Also, MILLIONS of Muslims? What did these millions do?
Protest? That`s fine, so what? They should have freedom of speech and assembly too.
Kill the ambassador? Not acceptable, but that wasn`t millions, was it? That was a handful.
Attack embassies? Again, not acceptable, but again, not millions. If millions were attacking embassies there would be a lot more deaths than the few hundred total across all countries.

This is exactly what I mean - the actions of a few being ascribed to millions. OK for Muslim terrorists, not OK for the WBC.
Y`all have NO problem equating WBC with "all Christians" BUT when millions of Muslims do something? Y`all chant: They don`t represent ALL Muslims!
Not the case. I`m not saying WBC represent all Christians, I`m saying there are plenty of psychos on the fringes of your religion, just as there are plenty of psychos on the fringes of Islam (or indeed any religion).

It`s a direct response to when Christians describe Islam as a violent, hateful religion because of the actions of terrorists. If we did the same looking at WBC, you (rightly) point out that they don`t represent every Christian. But some of you seem incapable of applying the same logic to Islam.

I`m not defending Islam, I`m treating both religions the same, applying exactly the same logic and arguments to each.
their behavior is antithetical to being a Christian
So is the behaviour of plenty of Christians. Ted Haggard f*cked a male prostitute repeatedly, but now he`s back preaching. Is he not a Christian because of that? I thought everyone `sinned`. How much do you have to do it before you`re no longer Christian?
Jesus never said, "Condemn your enemies"
Then why does any Christian speak out about topics like gay marriage and condemn it as sinful?

Also, the WBC would probably respond with lines like:
Matthew 10:34 - "I came not to send peace, but a sword"
Luke 22:36 - "he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one"
Matthew 28:19 - "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them ..."

Lev 19:17 - "thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him" (although they obviously ignore the first part of this verse)

While we`re quoting bible verses:
Mark 12:31 - The second is this: `Love thy neighbor as thy self.`

Jesus didn`t add "Unless he`s gay, follows a different religion, is an atheist/agnostic, or a different color."

THIS? From a guy who just accused others of the "No True Scotsman" fallacy? Really @kummi90 really?

@almightybob and @davymid: What "we" are saying is: Y`all have NO problem equating WBC with "all Christians" BUT when millions of Muslims do something? Y`all chant: They don`t represent ALL Muslims!
K?
I`ve used "extreme" examples to illustrate what "you" (the IAB Atheist crew) are consistantly doing.

Davy:
Muslims aren`t lobbying our schools here in the western world to stop teaching the scientific fact of evolution, or the actual age of the planet, or the fact that earth is warming in part because of human activity, or homosexuality is a sin that must be eradicated.
Actually yes they are, they`ve already taken over some school boards and are insisting their religious point of view be taught there, the sharia.

almightybob:
Who decides which congregations are "real" Christians?
I`m sorry Bob but their behavior is antithetical to being a Christian. Jesus never said, "Condemn your enemies" or "Hate your neighbor" and that`s exactly what WBC does.

Matthew 7:15-16 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?"

Gotta love the mindset from Christians when such a post as this comes up. It`s basically: "You think WE`RE crazy? You should check out them Muslims!"

No, we atheists think you`re both f*cking mentally retarded, whatever your religion. But Muslims aren`t lobbying our schools here in the western world to stop teaching the scientific fact of evolution, or the actual age of the planet, or the fact that earth is warming in part because of human activity, or homosexuality is a sin that must be eradicated. etc et f*cking cetera.

Moonbattery is moonbattery. Don`t give us rational people that - "You think we`re crazy? Check out THOSE guys!".

Shut the f*ck up. You`re both equally irrational.

Not sure what the Ayn Rand quote was meant to suggest there CJ. Are you suggesting she would have considered the religous to be "the civilised man", or agree with... pretty much anything you`ve said? Because I`m pretty sure she wouldn`t.
HiEv: Westboro church doesn`t count as `Christian`, they don`t belong to any regularly accepted congregation in America.
And here I thought all you had to do to be a Christian was accept Jesus in your heart as your personal lord and saviour.
Who decides which congregations are "real" Christians?

"No True Scotsman" fallacy.

"Also, if your going to start pointing fingers at the crusades, then allow me to point fingers at atheist regimes like Russia, China and Cambodia.
Those three countries have killed tens of millions of people for their religious beliefs. "

Jesus Christ, I don`t comprehend why some people chose to ignore replies, and keep spewing this blatantly obvious bullpoo argument. The difference is correlation and cause-and-effect. The dictators being atheist has nothing to do with their policies and genocides. They just happen to be atheist.

"By statistics alone that would make atheism far worse than any one religions `ethnic cleansing`."

So would facial hair and gender. Again, correlation...

Some of us. To a former Catholic like myself, I have no problem taking swings as both. I have always retained that Islam is a BS religion, started by a warlord hellbent on expansion; Islam is a great way for its followers to justify aggressive expansion for its militant leaders, and also a great way to keep people under control. These middle eastern countries are like children, instead of using logic and understanding they use doctrine and hate to solve their problems. There`s no talking with them, there`s no reasoning with them, they`re incapable of it. To make it worse, they get their hands on guns and you have an entire region based on gang life, essentially. Don`t think, just do what you`re told, and kill those who don`t.

