Yeah. Another post that gives people the opportunity to sound either rational, or like bigoted moronic rednecks. Proceed.

I`m going to try the rational route, HG. The way I see it, allowing members of the LGBT community to marry does not threaten or affect "traditional" marriage or heterosexual couples in *any* way. As such, and because the government actually provides rights and privileges associated with the contract it calls "marriage", it is patently unconstitutional and discriminatory to not allow LGBT marriage. That is all.

In America one religion does not have the authority to write the rules for everyone else. Actually, I take that back. If that is what you want join the Mormon church and move to Utah.

The sexist clauses, including the ones about “purity” and polygamy, and the harsh penalties proscribed are at worst similar and often less harsh/unfair than neighboring/ comparable cultures.

The Israelites were the only ones around to have marriage contracts which protected the wife (or wives), and those contracts were mandatory.

These proscriptions seem harsh because they are ancient. The fact remains women under the Torah had more protection, security and rights than the majority (or all) of the women in surrounding/comparable cultures. In context some of the ‘negative’ ones are even protections rather than punishments (ie: the marrying the brother one). So at the very least, take it in context before laughing at how unfair old-timey people were and blaming the only group to write it all down.

The “brother marrying the widow” thing was for the woman’s benefit, not the man’s. A single widow without children in an ancient society was presumably above marrying age and no longer ‘pure.’ In ancient society, especially one based on herding or agriculture, it would be difficult if not impossible for such a single woman to provide for herself or find a new spouse/family.

Actually, it were the Sadducees, in Mark 12, that questioned Christ about marrying brothers, and Jesus said to them "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?". In other words, "You don`t know what you`re talking about".

None of the `Men of God` were perfect, Only Christ was perfect. Nothing in the Bible says that one has to behave like David, Solomon, Abraham, etc... We are to emulate Christ, as much as possible.

"None of the `Men of God` were perfect, Only Christ was perfect."

Ok Ive been off this forum for months, but I could smell the stupid.

    Christ was perfect Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Lets see here, he commited the original Sin, knowledge. Practiced necromancy on himself. Took Baths, Kept his beard trimmed and in shape, and wore clean cloths (Vanity). Practiced witchcraft (Water Walking, lying hands, shennanigans). Took a wife, and yes, your closed mind cant comprehend even the (Ahem) Son of God needed a little human love too.

Jesus was Human. He had human desires, did human things, and lived a human life. He sinned, he did somethings for personal game. Dont fool yourself into thinking he was perfect.

"We are to emulate Christ, as much as possible.
    "

So go out, sin, marry a prostitute, smoke alot of opium annd convice people you are a son of god. Sounds like the American way of life.

Here, let me sum this up for you.

"In the beginning, MATH HAPPENED!!!! And physics has brought us there where we are today. The end"

Hey look, earths history, where no one was a god, no one had to fight, and people just exist.

Notice how only one has a reference to where it is in the bible, yeah, cause the rest isn`t actually in there. If your going to pick a fight, at least do some fact checking first.

Pay attention, the only section quoted, actually is talking about a man marrying a women and than accusing her of not being a virgin and giving her a bad name. It`s than up to the parents to prove she is still a virgin. The actual quote from Deuteronomy 22:20-21 is "If, however the charge is true and no proof of the girls virginity can be found, she shall still be brought to her father`s house and there men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Isreal by being promiscuous in her father`s house. You must purge the evil from among you."

Keep in mind that`s the old testament, which is a lousy weapon to use against the new testament, since it`s really the history of how the new testament came to be and not meant to be followed by Christians.

Christ would never go to war.
Christ would never own a gun.
    Christ would tax the rich.
Christ would increase social programs to help the poor.
Christ would protect the animals and the environment.

Anybody think Christ would vote republican?

The old testament is the word of God. God is infallible. You can`t just call do-over.

Christians should have just taken the new testament and said it was a totally new book with no connection to the old testament with Jesus being the son of a totally new God. There really would have been nothing for us to bash on, except obviously for the complete absurdity of it.

"...since it`s really the history of how the new testament came to be and not meant to be followed by Christians."
EgalM, I mean this respectfully, (seriously, I`m not gonna follow with a tirade of insult.) It is the same God, yes? I know that the new testament goes off in a different direction from the old, but does this override the rules and commands set forth by God previously, the 10 commandments for instance?

I`m not sure you can discount the old testament as being separate and apart from the new. If you open the door, it`s open. If old testament books are used as a citation by a Christian in defense or support of a Christian ideal, rule, or moral state, then in turn you must accept a counter point using the same reference.

I hate posting right after my last but after looking, in defense of the inseparability of Old and New Testament doctrine, Mark 12:24-26 King James version:
24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
Jesus himself is citing the book of Moses as binding precedent.
One example yes, but an example nonetheless.

I think Jesus had some awesome teachings. The Old Testament not so much. If I was religious I think I would need to omit the Old testament. Sometimes I wonder if Jesus thought the same thing but that he had to pretend the Old Testament was valid in order to keep people listening so they would get his real message.

Matthew 5:17 and elsewhere show that Jesus regarded OT laws as sacrosanct. Paul was the one who came up with the idea that the law had been fulfilled and therefore no longer applied. Mainly because Paul was pushing the franchise among the gentiles and the whole circumcision and adhering to Mosaic laws thing was a deal breaker for a lot of potential converts.

Jesus`s teachings only really make sense if you believe, as he did, that the end of the world and judgement were coming within a few years.

Abandon your family, take no thought for tomorrow, give up your worldly goods? Fine if the End Times are actually here but a recipe for disaster if you want a viable society in the long term. Love your enemies, turn the other cheek? They will gut you like a fish.
