Overwhelming majority of UN member states vote recognise state of Palestine.

Plus, there was already a community with its own traditions, costumes and dialect specific to the east of Jordan before the establishment of Israel.

Furthermore, the whole principle of evicting a population, erasing their villages, and bringing in settlers so as to change an area`s demographics is simply immoral and illegal under international law.

It is true that Jordan is home to almost 2 million Palestinian refugees, but almost 400,000 live in refugee camps.

The argument that the majority of Jordanians are of Palestinian origin and that Jordan is therefore already the de facto homeland of the Palestinians is hypocritical and erroneous.

There are no precise statistics but it is true that at least half of Jordan`s population of about 6.2 million people are of Palestinian origin. But that is a result of Israeli expansionism and a deliberate policy of emptying Palestinian lands of Palestinians.

If Jordan was the original home of the Palestinian people, Israel would not have had to demolish around 450 Palestinian villages or to devise policies to expel the Palestinian population.

Good reply @davymid, even though you`re done here I`ll respond. I`d say "riposte" but few would understand that word...

#1 We`re not saying "The UK" are being hypocrites, we`re saying "pro-PLO" people should apply the SAME RULES to North Ireland... or any "disputed territory" on Earth! Equality under Law, correct?

#2 Imagine the UN forbids any "new housing" in NI starting in... 1970 (for example). "Only until `The Troubles` are resolved" of course...

ALL new homes built by Protestants must have UN approval. Certain areas, not others, certian numbers, never more! Of course Catholics can build all they want!

What would the situation be like today?

It`s ultimate hypocricy to say ONE side cannot build, but on the same "disputed land" the other side can!

Sheesh. This thread is old. I never once said that the conflict in Northern Ireland has nothing in common with the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Neither have I ever posted an opinion supporting one side or the other on that matter.

What I said was, to suggest that the hypocritical UK should "give back Northern Ireland" is ridiculous. Again I ask, give it back to whom?

For the analogy to work, several things would have to happen.

1. The UK would have to be unilaterally in support of Palestine, and against Israel. It`s not.

2. The UK is not building homes in Kilkenny, Cork, and Dublin exclusively for Protestant Brits. Look, the population of Northern Ireland (part of the UK) wants, overwhelmingly, to be part of the UK. The population of Palestine, on the other hand, emphatically does not want to be part of Israel.

See the difference?

Anyways, I`m going to leave it here. Laters.

It may have "eluded you" @scapegoat7, but Palestinians are already the MAJORITY there! I just said to change the name, and replace the Monarchy with democracy, see? Easy.

I did NOT say "support each other" dumbass: I said Arab (Muslim) Nations support HAMAS and NOT Fatah.

@Angilion: Thanks for the effort, I didn`t realize it went that far back.

@richanddead: Excellent points! The UN has a poor history of understanding history...

@davymid: On the surface, it sounds like MacGovern is right. Even worse: Jews have a legitimate claim to the area dating back 3,000+ years. Muslims didn`t even exist back then!

So the Orange Protestants and the Green Catholics, fighting over the same land since 1690, has nothing in common with Israel?

@davymid

There was fighting before 1921 you should know that.
The "fighting" in Northern Ireland was terrorist groups such as the IRA, UVF, UDA etc. That doesn`t represent the will of the majority.
Which has been between Protestant and Catholics now how is this not like Israel and Palestine again?
I suggest you stop using it as any kind of example of the UK`s hypocrisy. You know, since they won`t "give it back" and all.
Now aren`t you saying Israel should give it`s land back but the UK will keep what it did exactly the same for, infact they actually did much worse things. Sounds to me like the definition of hypocrisy.

Decent synopsis, Angilion.
Yes nothing like it at all LOL! The whole over 100 years of fighting yep they want to be part of the uk sure. The UK is blind this is absolute proof.
I said the majority of people in Northern Ireland want to be part of the UK, which hasn`t changed since Northern Ireland was created in 1921 (91 years ago, not sure about you "over 100 years"). The "fighting" in Northern Ireland was terrorist groups such as the IRA, UVF, UDA etc. That doesn`t represent the will of the majority.

Sorry McGovern, your knowledge of Northern Ireland appears to be lacking, and as Angilion points out, it`s extremely complex. I suggest you stop using it as any kind of example of the UK`s hypocrisy. You know, since they won`t "give it back" and all.

So Palestine is recognized as a state, 32 United Nations member states do not recognize the State of Israel. But Tibet never existed, it was always China since 1368, then reappeared 1949 to get the UN to accept Nepal, then poof gone again. Taiwan is the same, China is just gearing up its military for a really cool parade in Taiwan, since it`s just "One Country, Two Systems." If it weren`t for the UN I might have been confused.

If davymid can answer your question fully in 500,000 characters, I`d be impressed. In 1000 characters, it`s impossible.

If I could go back in time to kill one person, I think it would be Cromwell. He`s certainly on a very short list. Many, many people would have been better off if he died young.
Isn`t that what ALL the fighting was (still is?) about in North Ireland? That some wanted to merge with the rest of Ireland and others didn`t?
It`s far more complicated than that and far uglier. People in the USA have almost always been fed a hugely simplified and biased view. It`s not even possible to get to the roots of the conflict - they are literally prehistoric. The earliest historical records we have are conflict - Irish raiders and slavers attacking Britain and the Roman empire meddling with Irish civil wars.

You`re referring to William of Orange, who usurped the throne of England in a coup which resulted in an English civil war being fought in Ireland with many Irish people on one of the sides...the side that lost. William persecuted the Irish for that, but the underlying reason for it all (coup, war and persecution) was religion. Same with Cromwell, the foul bastard.

