Y U So Racist, Victoria`s Secret?!?! [Pic]

Submitted by: fancylad 4 years ago

In its most recent lingerie show, Victoria"s Secret had the nerve--THE NERVE--of using an American Indian headdress.

I fail to see why this is racist. It is a traditional costume. If she had been dressed as geisha or in a toga would that also have been racist?

What a line of junk. Let`s say I have an apple, and John Smith takes that apple from me. In addition, because John Smith has an army that would easily obliterate me, I have no hope of ever recovering that apple. Who`s apple is it?

The apple is now John`s.

Perhaps you are right. I myself debated it to begin with but rationalized it by thinking that it is his responsibility to safeguard such information.

Either way, since I trust your opinion on non-economic matters, I have removed it.

Keep telling yourself that. The ultra PC crowd should try reading the story of the boy who cried wolf some day.

@dm: I know what healing circles are. For certain things, like substance abuse, I agree. However, (and I`m not sure of the specifics on this) there have been many cases of a First Nation person committing a crime and only being sentenced to a healing circle. That`s BS.

So although Americans may not remember them, we certainly do. Whether that`s because you killed most in your land or forced them to come up here I don`t know.

@Camael: People in Canada are constantly reminded of First Nation`s people. I live in a province with a very high number of them, shame is, not only are they poor and have problems with substance abuse like black people in the US, they also ACT like black people in the US (not all do, but ones in the cities seem to). When I was a teen I went to a Snoop concert and after a whole bunch kept calling him "my n*gger" Snoop actually reminded them that they weren`t black.

That being said, our government makes a big deal out of honouring and respecting them and their culture, so much so that cultural traditions such as "healing circles" are used to treat people with substance abuse problems, or even as a form of "punishment" for some actual crimes. This I do not agree with though, because I think healing circles are BS.

ByOwlPost: I`m guessing here, but I`d bet there are over a million `full blooded` Native American Indians in the USA, possibly more. Partial Indians are even greater in number.

Now `full blooded` could mean a mix of different tribes. The 2010 US Census claims 2.9 million, self-identified, `sole` Native Indians, how many are actually 100% would just be a guess.

A Native American headdress with LEOPARD spots? Come on! If you`re going to misappropriate a culture, go all the way, people! Make it jaguar print - they live in North America. Show me some splotchy rosettes. Those are too filled in.

Maybe they, like Columbus, got Native Americans confused with Indians. Because there are, in fact, leopards in India...

@Jamie76 - I didn`t know there were any "full blooded" Native Indians around any more. Not trying to be offensive here, I just thought most had mixed it up a bit by now. That`s cool.

course, she could use some sensitivity training and I would be happy to provide it to her.

No one cares to explore a truly `new world` that was never truly explored at all in the first place. If people knew what really happened they would probably reexamine what it means to be American.

Andrew155- What you said highlights the problem here- the only thing people `remember` about the Indians are from their school mascots or place names- maybe isn`t the fault of them, but the fault of everyone else who couldn`t care less. You can`t remember a group of people who, nevermind this being their continent originally, also live side by side with you in said continent- unless you see a pooty racist mascot or a girl dressed in lingerie and a headdress? That`s like saying black people only have cultural visibility because of minstrel shows. Learn a little bit about the people who`s country you live in. It`s actually pretty interesting stuff.

"Wait.. Is the headdress portrayed as a deeply spiritual/religious item to Native Americans? Only asking since I really do not know."

Does it even matter?? If someone used African regalia no one would care--not all Native Americans are raindancers. In fact, most are your neighbors--and disproportionately your armed service men.

It looks nice. They actually used turquoise in the dress which is traditional.

It`s acceptable to be racist as long as you`re also being sexist. If you`re looking to Vic`s Secret for social responsibility, you`re sadly misguided.

@Slotherder I meant it as sarcasm .. point I was trying to make was that perhaps native americans are their target demographic ... This is totally grasping at straws for the racism card IMO.

We should all start pretending that there were no native Americans when Columbus landed. Let`s remove all references to them from our history. I wonder if that would make them happy.

"Make who happy?"

Right.

People`s sensibilities get offended so easily. Wearing a sombrero, a samurai helmet, an ushanka (russian hat), or - forbid - a sexy nun`s outfit, is not the worst thing in the world.

Besides, if the Native Americans want people to stop using their images and culture, or their tribe names as school mascots (My high school was the Mascoutah Indians), then I`m fine with that. The only problem is that everyone will forget about the Indians. Nobody will know who the Mascoutans were, or the Illini.

Not any worse than the angel campaign they had for a long time IMO. I do understand the Native American (feeling some of a personal connection) nation wanting to stop the outside commercialization of the culture, especially when it`s fairly vulgar. But really, who takes VS seriously? I heard that VS said, while apologizing, that they viewed it as art. The leopard print fills out the costume very accurately as well, adding supremely to the artistic value. lawl

This is a tough call. I`m in the same boat as "KungFuGuy". If the headdress is a deeply spiritual/religious item, then yes, it is very offensive as it cheapens it. If not, then it`s not offensive at all. I think it really depends on who it was that was offended by this.

I`ll tell you what I find offensive, that creepy, anorexic chick on stage pretending she`s sexy. Why some guys like their woman to look like they are moments away from starving to death, is beyond me. It`s all about the curves baby.

It`s not up to you to decide whether a particular group of people other than your own is allowed to be insulted by something, especially when it is used as crassly as to sell a product. They are welcome to be offended.
