After such an utterly boring, pretentious, and failed attempt at creating an opening ceremony that topped the Chinese; I`m sure bronze would be a welcome high.

The context for being upset all depends on what you expect, or what you went into the Olympics for. Many are expecting a top spot, anything less is disappointing, some want a medal, and some want to simply be there.

Let`s be fair, being third in the entire world, is no mean feat. Put it another way, I believe there are around 1700 players in the NFL - Most sport loving kids in the USA I would assume would love to be a pro-footballer,or sportsplayer. Even in the lower echelons, the standard is extremely high. Most kids, will never reach that standard. Although, naturally as mentioned above, it all depends the reason you go into the Olympics.

"No, it`s called being a sore looser. Crying about it is called being a bitch."

After four years of hard work I reckon its fair enough to be a bit emotional about missing the top spot. Its not like he just rolled up that afternoon and had a crack at it.

Anyway - we can let the trolling was on past - it was a good games. London and Team GB did an excellent job.

Where is the evidence that the Chinese are going to get crap when they get back. Seems a little bit of an ignorant generalisation to me.

They`re crying because they know they`re going to be whipped even harder when they get back.

The whole picture is taken out of context. Tom Daley was really chuffed with his bronze for a number of reasons, not least because his heat earlier on in the day didn`t indicate a medal was going to happen.

Furthermore, re the Britain losing the States aspect, it`s not something that Britons care about. You`ll probably find that most people these days are slightly ashamed of our colonial history.

Not being happy with second best would be seen as a positive trait if this diver wasn`t from China.

"Well in team sports, you get silver by losing your last game."

Wasn`t a team sport, this was individual and points based.

Well in team sports, you get silver by losing your last game. You get bronze by winning your last game. For one it`s a sad consolation prize, for the other it was win or go home empty handed.

Plus those kids are gonna get beat for losing.

One of these teams will get a parade, the other will get marched off to a "camp". Can you guess which is which?

Great Britain (and any other free country): "Yay, I just won an Olympic medal!"

China: "Only silver? Great, now I won`t get to eat for a month and half my family will be sent to death camps or worse."

Amazing that such a truly evil empire even gets to compete in the Olympics.

@Drawman - I do hope you are just trolling. The only reason I can see for any Brit being perceived as a loser is encapsulated perfectly in your miserable account of us all! `This is why we in Britain are perennial losers.` Speak for yourself mate, not for the rest.

This is a common theme in the olympics regardless of nationality, and has been the subject of study.

In the case of feeling distraught over a silver medal, it`s basically attributed to being the closest you can get to winning a gold and not getting it, and in the case of winning a bronze, you`re thrilled because it`s the closest you can get to not winning a medal at all, but getting one. You can read about the study here conducted after the 92 olympics:

APA Counterfactual thinking and satisfaction among Olympic medalists.

The diver who won bronze has had a very difficult year, losing his father and then being abused by twitter trolls for not winning the synchronized dive. I`m sure winning ANY kind of medal was a very great honor for him. Do your research IAB

Why must this be about race? It`s about an individual`s expectations. Would Bolt have celebrated bronze? No. Here are two British rowers, Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase, who were visibly distraught at winning SILVER, because they were expected to get a gold. They were crying and apologised for `letting everyone down.` Stop making silly, sweeping, racial generalisations people.

I wouldn`t necessarily go as far as brain washing but, as for as N. Korea is concerned, the losers are forced into hard labor because they`re supposed to be superior and anything else is a shame to the nation, don`t know about China being THAT bad but I can definitely see using shame and discomfort as a big motivator.

All of you moaning that they have it hard in China... if you felt that way go ahead and let them all win gold like some spoilt child. Oh wait, you got the most golds didn`t you?

In life you win and you lose. China needs to learn to get over itself. I am happy with our 3rd place and proud as can be!

There is a story behind this, which people from the UK will know about. The boy who came 3rd did it all for his father who passed away, he was harassed by twitter trolls taking the piss out of him and everything saying he wouldn`t even make the final.

So all things considered, you can understand the celebrations for bronze.

Tears are an expression of emotion.
Gold = tears
Silver = tears
Bronze = tears
To be so close to being the best in the world is a truly emotional experience that very few of us will attain; thus those of us not in that position are not qualified to judge or pass opinion on those who are.

It is based on the individual. I would be disappointed in myself if I knew I could have scored better than what gold did. Also I would be super excited if I had the best effort ever and that won me only bronze.

Qui Bo is the current world champion in 2 seperate diving heights. Additionally, in 2011 world diving series he got 25 perfect 10s. He was crowned Male Diver of the Year by FINA at the end of 2011. It was heavily expected that he would get gold.

Plus it was his to win. It wasn`t that he was surpassed by a better diver, he faltered in his own dives.

I`d be pissed off..

Chinese athletes have been brainwashed for years in concentration camps to strive only for gold. Getting silver is having their entire life`s purpose slip away.

Don`t make fun of the Chinese athletes, they live in a fascist state and their future is bleak if they don`t please their superiors.

The British - well they`re going to continue to live like everything is awesome until everyone realizes there isn`t enough money to live like we`ve been living. Then, game over.

Pity them both.

The chinese guy is sad because Gold medal winners get a massive state pension for life. Silver medalists get nothing.

Whereas Tom can enjoy his silver we don`t work our athletes in a training (concentration) camp 24/7 from 8yrs old and demand gold or drat you and die in a gutter.
