Isn`t it supposed to be amateurs at the Olympics? They shouldn`t be paid anything. It`s just a collection of sports too boring to watch on their own. And the ones that are interesting have professional events also. Soccer (Football), Basketball etc.
    Play a real sport!

Valuing athletics more than academics is one of the human races biggest mistakes.

The whole amateur ideal sounds great but in fact was never really a thing. The original Olympians regularly were rewarded by theor cities very generously.

The amateur ideal was a Victorian invention, which wa when `sport` in the modern sense was invented. One of the first popular team sports was rowing, we`re still prety good at it, but the toffs who were rowing in competetive races were no match for profresional Thames Watermen. They couldn`t be beaten by oiks, so they started making rules which meant only the leisured could compete at the highest levels.

In this century some countries made a bit of an effort to at leas pay lip service to amateurism, although the only real amateurs in this period were the odd talented outsider. Mostly there were scholarships or, in eastern Europe & China, military positions which consisted entirely of training.

I`m not sure why GB athletes got nothing, but I`m sure the sponsorship will see them right.

I heard recently that America is one of very few countries who tax the payout. I would have liked to have seen that explored in this graphic.
