Dunno about the US but the UK Building Regulations used to have a drawing of alternating stair treads like this for loft conversions where space was tight.

I have built stairs like this before. Very practical when you don`t have enough space for stairs with full sized treads. If you are short on length, you can do this or make shorter treads. The second choice is much more dangerous when descending the stairs because it only allows enough room for the heel of your foot. This takes a little training to be comfortable with it because you are traveling vertically faster than horizontally - compared to the normal stairs.

I wonder if it was designed with the slinky in mind.

Unless you have sharp corners to navigate, don`t see the point.

Wikipedia: Alternating tread stairs
"Building codes typically classify them as ladders and will only allow them where ladders are allowed, usually basement or attic utility or storage areas not frequently accessed."

I just LOVE the thought of stubbing my toes after every step.

So, can two people navigate this without having to jump a step? F that. Architecture fail.

Yeah- imagine these- but open, and narrower, in a dark hall. I came down a set and it REALLY hurt- they were practically vertical when you came down!

its designed like this because with normal treads the staircase would be too steep, staggering the steps maintains the normal climb angle.
my friends got one in his house takes some getting used too

Let us count the benefits of this..... ZERO. If the treads went all the way across, you can still go two steps at a time. Reduced value of home, pooty for carrying items up and down,,,, etc
