Ledzep - Romney and Ryan would be more of a slow, clean death, Obama would be a quick, but gruesome death.

If you just look at the economic realities, we`ve LONG crossed the Rubicon. It doesn`t really matter who is president, these problems can`t be fixed without drastic measured. There are also too many external factors against our favor like China`s closed domestic market and currency manipulation that hurt us.

Seriously, we could cut 100% of the military and raise taxes on rich people to 100% and the budget would stilllllll not be balanced.

I still don`t know why the debt matters, but this certainly is damning. He still hasn`t added as much as Bush did, and so much has been added in his term because of a recession he didn`t cause, wars he didn`t start, and tax cuts he didn`t make. However this is still damning especially considering the way he is shown speaking about the debt.

If he would have said we have to spend our way out of the recession and here is the plan, then we will work at the debt and here is the plan I would respect that. The debt could be $20T and I wouldn`t care. Saying this in the face of what is going on is pretty unforgiveable though.

HolyGod - He actually has added more debt in 4 years than Bush did in 8. Do math.

Still, people need to learn to defend Obama without defending Bush. Who cares about Bush? You can disapprove of Obama and Bush at the same time, you know? However, pointing to tax cuts and wars as the sole "cause" is a misnomer. Like I said, cutting 100% of the military and raising taxes to 100% for rich people still doesn`t balance the budget.

FoolsPrussia - Same issue. Defend Obama without attacking Bush. It`s funny, you`re defending Obama by attacking Bush for essentially doing the same things Obama has done.

But be fair, Afghanistan was just in the beginning. Iraq, like Libya, was questionable. Obama didn`t get approval in Libya. 30,000 Libyans died, which, per capita and per day, is exponentially higher than the Iraq dead. (But brown deaths don`t matter as much, right?)

Jonas Quim - Bush did his damage, but this time 4 years ago the debt was onlyyyyy 10 trillion. That means 6 trillion more in 4 years. I don`t know the exact size of the British economy, but the additional debt is probably more than the size of 2 British economies.

But bottom line - literally all of the military and tax hikes in the world could not balance this budget!

When the country is going through a recession it is the role of government to run up deficits to fill in the gap left by shrinking consumer spending. Other wise recessions become depressions.

I don`t think Keynes really intended for there to be large increases to public debt year after year, only during recessions and related to growth. But this isn`t Keynesian, just, incompetence.

America had similar debt to GDP after world war II so I still have hope it can be paid off, if action happens soon. It`s just sad the debt wasn`t caused by investing in America.

A president who is intent on going to war with Iran would drive our debt even higher. It is also hard to work on something when everyone in the other party is working against you. Replublicans have expressively said that the minute Obama got into office they were working their asses off to not work with him and get him out. Choose the lesser of two evils and think for yourselves rather then listen to the nonsense fox news spews out. In case anyone forgot, we were at a surplus before Bush came into office.

That amounts to over $50,000 for every man, woman, and child in the US, or over $200,000 for a family of 4. We`re only skating by because interest rates are under 1%, but that can`t last forever. Every 1% increase in interest rates will cost $160 billion a year. Under Carter, interest rates shot up to over 18%. If that happens again, just the INTEREST on the current debt would be $2.88 trillion per year or about double the amount of the current record deficits.

    We are so f***ed.

"Same issue. Defend Obama without attacking Bush. It`s funny, you`re defending Obama by attacking Bush for essentially doing the same things Obama has done."

I will never be the guy who defends everything Obama does. But Obama, like it or not, chose the Keynesian solution to stop our economy from getting worse, just as any other president would have done. Republicans sure like to say they wouldn`t do that now, but we all know they would have. The point I was making, just as I have made before, was that Obama`s Keynesian measures wouldn`t have made the debt numbers look quite as bad if Bush hadn`t spent so much.

I think Obama needs to pull us out of Afghanistan. Libya was a unilateral maneuver, in which we didn`t even take the military lead. I`m no fan of military adventurism, but that was much more tolerable for me than Iraq and Afghanistan. For one thing, people were getting killed by Qaddafi before we started dropping bombs.

Neither Obama or Romney are willing to fix this. Bush racked up the debt, Obama added even more. Our best chance was Ron Paul, but he didn`t make the republican ticket. Partly due to the GOP changing the rules at the last minute. All the way down to my little precinct voting, our Ron Paul delegates were disqualified because our Romney supporting precinct officer didn`t submit them correctly. There`s a third party that can save us, the Libertarian Party. Cut spending, end the drug war, end the global wars, etc.

davy: You`re omitting the fact that $4 trillion was spent over 8 years and that we also used the same to get rid of the taliban in Afghanistan.

