Link: Whale Meets Man, Man Meets Whale - Anyone know anything about whales? Wouldn`t a whale just suck this man up like a fish without a care in the world?

Most whales do not eat great fish-
    Wikipedia:
"Whales are generally classed as predators, but their food ranges from microscopic plankton to very large animals.
Toothed whales eat fish and squid, which they hunt by the use of echolocation. Killer whales sometimes eat other marine mammals, including whales.
Baleen whales, such as humpbacks and blues, mainly eat krill when feeding in the higher latitudes (such as the Southern Ocean). They imbibe enormous amounts of seawater, which they expel through their baleen plates; the krill is retained on the plates and then swallowed. Whales do not drink seawater but indirectly extract water from their food by metabolizing fat."

This whale would prefer plankton and swallowing other things non-detrimental to it`s digestive tract. Unless the bible.

Fancy, whales are not Bond villain. They are plankton eating, peaceful & curios mammals. He is just hanging, checking out a noisy & ungainly creature.

Am envious of the diver, lucky sob.

I think I learned on Qi that blue whales can only fit things the size of grapefruit down their digestive tract. A humpback whale is smaller so pretty sure it couldn`t even almost swallow a human.

This is a humpback. They travel from pole to pole, and are very social (read bored) animals. On a whale-watching boat, the more noise we made, the closer the whales came. This one is in shallow water, probably rubbing against the sand to scrape crab-sized parasites off its body.

Whale are very aware of their surrounding & surprisingly agile.

They are not some sea idiot shredders with their mouth open, swallowing randomthings. Intelligent beings.
There are stories of whales grabbing divers leg and diving deeper but they let go when the diver struggles. Think they are just playing.

The biggest animal ever to have known to have existed in the history of the planet...
@davymid: Biggest Mammal by far, but some of the `fish` in the dinosaur era mke the BW look like a guppy...

Sorry, I cannot recall the name of the MONSTER dinosaur fish..
    Picture this:
    Blue whale = Volkswagen Beetle...
    This Fish = Aircraft Carrier...

    Yeah, it was THAT big...

    Hummm...
"Megalodon" is the critter I recall, but he`s not much bigger tha "Ol Blue"
There`s GIANT version of Megalodon which is 10X that size...

    And then there`s THESE critters...
(Hint: They do NOT fit in your aquarium! Or your house...)

One theory is: SOME Ancient creatures didn`t "get old" they just kept on growing... this theory really helps explain a LOT of things...

It may have already been said, I don`t know because I`m too lazy after working 11 hours to bother reading anything other than the first page of comments, but this looks like a Wright whale. Whatever the specific species, it is definitely a baleen whale, which uses baleen, filter-like teeth, to strain krill (shrimp-like crustaceans) out of the water. It doesn`t eat fish, let alone humans. Its esophagus isn`t nearly wide enough.

Yes, this is a right whale, so it feeds on zooplanton, but its also a rather large wild animal so there is a risk.

davymid while thats true (you got that from QI, didn`t you?), they can`t swallow anything bigger than a grapefruit, they can certainly get an enormous amount of stuff into their mouth before it rushes down their throat. For example, some people can get their whole fist in their mouth.. but it`s impossible to swallow it whole.

@5Cats, the largest estimate for a Megalodon is about 19m (most are estimated to be 9-10m. This is about the same maximum estimate size of the largest animal on your diagram - Leesichthys. Blue whales average 25m+ up to 30m and are therefore considerably larger, and widely accepted to be the largest animal to have ever lived.

As for Giant Megalodon, I think too much Sci-Fi Channel perhaps? :)

Is this picture of an Orca? NO. I am not trolling, fancy has asked this question at least twice before, he is the troll. Most whales are filter feeders, so they couldn`t open their mouths to swallow a man, because of the baleen, and they wouldn`t be interested anyway because they are not predatory, hence why you can swim quite close to them.

Fair enough - but there`s a big difference between ALL whales and most whales. You could argue that the Orca is just a big dolphin, but the sperm whale could easily swallow a man whole. The fact that neither orca, nor sperm whale have attacked human divers in the wild is odd. Especially transient orca`s, maybe they know we aren`t very calorific.

..and I`ve swum with a whale in the Pacific - but only a 25` Minke. The slightly dodgy bit was the chum slick I was snorkeling in, with 3Km of water beneath me, and frigates picking at my snorkel.

@Not_A_Bear: Thanks for the linky, but that`s specificly about "living" animals. Elephants are WAY smaller than many dinosaurs, eh?
However, it could still be that Blue Whales are bigger than the dinosaur-era critters too...

I Blame This TV Series! I`m certain it`s mentioned in one of these episodes...

@piperfawn: lolz! At least you know Pinocchio`s telling the truth about that whale story, eh?

I`ll happy agree that Blue Whales are the all-time champions! Let`s hope we humans don`t wipe them off the map, eh?

That was me trying to point out the first line of the paragraph I linked to; "A member of the order Cetacea, the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is believed to be the largest animal ever to have lived".

P.S. To link to a specific section on a Wikpedia page you put # at the end of the url (without the brackets), or click on a section in the table of contents before copying and pasting the url (which will add the # for you).

Yes, you were the first to say so :-) Your linky had the page on the proper spot, which reminded me I forgot how to do that...
