Link: England Is The Most Violent Country In Europe - Much more violent crime than the USA. 2,034 vs. 466 per 100k = Brits are a violent lot!

I think you`ll find that`s *Britain* you`re talking about there, 5cats, and not "England". And the rate is only so high because it includes Scotland. And Scotland is only so high because it includes Glasgow.

Please don`t judge the rest of the Europe or the UK by our standards. Having one city full of violent, drunken psychopaths doesn`t make everyone in the UK bad people. That`s like suggesting we`re all sheep shaggers just because of those Welsh perverts.

Yeah, it must mean that.....unless of course you`d read the article. Honestly, do you guys not get that the Daily Heil is the UK print equivalent of Fox News? Its stories are apocryphal at best, and even it makes clear that what is classified as a "violent crime" in the UK would not be elsewhere. Someone got arrested here recently for calling a mounted policeman`s horse "gay", FFS!

Just means we`re harder than you Cityncolour. And that without your little indiscriminately bullet spewing tinker toys we know how to have a bundle. And socialised medicine stitches us all up to be ready to have another go a week later. And the BBC tells us where to go for a good bundle. Britain - violent and proud and WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!

Meh. Better a black eye then a exit wound.

Willing to bet most of them are repeat offenses from the usual scum. Trouble is, people can get away with quite a lot before they get jailed. So one person could do about 10 minor violent crimes a year easy.

I say if you put it as number of people who commited violent crimes, might be more around 1000-1300... at a guess. So 4th place!

Macguffin has done a poor job explaining why this is wrong. It`s not because her poohole of a country (hopefully leaving) singlehandidly raises the record to extremes.

1 They tell you themselves. We record things like Affray as a violent crime other countries do not.
"(1) A person is guilty of affray if he uses or threatens unlawful violence towards another and his conduct is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety."

I find my wife cheating on me and threaten to chop the balls off the guy who`s doing it. Guy runs away believing it tells police. That is violent crime. Someones talking loudly at cinema on phone. I threaten to ram the phone up were the sun don`t shine if he continues. Guy get`s scared believs I`ll do it, that`s Affray a violent crime. Can be recorded without being prosecuted. We`re all sooo violent...

(cont) inflated figures. to create a crisis. Never let a good crisis go to waste.

3 We have actually had a drastic change to our policing and crime has dropped now. Since we had a new government and new reforms. This data is from 2009 just as government changed and the new policies were coming into affect.

4 Around that time there was a massive push to increase reporting of all crimes. Do other countries have less crime or do people just think there is no point to report it. Take the ghetto`s of Paris people won`t report crime there.

So yeah you just have to threaten someone to make it a violent crime here, they were compiled by a source that wanted it to be bad so did include thing`s other countries don`t, We have a high level of reporting and the figures are old. So it`s not because we have Glasgow and not because we`re crazy violent... Just for reference I live in crime high haringey haven`t had a problem in donkeys years.

"In the twelve months ending June 2012 there were 29,513 selected violent offences that involved a knife or sharp instrument. This was 7% of the total number of the selected violent offences, a similar proportion to previous years. The number of knife offences recorded was 9% lower than in the preceding year." Such a high rate...

(cont) As knife crime isn`t individually recorded. It`s in papers interests to report how bad crime is as it sells more papers. In politicians interests to not question the weird collection of data because it allows them to legislate more. Take drink driving, if a drunk pedestrian runs infront of a car that is included in drink driving offences.... Making the problem of drink driving seem a lot worse then it is.

@Crakrjak on your knife ban call. I`ve found a lot from Doctors calling for the banning of pointed kitchen knives. And then some opportunist politicians commenting it. Arguing that they would stop the severity of knife attacks, i.e goes from stabbing to slashing.

