They never have...this doesn`t surprise me at all. Especially since their biggest defense is, "Guns don`t kill people, people kill people."

My only issue with this statement is that guns...well you see...their purpose of creation was to well...kill *shrug*

so? since when have inanimate blocks of wood, plastics and metal done anything without a human hand behind them?
maybe it`s time the world finally realizes it`s societies aren`t as heavenly as many may wish they imagine and accept the social issues and problems they overlook that eventually lead to tragedy instead of blame pushing. oh wai...would mean people would have to actually think. never mind.

also i fully agree with sevyn. labeling off anyone of the millions who have a legitimate hobby or sporting interest in one object or another as a murderer or dangerous is all too similar to labeling one group of people as inferior/dangerous/criminal/etc. due to skin tone, religious/political preferences, lifestyle habits, so on, based on a select few`s actions. narrow minded views such as that do not make the world a safer or better place.

Nukes, we should all have nukes. Not nations, individuals.

so say someone goes along into a school with a kitchen knife, slashes around, kills a bunch of people. shall we ban all kitchen knives?
happens in china quite frequently, school slashings and stabbings, because guns are less accessable.
or you could by chance be beat over the head with a random blunt object, or a stone, shall that be banned?
banning much of anything doesn`t fix an issue, addressing the underlying causes of "why" just might help to though.

and again, a nuclear weapon doesn`t detonate on its own. same way a gun will not fire on it`s own. someone behind it is pushing that button, so ask why they pushed it.
as to saying illegal can`t be gotten anywhere anymore, i figure all the potheads on IAB speak for legality meaning drat all when you really want to buy something.

Define "quite frequently." It happens, of course. But China`s population is almost 1.4 billion, versus the U.S. population of about 300 million. China and the U.S. have roughly the same number of homicides per year (around 13,000), even though China`s population dwarfs our own.

fact stays the same, it`s not the object at fault, it`s the person using it. what people need to look at is why they felt compelled to use it and how they can maybe put a stop to it before it happens. thing with the current shooting that this is all related to is there isn`t even a motive that`s been made public yet. no motive = pointless to push the blame.

" it`s not the object at fault, it`s the person using it"

Most people in favor of stricter guns laws wouldn`t disagree. I would argue that Americans need to make the decision rather than have gun laws forced upon them. It is clear that more guns do anything but reduce the gun crime in this country. If we want tighter restrictions on guns, we have to get over our obsession with them, and that`s a decision that Americans have to make themselves, because there are 300 million guns out there now.

You`re correct that gun laws won`t remove the motive. I also think that we need better mental health programs in this country, but there is no way that`s the only reason these things happen at such a high rate here. Look at this article I posted in one of the other threads:

i fully agree there, in my country you have a police and mental health background check before you can obtain the license, though the actual test to get the license is distressingly easy to pass. you really only need to parrot a few laws on safe storage and know what the parts are named on a generic rifle or pistol.
however before you can actually buy one you need to be a member of a sporting gun club for one year to prove a "need" for it, which i personally consider a bit excessive considering the next point.
that point being that we still do have gun crime and it`s usually with stolen or illegally purchased firearms, which the time limit and license does nothing about, which many of the pro ban people seem to forget. not to mention most club firearms here are cheaply made and not really any fun or even prone to breaking which they like to bill you for.

better mental healthcare and a bit more education on actual safe storage/ownership along with more consideration taken on who is able to purchase what would do a world of good, no argument there, but pointless banning never puts an end to anything, if it has any effect it`s as i mentioned with china, one tool traded for another, and the determined can get it off the black market anyways. guess what i´m saying is that seeing people raving "this is evil because that!" without a reasonable and logical backing to their opinion is getting old, or maybe i´m getting older. who knows.

    1. A gun-free zone
    2. Anywhere else?
If we can`t keep drugs from crossing the border, what makes you think we can stop guns from crossing the border? Outlaw guns, and the cartels will start smuggling guns instead of drugs.

