McDonnell-Douglas F4. Tail configuration is a dead giveaway. Not hard to identify at all.

They are big, but the Navy had a variant that was carrier based. We used to find them in the sky by the black smoke trails they left behind....like an old Harley:)

These planes are no longer made, but when they were it was in St. Louis. The factory is still there, next to Lambert airport, but they are building F-18 Hornets, F-15 Eagles and others.

I found it. It`s a McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2 (F-4M). Notice that the wings are hinged to fold up, meaning it was carrier-based.

I saw the Blue Angels back in the early `70s when they were flying F-4Js. Those things are freakin` monsters.

My husband`s guess is an F-4 Phantom. Vietnam war era? Sometimes used as drones now? Something like that.

It`s a phantom. RAF. It doesn`t have the M-61 20-mm gatling gun under the chin; it might be a reconnaissance job, but I think the Brits` F-4s (FG-1/FGR-2) typically didn`t have it. This is either an old photo, or a rich hobbyist. It`s only carrying fuel tanks and two intert (fake) missiles, the blue tube in the Sparrow slots.

F4 - answered instantly. Was I right? (checks other comments.) Yes. It`s actually a highly recognizable aircraft, as whodat said. Maybe its the air intakes - distinctive design where, I don`t know, the outer verticle edge extends further forward that the inner edge? You know what I mean.

@USAF27 - When were you in S. Korea? My older brother is around your age (he`s 42) and he was in the USAF stationed in S. Korea from `89 thru `91.

MD F4 Phantom II modified with Rolls Royce engines for Royal Navy/RAF service (although this is an RAF airframe it might have started life with the RN as they transferred after the decommissioning of the last large RN carrier); although more powerful than the original engines the aircraft was slightly slower due to aerodynamic changes.