But that would add an undue burden on all knife manufactures selling in the uk. Would also likely fall foul of Free movement of goods and services in the European Union, and though from your Euro Zone comment I know you are well aware of the complex governance of big old europe. It would likely be challenged in the courts. And though you can restrict the movement of goods (by imposing selling restrictions) for public health grounds they have to be legitimate and unfortunately the data would not hold up in court why there was a crisis that required this to be implemented.

as a sensible point, this is all recorded violent crime, and gives no idea just what constitutes violence. I was recently caught up in an attack on a friend- some guy went nuts and attacked her for no reason. She got punched in the face- and he did some serious damage. BUT- during the fracas her boyfriend tried to intervene and got thrown to the ground, I tried to intervene and got shoved out of the way- He is being done for 5 counts of assault- simply because it ups his sentence and gives them a bigger chance at getting him locked up. BUT this means that the figures will record this a 5 incidents- when in actuality it was only one.....

It`s a piece of piss, actually, to control the sale of knives, and manufacturers are already doing it. I recently had to purchase one of those packs of plastic picnic cutlery, including some incredibly blunt knives that could just about dent butter, and found myself being age-checked at the self service till. And in the past couple of years I did some work on an identity verification system that`s used to check people`s ages when buying stuff over the internet. Mainly it`s used by gambling companies, but customers also included kitchen suppliers, since knives are age-controlled products here.

Backagain: Your report was dated 2007, The Independent report is dated this year. But even a knife ban wouldn`t lead to the utopia that the UK seems to be seeking.

In short it`s just plain idiocy to institute weapons bans, all they do is disarm the law abiding public, which makes them defenseless targets for criminals and tyrannical government.

I`m saying that would be your excuse if you lived here, but you live in a very violent part of Europe, so you try and justify it by blaming others and saying if they weren`t there your crime would be nonexistant. Excuses only please those who make them.

@MacGuffin , point is you`ve said something in anger and they fleed, no continuance of threats. That is not a violent crime.

Yeah they would be regarded as a Keck selling arrangement (asking for age verification) they`re different. It`s an easy health and safety ground argument to restrict selling at the counter of knives to young people. But it`s different to require a different products to be created all together which was being suggested. That would be a Cassis case restriction. They`re similiar laws but it would be a different outcome. A ban on pointed knives, which requires changing how knives are made so they don`t have a tip but a curve or square edge will involve a lot more cost then requiring shops to check ID`s before stuff is sold. The public safety grounds evidence needs to be stronger as the burden is stronger. Having read as many of these cases of selling arrangements, product harmonisation standards etc it would be struck down.

That link didn`t work on my original message . But that`s the report I was quoting. It`s produced by parliament (not the government) is non partisan and non sensationlised. Dated from November 2012. That is more upto date. That is saying knives make up just 9% of violent crime.

The second report I linked to the one you are referring to was a report which looked how statistics were are made and sensationlised by the press.

The above link is saying you`re wrong about the problem from the most upto date and least partisan source. The second link is why you shouldn`t trust the newspaper on it`s claims.

Agreed. Not being able to obtain a legal gun will not stop a freaking criminal. The market is flooded with US and post-soviet guns and they keep coming.

    Also,

"I disagree with the subheading, given that a fair proportion of crime is carried out by immigrants."

Agreed as well. And this applies to most of Europe. Crime rates are driven up by minorities, especially of African and Mid-Eastern descent. See Turks in Germany, blacks in all of Scandinavia, gypsies in middle Europe (Czech and Slovak Republic, Hungary etc) Albanians all over the place especially the stolen Kosovo and so on and on.

NOT a "crime" in the UK. How about "rape"? Twice as common in "UK" as in USA... that`s a no-brainer: rape = violent crime.

    @5cats
    1) Slapping a stranger in the face would be classed as battery and thus violent crime here. Its already been explained why these figures aren`t directly comparable - but you go on using them as a comfort blanket.
    2) Rape in USA per 100,000 was 27 vs UK 29 - not much of a difference considered against the difficulty in reporting these crimes accurately.
    3) even if these figures were right, in the UK you are more likely to get in a bit of fisticuffs and in the USA you are more likely to get shot dead... Erm.. that`s fine by me, never been averse to a bit of pain, not so keen on being dead.

Bakcagain: You`re missing the point. Criminals will find and or create whatever weapons they want.

You should take a look at the multitude and variety of weapons found in prisons sometime. if you can`t keep weapons away from convicts behind bars, you`ll never keep them out of their hands while they are out on the street.

Disarming the public just makes them fish in a barrel.
