@McGovern: Joke around all you want, it still doesn`t change the fact that whatever your country is doing is clearly not working and needs to be changed. Norway has a tenth the incarceration rate as the US (per 100,000) so instead of mocking perhaps you should take notes. Yes, the US and Norway face very different policing challenges, but incarceration is a huge problem in the US and if those prisons actually rehabilitated people then it wouldn`t be so bad, but...

Gee you guyz is right we should give killer a 20 year sentence in a hotel suite like Norwayz!! What could go wrong! Oh wait mabey we should drop all our gangbangers in Germany and see what happens instead Europe being so perfect I`m sure they can fix it....

@creamk: I recently watched a documentary on the prison "business" in the U.S. One guy got it, he said (regarding how to deal with criminals): If the only tool in your belt is a hammer then every problem looks like a nail. In the U.S. the only tool they have is incarceration so the solution to every problem looks like incarceration.

We have learned a lot from the USA (really, we have and are grateful). Isn`t it time USA starts learning from others?

And how did you get those gangs in the first place? Was it.. wait for it... inequality?

What country jails the most people? The answer never has been longer jail sentences but rehabilitation. The more i see and hear about US values, the more it comes to one thing: me me me. Criminal: shoot them. Sick: let them die. Poor: it`s their own fault their poor, make money instead. Giving a fair chance to all citizens: not in a million years. Second chance: no, absolutely no.

This has Ayn Rand written all over it, it has failed big time and worse: it has ingrained a whole generation or two into completely skewed values.

We are altruistic animals, we tend to help without gaining from it. It`s in our nature, blocking it will lead to a sick society. Fear of anything and everything around just because (you think) everyone else is as selfish as you and will kill to get what they want.

@McGovern: Per capita is also a simple concept, but none of you were saying anything about the amount of guns or bullets, crime or violence, only population. Those other things are separate arguments that may correlate with population in your case but are by no means causal.

@patchgrabber

More people, more guns, more bullets, more gangs, more crime, more violenece it`s a pretty simple concept.

@kja1995, @mcgovern, @crakr: What the hell does population have to do with anything? So Germany has about a fifth of your population. They have much less than a fifth of the amount of bullets fired by police. Seriously I`m not defending Germany or deriding you guys but that argument is nonsense.
Evil_Eye: I`ve seen European news, it`s most the boring damn sh|t ever, it`s like listening to someone read the dictionary in monotone voices. You could use it to lull babies to sleep.

Sorry but your European type of newscasts just wouldn`t make it here. They show part of them on PBS stations here and they have lower ratings than a color test pattern.
Wow, Crakr is defending his country`s BS "news"? Here`s a tidbit of information for you CJ, news is SUPPOSED to be boring. Why do you need to be entertained by news? News is supposed to inform, not entertain. Look at all the really good, well-respected news agencies out there like the BBC and they all have one thing in common: they`re BORING. Wanting entertaining news with opinions just shows that you are a mindless sheep that needs keys jingled in front of him every 5 minutes so you don`t go staring at a butterfly or something.

Crakrjak and oldollie have a hard time to justify all this... The reason people get shot by police in USA is because everyone knows they get shot, they arm them selves, ready to shoot back. They also know that once caught, they`ll go to jail for ridiculous lengths, basically destroying their future completely andwhen released, they have nothing, no jobs, no social security, no healthcare and most likely have to go right back in... When cornered like that, i would start shooting back. It`s desperation.

Equality promotes health, safety and most importantly: happiness. I haven`t heard happiness being any kind of value, it`s secondary and comes from wealth, nothing else can make you happy. It`s money. Or more likely, money that others don`t have, that equals happiness in US? Because the more i see, the more this comes forward: you need to be better than your neighbor, richer, more cars, more status, the more they envy, the more happiness you`ll receive.

Why do you fear eq

hmm, more violent related deaths in the US compared to Europe. More poverty in the US compared to Europe. Healthcare is a lot more expensive in the US then it is in Europe. Military spending in the US seems more important then scholing.
But as soon aw people suggest that socialism may be a better way to go then capitalism, that person must be an idiot.. just to end this though, most goverments in europe are socialistic. its more then a political ideal is a mind set. it boils down to `together we are responcible for eachother` it most simple of terms.
And i am sure someone will post how corruption is part of socialism.. It isnt though, its part of any system made by humans, including socialism, but also including capitalism.

