I`m pretty sure Pexe that double trouble wasn`t used to create cochlear implants actually it was an Australian Scientist who created the first cochlear implants and then commercialized it from there. annnnd I`m pretty sure he didn`t use meaningless tests like the ones run on double trouble. because obviously Australian Scientists are smarter. :D (And realize that using animals in trials only gets you a 25% chance that it will work in humans because of the huge differences in body chemistry and such)

I agree with you Crakrjak I`ve seen what PETA does with their "rehomed pets" speaking with a few people in regards to PETA it seems most believe in this weird animals are for the wild bullpoop. Dogs have been domesticated for over 1000 years now originally working as wolves with humans as they saw the benefit of working together as both humans and dogs are opportunistic hunters. PETA believes dogs should literally be put back into their "natural" habitat... (which for my dog is the lounge.) There is somethings I agree with that PETA does and many I don`t agree with, sadly this is what happens with groups such as PETA

Though this is horrible, animal testing has made huge strides for the benefit of humans.
What is one 15 year life compared to millions of 70+ year lives?

Animal Testing is actually less accurate and really it doesn`t do much to help. Take the story of morphine. When it was first created they tested it on cats. Now think about what morphine does to you? what does it do to cats you ask? they go insane they literally tear the place up. Soooo how then does that help humans? is Morphine one of the most widely used drugs to help with pain relief? There are so many studies done on animals where years later they go back and re-test and realize everything they learnt from testing on animals was WRONG! Read up on vivisection and animal testing. Its not required these days at all. Question for you, if it was a human they were doing this test on how would you feel about it? But it will save millions of dogs but it will be excruciating pain for the human with only a 25% chance of being transferable to the dogs? oh and if people are interested about PETA - http://www.petakillsanima

I read a debate transcript where the anti animal testing guy brought up an experiment where someone took the eyes out of a dog and put them unto a cat and vice versa. The pro guy started to talk about organ transplants in humans and what maybe could be learned from such an experiment. The anti guy told him that me made the whole thing up, he just wanted to see if the pro side would defend anything. It sounds like a bad joke, but as you can see below, it was a safe bet.

Falsified PETA propoganda, indeed. As a senior biology student myself, I can tell you that third-party ethics committees and review boards have to approve each and every thing done to any mammal. Persistent, gaping wounds and insufficient anesthesia would bring the hammer down on their program in an instant.

This case proves that it is time for humans to exit the planet. If you are willing to torture a superior creature like a cat you really have an inflated sense of importance. Live around cats for while and you will understand.

Cats are far more eco-friendly apex predators. I hope all of those bastards die from something just as awful as the pain they have inflicted. Cancer would be a good choice. I am not unsympathetic to the needs of the scientific community, but the document in the story shows that they did this to insure a flow of grant money, not to make any great medical breakthoughs.

I`m glad the research I do at my uni will minimize the need for these sorts of things. Biological systems modeling is a great field and attempts to minimize the need for animal and human experiments by approximate the answers you`ll get before the experiment. Then the model, once calibrated, stands in for the experiment.

@mentott510, you can choose to either defend all animals or none of them in experimenting. It`s really pretentious to say one animal deserves to live more than another.

If its not such a big deal, then why don`t some of you idiots that say, it was just a cat, apply to be experimented on.
It won`t hurt. But just in case it does we`ll stick you in a sleeping bag and tie it shut snuggly around your neck so you can`t move or react to the torture.
Sounds like a great way to get rid of some of the human parasites we have sucking the life out of humanity...you are using up oxygen that should be saved for the better good, so would you just die already ...as we have no more use for you. Actually we never had a real use for you, we lied about that, just so we could continue to get funding, torturing you made it look like we were busy doing something but not actually nothing

Yes, what they did was terrible and with no reasonable (or actual) advances in medical science it was a total disgusting waste of life, pain, and sadness for nothing. So please, help fund PETA who will tirelessly euthanize these animals without even trying to find them a home to keep them from the millions of nasty old humans who simply want a companion. They are so concerned they even have unlicensed volunteers euthanize animals in vans on the go before dumping their bodies in dumpsters so kindly saving them from lives with humans. And don`t forget that PETA will use your generous donations to indirectly fund terrorist organizations such as the ALF who have burned down entire science wings at Unis. Lastly, don`t forget PETAS end goal, the complete liberation of animals from humans including eating meat or having companion pets. A wonderful organization for sure! With the largest financial baking for animal rights and welfare PETA adopts only about 6% back into homes and kills the rest

Look up Ingred Newkirk and her goals before touting PETAs work as extreme but necessary, there are plenty of non-psychotic organizations who care about the animals, fight for their freedom from these tortures, but don`t have a shady hidden agenda involving murdering all domesticated animals and ensuring no more are made to be domesticated ever. Try the SPCA for starters.

In 7 years in Norfolk, their hq Peta has killed 80% of animals left in its care while the local SPCA adopted 76%, nearly as many as PETA killed. Plus SPCA didn`t euthanize theirs in a black paneless van by non-professional volunteers and dump the corpses into local dumpsters. Really, look it up people. PETA is a terrorist organization with horrendous objectives.

I used to think of PETA as a valid organization, like the SPCA, or the WWF. Then I learned some facts, like those PinkRhoid mentioned. PETA makes money, and they lie, distort facts, and use out-of-context statements to tell half the story. PETA do not practice what they preach.

Sure the motivations behind this experiment may have been less than stellar, but this is one example, one.

Gerry said it best, imho. Animal testing is a sad and unfortunate reality. The lives that have been saved, the illnesses cured and pain relieved due to medical procedures and drugs who`s development were only possible through animal testing are almost countless. There is not a single person on this thread who has not benefited from the results of animal testing.

Animal testing should only be used in cases where important and usable data may be acquired. An animals life does have value. Not equal to human life, but value none the less. Poor kitty.
I would be ok with testing on human criminals in exchange for some time off their sentence. Unless we are talking pedos, no time off for them. I see more value in a cats life over a pedophiles.

In almost all cases, human lives are more valuable than cats. I would let a thousand cats die before allowing one human to die, but that`s just me.
Don`t get me wrong, I like cats well enough(though they make your house smell gross), but a human with responsibilities and a family has more to offer the world than one little orange tabby kitty.

As was mentioned before there are computer simulation programs that have been developed for research to avoid this type of cruel practice. Also, I work as a counselor in a state correctional institution and am currently assigned to the sexual offender treatment program there. While nobody likes someone who commits a sexual crime, few sexual offenders re-offend after treatment.

We use the treatment program developed by Dr.Julie Medlin. It is two years in length. Google sex offender recovery rates and you will find some pretty good studies. A lot depends on the individual offender.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. How would this have *ever* passed ethics approval? One of my favourite things of working with algae and higher plants is that I never have to worry about ethics approval. Those panels are a nightmare to get by, and I for the life of me have no idea how this would get a stamp of approval from such a board.

Knowledge about how animal physiology works has to be gained through experimentation and cannot be divined with tea leaves. Also - Where do people imagine all the products they use come from? Products that many people need/want have to be developed and tested. Animals are generally used when there is any slight chance that this development/testing could be harmful or unpleasant. Furthermore - why are cats considered so much more deserving of sympathy than e.g. rats or mice?
I personally like animals more than people but I do see the pragmatic reasons why animal experimentation takes place in most cases.

Try to imagine your life without anything that was developed with help from medical experiments such as these. Many more human live would have been lost without the major advancements in medicine derived from these experiments.