"In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man." - Ayn Rand

Throughout history `civilized` and `savage` generally comes down to whoever has the better military technology. So, yeah, they`ll probably win and exterminate or enslave the `savages`.

And, no. You haven`t answered the question.

If you do think you see that, it`s just your personal bias causing you to misinterpret what you read to suit your prejudices. I add my voice to the call for you to show any evidence for your claim.

And, no, trying to understand why they do things isn`t the same thing as defending them. You can understand and explain someone else`s perspective without claiming that they`re RIGHT.

CrakrJak: "But if you really want to make the world a better place, grow some cojones and go after the really barbaric and inhumane religions first."

Why eliminate one problem at a time, when you can point out the underlying illogic of many problems at once? Saying we have to go after one at a time is nonsense.

Oh, and Christians have done far worse. Ever hear of the Crusades?

@5Cats: What you call "making excuses for", I call trying to understand a motivation and trying to figure out what can be done to prevent or perhaps limit an activity in the future--you know, learning from that past. That is in NO WAY defending an action. Not even close. At all. One is intelligent and makes good sense and might save lives. The other is a non-thinking man`s way of trying to smear his political/theological opposites.

I very very much doubt that, because people killing other people in the name of *insert deity* is one of the main reasons many atheists dislike religions - all of them.
Even saying that America, and the rest of the world, should NEVER "offend Islam" and put the laws of Allah over our own laws (especially regarding free speach) eh?
Why would any atheist say that? Atheists think all religions are equally invalid, so why would they want the laws of Islam? I don`t want laws dictated by ANY religion in my country, be they laws from Allah, Jesus, Vishnu or Thor.

OMG, I LOVE it! The conservative Christians on this board are comparing their plight, and patting themselves on the back, because they aren`t acting like people whose unemployment rate is well over 30%, and has been forever, whose daily lives include bombings, shootings and occupation from one or more foreign armies since birth and whose poverty is so crushing that we in the West can`t even begin to fathom it without seeing it first hand. Good for you, Christians, that you don`t act like them. Bravo!!! We`re effing proud of you. What a standard you`ve set for your behavior.

Now, in Mexico, however, Christians tend to burn down schools that are "possessed by the devil" (link here).

And, for the record, I am an Atheist, and I condemn ALL violence, religious or not.

Not me. Fk`em all. Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Scientologists, Sikhs, Wikkans, Druids, Jedi.

There are few exceptions. I`ll cut Buddhists a bit of slack, because they are mostly harmless, though I still consider most of them deluded on many topics. I won`t say a bad word about voodoo, because currently Bawon Samedi`s batting 1000.

@HG: I also see, over and over again, IAB Atheists ATTACK Christians for what they "might do" or did 200+ years ago, BUT turn a blind eye to what Radial Islam is doing RIGHT NOW!

Or falsely equate a tiny fringe group like the WBC (who are idiots) and the HUGE number of violent, radical and bloodthirsty Imams who are 100% supported by MILLIONS of Muslims.

And that in a Muslim nation, Church = State, there is no "seperation".

Hypocritical crap like that "gets on my last nerve" (as the Brits sometimes say...)

I will add to my post that in addition to the official acceptance of evolution by the catholic church by Pope John Paul II this one other statement has been released by Church officials:

the Vatican`s chief astronomer, Fr. George Coyne, issued a statement on 18 November 2005 saying that "Intelligent design isn`t science even though it pretends to be. If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."

And This:

Cardinal Paul Poupard added that "the faithful have the obligation to listen to that which secular modern science has to offer, just as we ask that knowledge of the faith be taken in consideration as an expert voice in humanity." He also warned of the permanent lesson we have learned from the Galileo affair, and that "we also know the dangers of a religion that severs its links with reason and becomes prey to fundamentalism."

@HolyGod:

"In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points.... Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis. In fact it is remarkable that this theory has had progressively greater influence on the spirit of researchers, following a series of discoveries in different scholarly disciplines. The convergence in the results of these independent studies—which was neither planned nor sought—constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of the theory."

-Pope John Paul II October 22, 1996, address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences,

I hate all religious debates. It makes the world overly complicated and resentful of one another.

However, I see a connection to this post and the current Muslim riots. I see this post as a legitimate religious critique, much as I see the "Anti-Islam" movie as a legitimate critique. The difference is that we don`t have a bunch of world leaders and officials calling the Christianity critique tasteless, insensitive, hateful, etc. And this isn`t just in reference this post, but also everything Richard Dawkins has said and thousands of youtube videos, etc. Meanwhile, people are dying because of the rather innocuous critiques of Islam in that movie.

And I suppose that`s the difference, then.

Here we go again... You know, a few weeks back, IAB had a picture with a quote from the Dalai Lama - "If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism will have to change." For a while I was looking for an excuse to pick on Buddhists, this post made me realize there was no such thing, but there`s this belief in Christianity that fossils and "proof" for evolution is simply placed in the rocks by Satan to deter them from the true path (I wish I was making this s#it up). Its this pathological fear of Hell that keeps these sheep in check, and so long as that exists, we will never be free of this disease that I creatively call "LA LA LA I`m not listening!"
