawn to video games than they are to the internet. "Both environments" cater to the same crowds.
