I always intended to travel after university, but work, money and girlfriends get in the way.

I still intend to travel as best I can whilst working though. Maybe in a few years I`ll give up the job for a while and see the world.

Wow, great advice. I`ll just take two or three weeks off work and do that. And by the way, if you have to travel to another country to witness global climate change, is it really global?

i`s amazing that some people can see others in terrible need and their first response seems selfish.... how travel changes me.... how seeing them makes me different... how I will feel different! Why not see people in need and do something to help. Like International charity. Use your money to make a difference for a family. We should help people not because we feel guilty, but because it`s the right thing to do. You don`t have to go that far to see these conditions. Say what you will about Christians... They do more for charity and benevolence than everyone else.

The guilt part is up to you. No one is asking you to feel guilty, just to gain some perspective, to realize you are a resident of a great big diverse world and not just your insulated little corner of it. This is excellent advice.

    @McGovern1981
That is one of the stupidest comments you`ve ever made, and that is really saying something! It shows how this advice might be very good for you, since I`m certain you don`t even recognize the ignorance you`ve just displayed.

Travelling doesn`t have to be all that expensive. You can go a long way with just the cost of one ipad. The plane ticket is the only thing that you can`t cut the cost of, other than that, definitely youngsters don`t really need that much comfort during travels.

As someone whom has done this I feel the need to inform you what it`s like.
You`ll find nothing decent to eat, and when you do eat something you`ll have crippling diarrhea for a week.
The locals will usually dislike you unless they think they can take some of your money, then they will never stop hassling you.
You`ll only be able to afford the cheap hotels. Those hotels will be tiny and smell like ass and mold. They`ll put you in a small Room with 5 young Frenchmen that will smell even worse than the room. And you`ll never be able to sleep, because they`ll stay up all night talking crap about you. If you are from a cold country like me, you`ll overheat constantly and the first 2 weeks in the tropics you`ll regularly collapse from heatstroke and vomit all over yourself. If I did this again I`d just pay a bit more and stay in the tourist areas. It`s not as exciting, but then again, you won`t be mugged 5 times in a month.

if you believe this you`ll believe anything. if you go to these countries you`ll come back and go `thank god/science i was born in the west!` even the more developed 3rd world countries are lacking in what most people would consider basic amenities. it will, however, be a fantastic adventure and will add texture to your life and give you valuable life experiences.. DO IT !!!

He`s right, the first thing I said when stepping foot back on American soil was "I`m so glad I was born here!" You look at things in a whole new light and begin to get annoyed when you hear people who take it for granted. As much as internet memes piss me off, that whole "First World Problems" meme is a perfect example of the kind of trivial sh*t people worry about.

dm2754 - I don`t know what reservations you are visiting, but calling the rez a 3rd world is stretching it. The difference being the simple things like pluming, water, and electricity.

In Washington, where I live, the conditions on the reservations went from bad to horrible when the salmon industry went belly up. Most tribes have built casinos to help create a few jobs, and to help assist displaced fisheries.

I totally agree that people should travel. It`s amazing how clueless people are when they have never set foot outside the US. Travel to other countries doesn`t have to be expensive. Whenever I go to Europe my hotel rooms are far cheaper than most hotels in the US and taking the trains from place to place is cheap as well. And Europe is way more expensive than the places this guy is suggesting to visit.

@McGovern1981 - So you`re criticizing Henry Rollins for travelling and suggesting others should too so they can see the world in a different way?! True, he can afford it and has the time do so, unlike most of us, but he also backs up his words with actions.

Right around this time last year, he hosted a charity event and had all his friends in the music industry show up for an organization called "Drop In The Bucket" that helps bring clean water and sanitation services to schools in the war torn region of Africa between Southern Sudan and Northern Uganda. Yeah, sounds to me like he`s a rich, out of touch Hollywood a$$hole. Do a little research before you open your mouth to talk sh*t abou

@McGovern1981 - Well, if you still want to act like a complete & total douchebag about it, here are some more facts for you.

In 2009 Henry Rollins listed his home for sale. It was a 2100 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house on less than 1/2 an acre in Los Angeles.

In 2010, the median "ideal home size" in America was, guess what?! 2100 sq ft!!! That`s about the size of the house I grew up in and it sure as hell wasn`t a "mansion."

Been saying this for years. I know not everyone can, but if you`re able to, you should. The most xenophobic people I know (not just Americans, Europeans and others too) are those who haven`t travelled. Many not even outside their own local area.

It`s a cliché, but it`s true - travel broadens the mind, people.

Also, @McGovern: "You know what else is stupid??? LIVING 12 MILES FROM THE ONLY SOURCE OF WATER!!!"
Don`t be a dick all your life.

I guess you missed the first freaking sentence: "I beg young people to travel"? He wasn`t talking to old phuks like us with mortgages and kids and such...

If I was young with no responsibilities, I would save up a grand or two in cash, put a plane ticket and a Eurail pass on a credit card and hit Europe for a couple months or as long as my money held out. Hostels are cheap, and you tend to meet some great people you would never otherwise get to know. It can be very educational and eye-opening, well worth the investment. We all could benefit from a little adventure!