Obama spent $6 trillion in less than 4 years. 50% more in less than half the time. And where did all that spending get us? Did it improve the economy? No. Did it lower the unemployment rate? No. Did it save people from loosing their homes? No. 46.7 million people are on food stamps a 50% increase since 2008. Gasoline costs twice what it did in 2008. Obama hasn`t even signed a budget bill in the last 3 1/2 years.

Obama gives himself an `incomplete` grade. When I went to school `incomplete` equaled an F. He has failed, even he knows it.

"HolyGod - He actually has added more debt in 4 years than Bush did in 8. Do math."

Oh lord. It becomes so difficult to have these discussions when every time I have to educate the people I am talking to, but here it is again.

Bush took office on January 20, 2001.

For most of 2001 the country operated under the budget of the previous president, Clinton. Bush`s first budget didn`t begin until Oct 1, 2001. That is the point at which Bush and his policies had any effect on the national debt. On October 1st, 2001 the national debt was $5.8T.

Obama took office on January 20, 2009.

For most of 2009 the country operated under the budget of the previous president, Bush. Obama`s first budget didn`t begin until Oct 1, 2009. That is the point at which Obama and his policies had any effect on the national debt. On October 1st, 2009 the national debt was $11.9T.

    $11.9T - $5.8T = $6.1T
Bush added $6.1T to the national debt.

    $16T - $11.9T = $4.1T
Obama has added $4.1T to the national debt.

    $6.1T > $4.1T

Please read below. Even 5Cats conceded that this is the only legitimate way to determine deficit responsibility. It just distorts the conversation when you can`t give numbers accurately. Obama has a lot to answer for and if he gets a second term his total addition to the debt may exceed Bush`s, but right now it doesn`t. Not even close. Please get a grip on how the numbers really work before you spout off about them.

HG: Obama signed off on all of it even before he took office. He took part in the bank bailout and it was his administration that doled out the money (to his biggest campaign donors, by the way).

He`s taking credit for bailing out those banks now, trying to claim we are better off. Since he`s taking credit for it, he should be held accountable for it`s aftermath as well.

LOL, you partisans blaming the debt on one party or another. Who should you blame? All the Americans. Every single one.

And 13 trillion is not the whole story. You have to add the bad cheques written: federal benefits, unfunded social security and medicare. Excluding other hard to quantify policy implied liabilities, the total is closer to 60.9 trillion, or $513,380 for every household in the USA.

Average family net worth in the USA fell from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010 (and certainly fell further since). Then you deduct half a million dollars per family and that`s what you`re worth.

    Close @HG: But no banana!
I said it would be IF (and only if) you sort out the spending increases of the new President from the old!
Thus when Bush passed a bill in late Sept 2001, 140 billion (iirc! it`s just an example) to fund the Afghan war, it is NOT CLINTON`S FAULT!
Thus I say: Inaguration day is the cut-off! Not election day (duh!) and not some future day where Bush spends billions and it`s counted against Clinton.
    OBVIOUSLY!

And again I point out that when YOU "did the math" you left 13 months of Obama`s spending OUT of the equation.

Republicans have no credibility. You put your party over country even when obvious lies are obvious. Your new leader is tax cheat. Yeah Mitt Romney hides his money off shore to avoid taxes and that is now a republican virtue? Your party sickens me. You are not patriotic.

The scary part about talking about this debt increase, which is inflated, due to budgets and timeframes as mentioned numerous times in this post, is that repubutards actually believe that Obama could turn the country around in 4 years and that their savior is this guy that hides his money offshore to avoid taxes.

Obama said all that AND much more! Obama said these things, NOT the RNC, ok? And of course the MSM cannot seem to recall ANY of his campaign promises...

I don`t want to be brainwashed by someone else`s opinion so no I did not watch the TV news. I will tell it was prominently featured on all three of the main news sites (CNN.com, FoxNews.com and NBCNews.com). Everyone is concerned with the national debt including "gasp" the President.

Politicians in general have no credibility. They have placed personal interests over country. Our current leader most likely lied on his college admissions in order to get illegitimate financial aid. Yes, Barack Obama likely stated that he was born in Kenya on his college admissions in order to get additional financial aid? He sickens me.

Oh please. Really that`s what concerns you? First of all you have nothing for proof. Just conjecture of someone you never voted for anyway. Why would you care about the forms he filled out to get into college and not be upset with a tax dodging, un-patriotic American? I`ll tell you why. You`re a kook. A Ron Paul loving freakazoid who can`t believe his candidate was cut from the republican convention. That simply goes to more reasons as to why republicans are the party of cheaters and liars. The next 4-1/2 years are gonna suck for you. No wait the rest of your life is gonna suck for you because libertarianism has no chance of ever winning a national election.

@madest: So let me get this straight: you can claim that Romney is "tax dodging" because you speculate that it is the reason he does not release his extended returns (despite having released the legal requirement already); however, I can`t speculate that Obama falsified his admissions since he refuses to release that information.