We are sorry to disappoint you. It`s just that we can`t get enough people to conduct mass murders every week.

This was a routine burglary report,
just sent two bobbies to have a looksee
it was a trap by some arsehole who said he wanted to be a legend by killing cops, who shot them and threw a grenade to finish them off. The guy who did it had a £50,00 reward on his head, but the locals were too scared to grass him up.Oddly enough he was on bail???

Considering America has 9 times the population of Germany, Ultra-violent drug cartels along the southern border, gangs, meth, crack and illegal aliens.

@Andrew155: Fox News is a example. That is why I said "like" Fox News.

I have been to America a few times and I always noticed that the news there is a lot different from other countries I been to. It is hard to explain... it felt more like a TV show and less like the news.

The music, the choice of news, the key words they keep throwing in, the very opinionated views... A lot of people rely on the news to know what is going on, so having it try to tell me what I must feel rather then just give the facts and let me pick is weird. Like I said, hard to explain it.

Well anyway, if where I get my world views keeps pushing me to be scared of everything, then I would freek out over little things just because I heard on the news something bad happened in the situation I would be in... so the police would think of all the gun crimes and hold that trigger till it clicks empty.

Wow! This ALMOST makes up for the 5 billion bullets they fired from 1939 to 1945.

im not from germany, but i think the police there have to go through tons of investigations for every shot they fire and often have to face court if anything didnt go down according to the strict rules. also far less ppl have guns, so the need for self-protection may not be so imminent. but, yeah, us police seems very trigger happy.

Evil Eye - weirdest post I`ve ever read. All of these problems are caused by Fox News. Don`t make me defend Fox News, because I won`t. However, that is a deranged and borderline-psycho claim. There isn`t even any logical continuity to it.

Swing and a miss.

Drugs being illegal doesn`t mean there is a discernible war on them. We have an exceptional case, we declared war on drugs. Operation Too Fast Too Furious - this is the kind of thing we do in the drug war. We invade Panama. We get involved in Colombia. Our incarceration rates skyrocket as soon as we declared the war a few decades ago. Don`t compare our drug policy to that of Germany, they couldn`t be more different. I lived in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a year, I`m not stranger to Germany.

This story should read:

German Citizens not total dicks to police officers and actually listen to their commands, this results in less civilian shottings

Cultural history and media. Media is the issue that needs fixing.

Settlers in America wanted an Eden for themselves and when other people had the same idea they got possessive to hold onto that dream. This led to paranoia and selfishness being drilled into the culture, during a time where the world was already filled with this.
At some point some entrepreneur relised that fear sells really well, so they spread fear in media to increase sales in security/guns/papers/ect... plus as a bonus it kepted people in order at the time.

Skip to now and lots of contries banned fear/hate mongering in public media, because they noticed it was causing social problems. However America didn`t because of "Freedom of Speech", so the fear/hate that you still see on networks like Fox is still implanting it into the cultural subconscious, so it can make more money.

That is my guess.

But maybe its because our Cops have at least 3 years of training on their job.

We have a drug war because we have a lot of idiots running federal and state agencies that can`t see that the war is what raises the cost of drugs and thus raises the profits for the dealers thus creating deadly competition for those profits.

I don`t see anybody getting killed over the purchase and distribution of beer.

Serious question here, Andrew155- Why do we have a drug war? Are they legal in other countries (mainly Germany since we are comparing them to us)?

I know most people try to pick fights on here, but it`s an honest question

Something that is probably a unique US thing is Suicide by Police. That happens here in the US more than you`d think. Someone wants to end it, so they pull a gun on cops, and force the cops to kill them.

Old fact. This may surprise people, but different countries have different problems and police have to adjust to confront those different problems. We have a drug war. That accounts for the greater portion of the excess violence.

Anyways, I found the story below interesting. I find it strange that a country would send unarmed female police officers to investigate a burglary.