Knives are less likely to kill multiple people at a time. You know that situation people keep mentioning from China that happened the same day as our shooting, where someone stabbed/slashed a bunch of kids at school, and people keep saying "see! it happens even without guns!"... We had over 2 dozen deaths as a result of the shooting here. They had no deaths as a result of the knife attack. It kind of proves our point.

"fact stays the same, it`s not the object at fault, it`s the person using it. "

But the fact stays the same that certain weapons make mass murders way easier. I`m sure you aren`t arguing that we should be able to have nuclear weapons just because "nuclear weapons don`t kill people, people kill people". I don`t think all guns should be completely outlawed. But there should be heavier restrictions on guns so they aren`t capable of shooting as quickly or as much before reloading.

Mexican drug cartels get their guns from the U.S., since Mexico has strict gun laws.

I used to try to argue my point on this topic, but after a while realized that I`m dealing with the level of intellect that also believes that: sexual preference is a choice; the world was created 6000 years ago; evolution is a lie; climate change is a socialist agenda; socialism is evil; angels exist and actively intervene in our daily lives; shared healthcare is evil; Obama isn`t American; etc. It`s a futile exercise to argue rational thought in the face of such clearly irrational dogma. So instead I console myself with the belief that Americans are generally intelligent, caring people, and that there is still great hope for the future - especially once the dinosaurs start dying off.

So, because a shooting by a maniac happened, a cite that sells hats, belt buckles, shirts, wallets, decals, pins and knives should shut down.

(You do realize that the one thing the NRAstore.com does NOT sell is firearms, right?)

    @hi2pi

"sexual preference is a choice;" Sometimes it is, most times it`s not. I didnt` choose to prefer woment, but I do prefer a woman who can suck a golf-ball through 40` of water hose.

"the world was created 6000 years ago; " My personal belief it that it`s 4,542, 640, 042 years, 2 months, 14 days, 6 hours and 42 minutes old (at the time of this posting)

"evolution is a lie; " Nope, evolution is readily provable.

    @hi2pi (cont`d)

"climate change is a socialist agenda; " Climate change is a cyclic, naturally occuring process. The idea that we can do anything significant about, or need `more taxes` to do so, it is an agenda.

"socialism is evil; " Socialism is not `evil`, only a living thing can be `evil`. Socialism is an economic system that has failed miserably every time it has been tried. There is not one instance where it proved to be a `good idea`.

"angels exist and actively intervene in our daily lives; " Some believe the do, so don`t. Both arguements have equal supporting evidence.

"shared healthcare is evil; " Again, not `evil`, many believe that it`s just a bad idea.

"Obama isn`t American;" Let`s see. Obama was born in Hawaii 2 years after became a state, so of course he is.

Of course, this could also be simply a case of your trying to discount someone you`re losing an argument aga

#1. Hi2pi, I agree 100%. What you describe in your post is the main reason I seldom hang out on this site like I used to. By participating in a site that is helping a handful of yahoos spread misinformation (Americans are safer because we are swimming in guns; Obama is a Communist and wants to create Death Panels to kill your grandma; anthropogenic climate change is a hoax; ), I feel complicit--unless, of course, I actively combat the misinformation. And what I`m finding is that I really don`t have the time or interest required to spend hours every weekend countering propaganda churned out by far-right think tanks that is being endlessly repeated on this website by a handful of regulars.

#2. Lillian and FoolsPrussia, your posts (and the posts of a few others) are what keep me coming back on occasion. Thanks.

Next time an airplane crashes, I am going to call my legislators and try to have them introduce a bill banning them. After all, the plane killed innocent people. Give me a break. Totally agree with ya squrilz, those guys can be hard to take. Everyone on IAB gets dragged into arguments occasionally, but usually it`s the same few people. The trick is to ignore them. It may seem impossible sometimes, but they feel better about themselves when they argue.
To be fair, you can`t just blame the right. There are plenty of far lefties here that do the EXACT same thing. Only difference is that they share YOUR opinion.
Maybe if IABs vocal left and right would stop, fancylad might post more interesting stuff.

LillianDulci-"One argument has no evidence, the other argument needs no evidence."