More than half of the UN member states are two-bit socialist dictatorships, so a vote of the UN General Assembly to support a gang of filthy, depraved barbarian terrorists over a civilized western democracy should come as no surprise.

@scapegoat7: ALL the Arabic & Muslim nations support Hamas, period. Finances, military, political support, ALL of that!
Abbas is a side-show freak, a "President" without winning the election? wtf?
He`s the header of a political party, NOT the elected leader of the Palestinian peoples.

If he was a leader he should move them all to Jordan, where they form the majority, and get rid of the "Minority King" AND his Palestinian wife too...

Re-name "Jordan" which is short for "Trans-Jordan" and presto! Palestinian Homeland that isn`t Gaza!

Easy-peasy! My work here is done. :-)

5cats- You recognize America as a nation, with all the rights that entails BUT you don`t have to support Obama.

When I meant no one supports Hamas I was talking about the UN countries supporting all of Hamas` crazy views. Many nations continued to work and talk with us during the Iraq war, even though they didn`t support the war.

@scapegoat7: SO! The properly elected Ruling Party is no good? How "liberal" of you!

So "no one supports them" but they won the majority in the election...
And absolutely rule Gaza, the de-facto Palestine, while Abbas hides in Israel-governed West Bank...

Really? O`really?

@davymid: So let`s have an election in Israel? Oh wait, they do that! Majority Rules only when it suits your slant, eh?

Isn`t that what ALL the fighting was (still is?) about in North Ireland? That some wanted to merge with the rest of Ireland and others didn`t?
Orange vs Green?

I wish you`d stop wheeling out this stupid analogy. I`m FROM Northern Ireland, it`s nothing like Israel/Palestine. Give it back to whom? It was never taken from anyone. The people of Northern Ireland WANTED to be part of the UK rather than joined with the Republic of Ireland. And a 2009 poll shows this is still the case - 69% of people in Northern Ireland want to be part of the UK and 21% want to be part of a united Ireland.

Nobody supports the crazy political parties like Hamas, just the right for Palestine to be a recognized state. With all the same rights as Israel. Most of the world agrees with this, not just people on the left, even many jews agree this is the path to peace.

Many of the war-hawks hate this. A lot of the war-hawks are on the right though, unless your libertarian. Maybe thats why you think the left is against Israel. While both parties cater to the lobbies, the right is way more sold-out to the companies that profit from war. You will never hear people on the right (unless your libertarian) try to cut our military budget.

Israel`s done with "open discussions" as they well should be! For decades the PLO has flogged the same horse, never willing to compromise one inch!
So after the last Accord was rejected by the PLO, again, the IDF built the security fence.
Israel on one side, "palestine" on the other.

Gaza IS the Palestinian State, ruled by Hamas, look how well that`s going!

Now Israel can negotiate from strength, something Arabs (and leftists) will have to get used to...

Why exactly DO leftists support the PLO?
NO gays, NO women`s rights, NO abortion, NO seperation of church and state (Islam IS the State!) NO equality... the same list of things the left hates about every other group, EXCEPT the PLO.

Those other countries never cared until they took that land by force.
Even so, I`m pretty sure that treating the Palestinians as equals, and not taking even more land, would go a longs way toward peace for Israel.

Two things:

1) You can`t moderate an argument between two people if you refuse to acknowledge the rights of one person. That`s why it`s absurd for the U.S. to oppose statehood recognition as a term of the peace plan. Give them their dignity, and they`ll be more willing to work.

2) Israel itself doesn`t seem to have much interest in the peace plan, because they are now expanding their settlements in the occupied territories.

You have a country and you still create tons of wars, killing people in other countries for money and oil. And yet the Palestinians are the bad guy. By your logic they should just give up their land, move out and die in a corner so Jewish people are not bothered and can peacefully take over the territory.
Do you know why Europeans have a different opinion? Because propaganda in the USA is really doing it`s magic.

There are some f**king stupid people here. When Hamas says they don`t care about a two state solution..their only goal is to drive all Jews into the sea. For decades they blew up buses full of children and civilians. I am not saying Israel is 100% innocent, but to say they have no right to defend themselves is ignorant. SnoopyBG you are ignorant. They don`t attack bases...they attack stores and cafes. The reason that Auburn knows this is because he reads. PLO and Hamas have stated over and over again they want to kill all the Jews.

#1 Was Hamas part of the "observer state" too?
#2 Abbas chose to flog the "1967 Borders" dead horse, AGAIN! The PLO had 90%+ of that and chose to REJECT it. Seriously, the Olso accord was the breaking point, after that "negotiations" have been utterly futile.

Israel gave ALL they could, it wasn`t enough, attacks and terrorism have NOT stopped, ever. So why should they talk with terrorists? Why obey the UN when their enemy ignores even the most basic human rights?

"It`s interesting that most of the countries that voted yes are Authoritarian. Awesome club the UN has become. Churchill was right all the way back in the 50`s."

It`s more interesting to see who voted no:

Israel (well duh, obviously)
USA (Israel`s b-- /`friends`/)
Canada (America`s `friends`)
The Czech Republic (famously xenophobic)
And a block vote from the south pacific `nations`.

Even my beloved nation, Britain, whose politicians have since the last war consistently and slavishly followed America into every act of poor diplomacy and ludicrous war, chose to abstain.

Even Germany, a country whose special relationship with Israel has historically made them especially reluctant to do anything that would be seen as opposing Israel chose to abstain.

In this vote, an abstention is a tacit approval.
