Asphyxiation via smoke inhalation or toilet air? Tough choice.

I saw this on QI. It was a safety device in the event of fire when the building was filled with smoke and you needed to be able to breathe.

zombunny nailed it. If there`s a fire and the house is full of smoke, you can do this to get air. It vents outside so at least you can breathe.

What freddyferret said! Sure it would probably suck, but it beats the alternative...

"Jenkem" is fictional and this is a device that allows one to breathe "clean" air during a fire.

I can`t help wondering how much methane (flammable) is in that "clean" air.

I remember seeing this a while back on a documentary and thought that it was a great idea - at least as a temporary solution (won`t help if the fire gets you).

I don`t think that there is much fear of methane - after all, methane is a heavy gas and naturally sinks to the lowest point possible (which is why ya never hear of methane poisoning in bathrooms today). Besides that, from what I remember, there is a replacable filter just before the mouthpiece which filters out any gases that might be in the plumbing line.

They should install these in all public buildings over two stories with instructions for use.

I`d recommend flushing it a few of times to push the poo as far down the line as possible.

For the record, methane is lighter than air.
