It is not perfect. It is simply as far as they could get. It is the first step to universal single payer healthcare like every other civilized country in the world.

Healthcare should not be a for profit business in my opinion. Healthcare should be a right.

The people who rally against government healthcare would have rallied against social security or medicare when it was set up. We all agree those are pretty ok now right?

    "some guy being "obese"."

The surgeon general is Regina Benjamin and while she isn`t skinny, I wouldn`t call her obese.

It works in Sweden because the Swedish pay huge taxes to pay for health care.

The issue is that no one in America is willing to pay those prices for healthcare. It cannot be funded by current tax revenues.

`Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine is a 1961 LP featuring Ronald Reagan. In this more than ten-minute recording, Reagan "criticized Social Security for supplanting private savings and warned that subsidized medicine would curtail Americans` freedom" and that "pretty soon your son won`t decide when he`s in school, where he will go or what he will do for a living. He will wait for the government to tell him."`

All those opposed to Medicare and Social Security, raise your hand.

Dead_mind, Obamacare isn`t the Swedish model? You know there are more than two options, right? And they probably privatized it because they realized, like the rest of Europe, that there is no more money to live like they all wish they could.

And it`s funny because they are unhealthy people advocating that you be healthy. It`s not a guy who is obese, it`s a woman - the Surgeon General. I`m sorry, that`s just a little ironic. These people honestly can`t push forth anti-obesity policies and have an obese Surgeon General.

*I belong to no party, so don`t attack me in a partisan fashion. Be independent, find the irony in our chief health officer being very unhealthy. It`s liberating. The letter next to her name - imagine it doesn`t exist.

step one is being able to realize that perhaps spending ~35% more than the country`s domestic product for about 20 years is going to put us in this position. Every american will have to suck it up and pay off the debt that has been accrued.

Of coarse!!!! Fact finding missions!!! That`s where it all went.

It wasn`t a baby-boomer generation we saw getting older for the last 60 years, and were warned about the economics of it for 60 years. But was unable to do anything because it was considered "unfair" and "cruel" despite them living longer.

We have two simplified options here:
    1) Only provide healthcare to people who can afford it or have health insurance. Otherwise, let just them die for being irresponsible.
    .Or.
    2) Mandate that everyone get health insurance.

I think #2 is more humane.
Is Obamacare the best way to do it? It does have some good things. This is a big inner conflict in my thinking because otherwise I`m a huge Libertarian.

I imagine that a few centuries from now universal healthcare will be the norm kind of like how primary education is now. Centuries ago, only the privileged got even basic education. We really need to have access to healthcare for everyone. I don`t know what the answer is but this is a beginning, not necessarily the finality of it.

Right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness... it`s the first one.

I challenge you to find a plan that costs $13 a month.

    The math:
    Xbox Live subscription fee:
    $60 per yr /12 = $5
    Netflix basic package:
    $8 monthly.

I didn`t mean to insinuate that the cost of healthcare is equal to those. They were just two on a list. Go ahead and add delivery pizza, cable TV, beer, video games, DVDs, iPhones, designer jeans, rims, etc.

The point is, I know LOTS of people that don`t have health insurance and can absolutely afford it.

The most uninformed statement I`ve seen today. Doctors are always being held accountable for the smallest things they do, especially in this sue-happy society. They pay out the butt for malpractice insurance and go to college for years and years, taking on tens to hundreds of thousands in debt to get that job.

    HolyGod`s greatest hits.

    Obama said he wanted specifics.
Romney said he would cut PBS as one of two specific things he actually pointed out.
His biggest things are adding jobs and cutting the deficit.
He is saying he can do both by making budget cuts.
PBS is one of only two things he actually said.
    How is that "off handed"
    Seems kinda important to me.

If you can afford X-Box Live and Netflix you can afford health insurance.

They sent millions of jobs overseas and then blame those same folks for being unemployed. Meanwhile they`re making money hand over fist with their foreign investments and hiding it untaxed offshore while the small businessman has been shouldered with making up for the massive tax cuts they received. Small business owners; You should be on the same side of this issue as the middle class, working poor and the welfare class. As long as the wealthy continue to receive the Bush tax cuts YOU will have to carry the burden of making up the difference. If you insist on cutting welfare, corporate welfare outstrips domestic welfare several times over. And another thing,Demand is what creates jobs. Give the tax relief to the middle class and below. They`ll spend it. Tax relief to big business just goes into the coffers, not into creating jobs. Big business has time and time again negotiated, through their congressional operatives, tax relief with the promise of creating jobs only to pocket the cash.

Have you ever lived anywhere else? Have you ever traveled much to foreign countries?

I have and I tend to ask people about it. I have never met a single person in Canada or Europe that complained about single payer healthcare. The people who have it like it. All I know HG is that a government that has the power to give you anything you want has the power to take from you everything you have. I provide for myself and my family. I`m not trying to argue with you. I see your point. It`s just not for me but I won`t be able to opt out. I don`t need government assistance. I don`t want government assistance. But under PBO I have no choice.

As for SS...I could invest that money better than the fed and as for public Ed, since the mid seventies and DOE things have gone straight to hell.

I believe in individuals free to pursue their dreams, not a bloated federal government empowered to "take care of everybody."

"I provide for myself and my family."

You really don`t probably. You probably don`t pay enough in taxes to cover your family`s share of the federal, state, and local government services you utilize. If you add up things like national defense, public schools, fireman and police, public roads, and all other public non-assistance programs (so not including things like welfare and food stamps which you don`t use) the number is over $5T annually (If I remember correctly). That is roughly $17,000 for every person in the country.

So if you have a wife and 2 kids, your family should pay $68,000 to truly provide for yourselves. If you don`t then other people are paying for the services you use.

Not trying to be argumentative, just something to think about it.

"I`m a Canadian and I DO NOT like our healthcare system. It`s `good` but not as good as many other nations. Waiting 4 months to JUST SEE a doctor? = not good."

As a man married to a Canadian and living in Canada I`ve never had to wait 4 months to see a doctor here. I make an appointment and I get serviced just like I do in the States. Not sure if you are living in some backwater part of the Country up in the northwest territories but here in Ontario I don`t have those problems.
