Oh that`s funny. The mods pulled down the wrong thread. This version (2nd) doesn`t even have any content.

from the article, "children who can`t function in normal classrooms can access their right to free public babysitting from 7:30-1:50 Monday through Friday until they turn 18."
That`s a "RIGHT" ? It`s "I have a problem so the government has to take care of it for me" syndrome. One of the major problems with western civilization.

Sometimes you forget that some people live in fear and hopelessness every day of their lives.

That is terrifying,, poor mom. What can you do. It`s your flesh & blood who is ill. Tortured lives.
Can`t deal with this alone, she needs help from proffesionals.
Hope the kid grows out of it.
Don`t mind sounding all new age, the first step is drastic changes to diet. There are proven studies that show relations between diet & menal illness in kids.

@Gerry: Parents have to work. If those services weren`t available for parents, there would be more families getting welfare checks because they can`t take on more work.

    Gerry,

Do you actually resent the fact that kids have access to educational institutions until they are 18? That it`s a `right`? That`s what bugs you about this story?

I guess as long as there are prisons, and the Union workhouses are in operation, and the treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour ...

Hello Gerry, that`s what you call a social net. When we as society won`t help in cases like the one described in the article, why would we be a society?

School is one thing, a "Right to babysitting" is another. Is that really all it has become? Based on what college edumicated people write on their resume`s I`d guess so.

@Gerry: You might feel different about it if you were a parent who had to work an extra job to pay for your family. My mom often worked three jobs, including at night. We never took advantage of these programs, but that doesn`t mean they shouldn`t be there.

I think she was commenting on the fact that they weren`t providing real education in the "special" classes. Instead of it being the right to an education, it was basically a free babysitting for her son, perhaps?

    `college edumicated people`

Really? You`re better than that. And no it bloody isn`t baby-sitting but at some point as a teacher in that situation you do accept that you are not there to impart Tudor history or the wonders of the semi-colon. You are attempting to socialise a young person who is getting older and bigger and stronger but not developing in other ways.

When she called it baby-sitting she mispoke (I hope). This is my field and I do not baby-sit. But that`s trivial and the question is; does she have a legitimate right to a place for her child at an educational institution or is she being all 47%? Hey, the kid sounds tricky, why should Gerry pay tax to help out?

I teach kids whose families lock their bedroom doors at night to feel safe, but I`m college edumicated so my job isn`t worth poo, right?

FoolsPrussia - Parents have to work. If there weren`t those services available, families would stay together and support one another. You know, like elderly watching children...they we used to do it "way back when" when the gov`ment didn`t solve all our problems.

"If there weren`t those services available, families would stay together and support one another."

It`s a bit of a stretch to say that families break up because there are services like this available.
