    people who say Tom Baker was the best grew up watching the doctor in the 80`s

    people who say David Tennant was the best just started watching the doctor in the 2005 `reincarnation`

    personally, I don`t think Matt Smith is all that bad, and I thought Eccleston deserved more time.

    in the end, everyone is right. there is not a `best` doctor, just like there isn`t a best ice cream or soft drink.

    Bakers make better doctors.

    @CodeJockey - there were some female sidekicks, but never a female Doctor.

    @Whitegryphyn

    There are indeed some missing, but all of the regular TV doctor whos are there.

    Peter cushing played him in a couple of films in the 60s or 70s i think it was. Also a couple of actors stood in for William Hartnell in the tv series but only for a couple of shows - and someone stood in for Pat Troughton too a couple of times but I think those episodes are part of the lost episodes that the BBC archive department destroyed in the 70`s.

    yeah, i know i`m sad and need to get a life, but I have every surviving episode made of doctor who as it was my fave show as a kid (tom baker years) and i enjoy watching them all again.

    @Darkmagic - I did watch it in the 80s, but I saw Pertwee first. I still think Baker was better, but I will say it`s just my opinion. It just isn`t always the first one you saw. Baker had more flair, more humor, and his attitude made for some great scenes.

    even though peter cushing played him in a couple of films, they`re not strictly considered true doctor who canon, so that may be why they left him off the list but included the 8th doctor paul mcgann even though he`d only done the 1 offical film. Or it may be because McGann also has done a lot of the doctor who audio plays (which generally are considered doctor who canon) for big finish as well as the film.

    @Freddy

    "Baker had more flair, more humor, and his attitude made for some great scenes."

    Baker is my fave too, and i agree about the humour and flair. he`s just reprised the 4th doctor role for the big finish audio plays and the first couple I`ve listened to so far he seems to have lost a bit of the humour and mischievousness so just comes across a lot more grumpy.

    @Listypoos You are correct sir. The Peter Cushing thing was kind of different. The Doctor was an actual human doctor who invented the TARDIS. It borrowed elements from the show (like Daleks), but it was its own deal. It couldn`t fit in the canon the way the 8th Doctor film kind of can. I still don`t care for the Doc 8 film, and it makes some stupid claims about the Doctor, too, that are ignored in major canon. But by and large, it can at least be harmonized.

    Frankly, I`d love to see McGann have another crack at the character in a vehicle that wasn`t doomed for failure. Maybe with the anniversary come up...

    Born in 85 so by the time I was a fan and not just watching it due to my Dad, Sylvester McCoy had finished his run as the Doctor. I watched them all eventually with my Dad and always liked Baker and Troughton. Dont get me wrong, I watch the new ones and have liked each incarnation but i cant help but feel both Tennant and Smith miss that simmering cauldron of anger that was always just waiting to burst forth that so many of the others had. I like the quirkiness but it seems this is all the Doctor has become when he used to be so much more

    See if you can get your hands on some of the Big Finish Doctor Who Audio Plays... they`re full cast and several of the old doctors have reprised their roles. Peter D, Colin B, Silvester M, Tom B, and Paul McGann.

    He`s a lot better at playing who than you`d think from that crap film.

    I just started watching Who earlier this year, after my friend dogged me to watch it. I only gave in when he recommended the episode written by Neil Gaiman (The Doctor`s Wife). One thing lead to another and before you knew it, I`d watched all of the new Who series in a few weekends. I am not afraid to admit it, Tennant is my favorite with Catherine Tate as my favorite companion. My friend and I now engage in lengthy discussions on Who and I`m no longer ashamed to admit that I love Doctor Who.

    This is my son`s favorite show (besides the UK Top Gear) and I`ll freely admit it`s mine too. I wish we had stuff like this in the US. Firefly was great, but it only lasted one season. Americans want all our shows to basically be soap operas. Give me a good plot with some imagination and I`m all over it. Give me melodrama and I either fall asleep or throw up.

    I`ll always think of Tom Baker as Dr. Who.

    And shouldn`t the plural of Dr. Who be Drs. Who?
