So, we`re all on board with government force to "correct" perceived social ills. And, of course, if a law is passed, then obesity will end overnight because that`s how those things work . . . kind of like Prohibition and the War on Drugs.

You can`t make the argument that fat people cost us money, because they die younger, which saves us money. Don`t like that statement? Just see how smoking saves us money too:

This is so absurd I do not even know where to start. I vote we shorten the work and school day, decrease traffic and the time spent commuting then add more green space and greater public safety so people can actually get out. Also, lower the cost of healthy foods. I just paid $10 for a salad. Blaming obesity on something so simple as soda size and the person is beyond simple minded. Dumb politicians. And if people choose to be fat it is their choice. I think people over the age 55 cost Americans more in healthcare costs than than anyone else.... watch out Mayor...

Orange juice is also a sugary beverage containing 3 grams sugar / oz to coke`s 3.25 g sugar/ oz. (and from a fountain, with ice probably back down to 3 g/oz). Apple juice is the same in terms of sugar/oz as coke.

So, in the interest of preventing obesity, they should also come under scrutiny.

Ban fruit juice, for the sake of the kids, ban it now!

@spanerbulb:
Quite right, if people are stupid enough to pour that sh*t down their throat by the gallon then they need to be treated like children.
Actually, what you imply here is the exact opposite of responsibility. You cannot be responsible for the outcome of an action if you had no choice in the means of that action...

@spanerbulb

Quite wrong we don`t want the government controlling every aspect of our lives like the UKistanians seem to want. Watch where that gets you.

First they came for the Jews, but I did nothing because I’m not a Jew. Then they came for the socialists, but I did nothing because I’m not a socialist. Then they came for the Catholics, but I did nothing because I’m not a Catholic. Finally, they came for me, but by then there was no one left to help me. – Pastor Father Niemoller (1946)

1. All people are going to do is buy more drinks... which gives more taxes. Way to go Mayor!

2. Why should the government meddling in what we do with our own bodies?! If I want to be a fat tub of lard, so be it!

You still can`t bring a coke from the store into the movie theater. Also it`s ridiculous to go into McDonalds with a large bottle in your hand. Off course they can`t ban you from eating ridiculous amounts of sugar, but it`s a start.
I approve.

Do we really want everybody to be in perfect shape and live a long, long time? I thing maybe sugary drinks, fatty foods, and cigarettes save us a bundle of money by making people die young. 8o-90 percent of health care dollars is spent on the elderly... and yes, I pulled that figure out of my butt.

Republicans make laws to wiretap you without a warrant, detain you indefinitely without a trial but liberals are the ones trying to control your lives with their 16oz drinks ! lol

Bring on the fat tax. 1% of income for every lb overweight. Deficit solved.

I have always felt MORE thirsty after drinking any kind of soda, especially Cola. Why don`t you just drink something else, like water, or something more natural than a soda, like Snapple? You invented it in America anyway. Liptons Ice Tea is good too. As for Bloomberg being a Nazi, at least he`s taking responsibility for his city`s people, which is more than they do for themselves sometimes. You know it`s bad for you, why are you still insisting on having it? USA = kids who don`t want to grow up. Now you`re going to moan about the cost in tax dollars in healthcare for fat people, and dentistry. Plus, it`s just damn GREEDY.

In the UK, a large is 500ml... which is 16oz... the same as a US small?!

Why would anyone need to drink that much of a fizzy drink? Have a normal size, then if you`re still thirsty later, get another!

Well hey hey. I hate soda...never drink it, but the larger size sodas probably dont have as much sugar in them as the video says considering more than half the cup is almost always filled with ice!

it isnt about banning soda but allowing only certain sizes, i think it is a good thing. however big sizes should be for water because we need more water.

I really like Bloomberg, but I don`t like this policy.

I like someone attempting to make us healthier and forcing people to make better decisions. However, I can`t make that fit with my overwhelming philosophy of freedom of personal choice.

It`s not a soda quantity ban, it`s an apportionment ban. Soda dispensaries were obviously getting too much of the cha-ching with their ever growing cups that were not actually presenting the consumer with a bulk savings. Forcing them to buy more cups is where the profit is.

Yes, Bloomberg is a douche. All this crazy sh*t he`s been doing has pretty much screwed his chances of being re-elected. (not sure if he`s even eligible to run for a 4th term but if he does I sure as hell won`t be voting for him)

"If people choose to be obese, let them. It`s not significantly hurting anyone else."

Not physically but it sure as hell is hurting our pocket books with the increases to health insurance that all their health problems are causing.

Good, except for the fact that they didn`t take into account that most fast food places fill your cup with mostly ice.

I live in New York, they really love picking winners and losers here. It`s unfair that 7/11 and local Middle Eastern delis will get a regulation advantage because.... "magic".

But the worst part about the law is that it will not make anyone skinny. Obesity will rise, just as it is everywhere in the West.

The only way the government can stop obesity is to either ban a huge amount of different foods, or to have 1-2 hours of daily, mandatory government PE. That is no exaggeration. That`s the only way the government can stop obesity. The rest is on us, individuals.