Umm.no. Neither is provable on this plane of existance. Both are `beliefs`.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Your `logic` supposes there are, in fact, only two options. In reality, there are four:
    1. True,
    2. False
    3. Unknown
    4. Unknowable

You can not just proclaim your argument `needs to evidence` just because YOU don`t believe the other argument.

If you choose to convince others of anything (even angels do not exist), you WILL require evidence, otherwise you are just argueing your `belief`.

Just because we cannot keep guns away from crazy people does not mean that we should make it very, very easy for them to get guns. We should make it as hard as possible so that only those extremely determined individuals would persevere to the end of that mission. It would not stop these massacres, but it would make them as rare as they are in countries where it is extremely difficult to get guns.

@talo in a way, this really is not our fight, I see lots of arguements this way and that way, but the sad thing is Gun Control laws work well in our country. We may never have to deal with the horror of seeing a loved one shot or be threatened with the wrong end of a firearm. The statistics pretty much do all the talking. It is just sad horrible events are the only thing that seems to motivate people to consider the difficult issue of Gun control. No Australian wants to see another Port Arthur again and it took changes to accomplish this.

Right, so the NRA which looks after the right of innocent people to own and coarry weapons legally should be quiet during a "controversy"? I assume you don`t think Obama, who supplied weapons to violent criminals he knew would use them for murderous purposes, weapons he knew they could not legally own was right to make a cloying, cliched statement.

What is the controversy anyway? No-one denies that this was a horrible crime by a violent and disturbed individual. Completely uncontroversial.

You complain about so-called misinformation, yet give no argument whatever that these are not true. Given that there are strong arguments and at least a degree of empirical evidence that each is true, the onus is on you to provide an argument.

Ooops, you don`t need evidence or arguments, because like Robert Fulghum says, "liberals" don`t care about anything learnt since the age of 5, so just believe the fairy tales you are told.

Your comment is childish, yet you call the reasoned beliefs of those with whom you disagree "idiotic". Clearly you have a problem with reality.

For 15-year olds to 24-year olds, firearm homicide rates in the United States were 42.7 times higher than in the other countries. For US males, firearm homicide rates were 22.0 times higher, and for US females, firearm homicide rates were 11.4 times higher...Among these 23 countries, 80% of all firearm deaths occurred in the United States, 86% of women killed by firearms were US women, and 87% of all children aged 0 to 14 killed by firearms were US children."

Forget gun control for a second. Here`s a challenge. Explain to me how to reduce these numbers without a reduction in gun availability.

pladius - that really isn`t the argument here, if you could perhaps take in the wider debate you might just realise how silly your statement was.

CrakrJak - rapes, robberies and a host of other crimes could just as easily be stopped with electric self defence weapons or even pepper spray. I don`t really think your argument for guns is justified by your argument. I do agree with your take on the media however I think you should have stated all media rather than singling out the liberals, quite frankly it`s all a load of bullsh*t.

Already carry a .40. Looking at the Ruger LC9. Its compact but with a hot round such as the Hornady, you get the punch of a .40 in a sub-compact weapon.

"Umm.no. Neither is provable on this plane of existance. Both are `beliefs`. "

One doesn`t need to be proven. It`s the default position due to no proof from the other side. You don`t go around arguing that it`s a belief that there`s no giant invisible mutant alien turtle wearing a sparkly tutu, and that there`s equal evidence for there being and not being such a thing that I just invented. Because the belief that there is has no evidence. The "belief" that there isn`t needs no evidence. It has nothing to do with my own personal feelings. The evidence isn`t "equal" when one side has none and the other side is the default position.

LillianDulci-"One doesn`t need to be proven."

That just means your position can not be proven. Thus, falls into the fourth catagory: `Unknowable`.

Just like it`s "unknowable" whether or not there`s an invisible pink monkey flying above my head right now? Nope sorry. I don`t see the point in labeling something like that as if it`s a legitimate position when there`s no proof of it.

As no one has advocated such, the rest of your statement can be ignored as bullsheet.

That being said, my highshool included a shooting range. It was for the ROTC, but it the students were allowed to bring their rifles in for target practice or sighting in. The ROTC teacher just asked that you use his ammo.