Ah, now I see. You`re ability to present a reasonable and fair argument continues to impress. I am confident that I speak for the entire IAB community when I state that your presence is both insightful and engaging.

It`s not speculation. You haven`t been paying attention. Mitt Romney accepted amnesty for hiding money in a Swiss UBS account and as a result Republicans are forced to pretend like that`s normal. It`s odd to me that they can hate on a welfare mom who`s gaming the system yet keep their traps shut about a billionaire who hides his money from Uncle Sam.

PS: There is no "legal" requirement. It`s simply tradition. For a guy who pretends to know so much about the government I think you should know that.

For starters, that`s a completely different subject than the 2009 amnesty we were discussing earlier.

However, I`d be glad to offer some reason to the conversation. So, you`re trying to claim that, during an election attempt, Romney tried to forego paying taxes on $1,700 worth of income?

Yes, because this seems reasonable. Mitt Romney, with an estimated net worth of $200 million, thought that evading the taxes on $1,700 was worth risking an election over. I doubt it. Seems to be more straw grasping than anything...

Must not be very good at hiding it if you know about it. Come to think of it if you know about it the IRS must as well does not seem to be a problem for them. So you are left with two options it was not tax cheating or it was and the IRS is incompetent. So you choose 1. you are wrong. 2. you support more power for a government that is so poorly run that the branch with the most latitude in enforcing rules is incompetent.

That won`t work until we can get congress to work together. Spin it all you want but President Obama had the good intentions of working with both sides to come up with the best solutions. But he was hit within his first month with reality, "Our single most important goal is to make Barack Obama a one-term president". Funny I would have thought that during a recession the single most important goal for the Republicans in congress would be jobs and the economy.

Don`t blame one man who was handed a flaming pile of poo... its the fault of every person too ignorant to figure out where the problems came from, and too lazy to stand up and do something about it.

markust: President Obama had the good intentions of working with both sides to come up with the best solutions.

    ROFLMAO

That`s the funniest poo I`ve heard in years.

"That`s the funniest poo I`ve heard in years."

You can`t see it because your head is so far up opinion media`s ass.

"Whats done is done. Blame it on Bush! Blame it on Obama! It`s happened. HOW-CAN-WE-FIX-IT?"

The only way to fix it is to get out of the mentality that only one side has all the answers. We`re going to dig deeper and deeper into the hole until the two sides in the House and the Senate are forced to work together for the common good.
Never a truer word spoken, Markust. Once Americans get over this pissing-match, orchestrated by the media, of pitching one side against the other, then America might not actually sink into the swamp. Look, it`s not about "libtards" or "Republitards". And you know who you are, on either side of the debate. You`ve been fed the party line by the media, and they control your every thought.

The longer you Americans fight amongst yourselves to achieve nothing, or veto achievements from "the other side", the further America is going under.

To take one example, the China boat has every one of its oarsmen pulling in the same direction, while we in the west are more interested in who`s fault it was. Are you looking forward or looking back.

I`m entirely with Markust on this. He`s been advocating thinking for yourself since day one, and has tried to distance himself from Partisan politics (even though every now and again, he slips into a rant, right buddy?). But Markust has a good message, which I agree with. F*ck this partisan bullcum.

Look, once you put yourself in a place where "I`m a Conservative, therefore every Liberal is fundamenatly wrong before I even hear what he/she had to say", or vice versa (just swap the words Conservative and Liberal), then you`re going to get nowhere.

My take on it? As long as America is as partisan as it is, it`s going to go under. Which would be sad. Look at the what`s better for the entire country, rather than trying to win a vote. Or an internal pissing-match, same thing.

    /end soapbox.

If people only understood true his intentions, they`d be GLAD he`s a total incompetent.

markust: Obama never had any intention of working with republicans, he completely ignored all republican pleas until after the 2010 election sent republicans into control of the house of representatives. He didn`t even have Speaker Boehner`s phone number.

So believe that lie if you want, the rest of us know better.

LOL Europeans and Canuckastanians should take at look at their own governments sometimes. You just described the political process.

"Try solving the problems of THIS world" - Dead Fingers Talk (Sweet Love City)

Storm The Reality Studios - NSFW! They cuss a lot! But the message is clear: Some people want to DRAT you up! Some people? they just wanna DRAT!

It would be nice to have "real political choice" but that`s NOT the reality of 2012: y`all have to deal with what you have in front of you.

Every political system has it`s good and bad points, there is no "easy solution"...

Thanks for the props davymid. Yes, every once in a while I do slip into a rant but for the most part I make a concentrated effort not to be partisan.

None of this is Obama`s fault. Just ask him or any liberal.

    And my question remains:

Honestly, did ANY of the MSM networks cover this? Even Fox? I honestly have no idea.

I`m betting... nope! It hurts Obama too much.
