A bit drawn-out, but quite plausible. In fact, no less plausible than any other religion.

You`re not missing anything. The show sucks, makes no sense, and "the bad guys" are stupid rectangular robots that you could tip over and they`d be powerless.

In one sense, Dr Who is better than Jesus. Jesus only comes twice. Dr Who comes again and again and again.

It can`t be considered a religion...yet. All good religions have a few atrocities under their belt. After a few million people are murdered in the name of "who" then we can call it religion.

Well now our European cousins finally have something specifically appealing to their interests ;-)

And crakr apparently just reflexively rejects Mr. Geert`z definition because it makes his brain sad :-(

QueenZira: Mr. Geertz`a definition is in error. A religion is more than just mere belief.

Bronies believe in `My Little Pony`, that doesn`t make their belief a religion.

Geert`z defintion: Religion is a system of symbols that acts to establish powerful, pervasive and long lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence.

Did you not even bother to watch the vid at all?

My 7 yo son loves The Doctor. Belonging to a universe bigger than one`s self, understanding that one`s actions may have far-reaching implications, marching forward in the face of impossible odds for the greater good... Maybe Whovianism isn`t so bad after all.

QueenZira: He danced around the word `belief` in a very lengthy way.

I could just as easily say, "A feathered, web-footed fowl of moderate size with a yellow bill that quacks" without saying the word `Duck`.

The one thing a religion requires is for it`s followers to have faith in the accuracy and validity of the religion. In other words, they have to believe it`s real.

"The one thing a religion requires is for it`s followers to have faith in the accuracy and validity of the religion. In other words, they have to believe it`s real."

Not really. In most large religions there will be a number of followers with doubts, and a large number of people who follow for social reasons.

You take that to an extreme and you have
Pastafarianism. The followers of which consider their religion is just as `real` and valid as any other religion, yet few of its followers really expect to end up drinking from beer volcanoes.

    Yes, it is.
    So is Star Wars.
Star Trek has actual churches. They dance, chant and recite dialogue...
    And Galactica.
    And Beanie Babies.
