I felt really bad for her. I`m totally appreciative to his position on the matter, I`m wholeheartedly pleased to know that he supports the LGBT movement in America but it`s not right for him to heckle her at her workplace when it seems like it is so hard to find work in that country right now. It`s not her opinion on the matter, it`s some corporate douchebags. If you don`t like what they do, find more meaningful ways to support your cause. Go donate money to love, instead. I thought she handled herself really well.

Haha. The lesson to be learned here is, keep your mug the frak off the internet. I doubt a second goes by where someone isn`t a complete douche to someone else based off the actions of their employer/school/country/family. Pretty much none of those things we get a huge amount of choice in, yet people like being dicks for no reason. Difference is, most are smart enough not to immortalize it for all time.

Unless you`re female, and unless it`s you being sexy, anonymity is the way to go.

While it`s illegal for the Government to do things based on free speech, it`s entirely LEGAL to fire your employees for excercising it.
For example: your salesman goes around telling people that your company`s products suck? FIRE his arse!

By this logic, the people in north korea have the freedom to speak badly about their dictator. Though, the consequence would be death, they still have the freedom to do so.

My point is, `freedom` is a grand illusion. It does not truly exist for most people.

Rather than punishment, I`d like to see a reward. Don`t get me wrong, the reward should go to the girl who handled that asshat decently(a bonus? raise? promotion even?). He got punished enough in his own stupidity by publishing the video. Firing him was...well, a little bit over the top if you ask me.

So the employer doesn`t like what the employee does legally on his personal time? What a lucky bastard! He just won the lawsuit lottery. They had no right to fire him. They violate his right to free expression & freedom of speach. If he had done it on company time I could see their point, but on his lunch break {his own time}...he is gonna get a HUGE settlement.

Why can`t I get an employer to treat me that stupidly bad? DAYUM!

sorry gerry. but the company is withinits rights.

In pennsylvania state workers can be fired for making statements endorsing political candidates. even if this is done on their own time. Essentially any statement you make in a public forum, such as this guy did, puts the company you work for under liability for the statements. This is especially true for chief executives.

I’m only a few sentences into the article so far, but he says, “I’m a nice guy, by the way … totally heterosexual,” he continues. “Not a gay in me, I just can’t stand the hate.” HAH!! And I –never- use two exclamation marks at once!! Remember how I told you all about my “gay lip” theory? Just look at this guy. If he’s not gay, he’s at least curious/tried some things in the past, I guarantee it.

inversegrav, I believe that`s only true if they do so in company garb, at a company function, or in some way that associated them with the company. In other words, if his YouTube channel was titled XYZ Company CFO, then, sure. But, if he was just acting as Joe Dumbass, Private Citizen (and I say that because, give me a break, that minimum wage drive through worker doesn`t need him to be giving her poo, even "nice guy" poo), I don`t see how they have grounds? I`m not arguing with you, it`s just that, just like with the military, you can protest, etc., out of uniform and without saying, "I`m Corporal Protester, USMC", but you can do it in civilian clothes and "Mr. Protester, Concerned Citizen."

    @lilliandulci:
Unfortunately many people don`t quite understand what freedom of speech means.
It does not mean you can say anything you want to anyone, it means you can speak out against the government without fear of being jailed or tortured. This was not freedom of speech, this was douchebaggery at its finest.
As far as the chick-fil-a president goes, that also would not be filed under freedom of speech, it would be freedom of religion, to express your beliefs without fear of being harassed or berated.Something most people don`t understand either.

monsterzero, my point was, all these people say that the Chick Fil A CEO giving his personal opinion and using the company`s money to donate to anti-gay causes is freedom of speech, so they go and support him because it`s "freedom of speech". By that logic, whether or not they`re fine with this guy getting fired, they should also be supporting his right to freedom of speech, organizing a day to go support him, things like that.

    What`s the difference?

One was a CEO representing his company publicly and giving a hateful opinion that hurts a large group of people and also using the company`s money to further harm that large group of people.

The other was a CFO who wasn`t in his uniform and wasn`t representing his company, who went out on his own free time and made a video for his own youtube channel where he expressed his opinion (to the wrong person, in a way he definitely shouldn`t have) which hurts pretty much no-one using his freedom of speech.

Why does the 1st one warrant support but the 2nd one doesn`t? The 2nd is a better example of freedom of speech than the first since he wasn`t representing his company and his speech only harmed himself since he got fired.

    @LillianDulci: Are you suggesting:
#1 That NO CEO or Company be allowed to donate money to a cause YOU disagree with?
#2 That GOVERNMENT Officials and agencies should LEGALLY discriminate against political positions they dislike?
#3 That groups which have broken NO LAWS suffer punishment (from the government) and sanctions (from the public) for expressing AN OPINION?
#4 That an employee that brings shame and disgrace to his company suffer NO consequences, so long as it`s "PC"?

Zeig Heil my lefty Furher! Seriosly, you don`t want the Gov`t to even discuss religion BUT Gov`t enforcing economic punishments FOR religion is A-OK with you?

The 1st opinion was directed at an idea. It isn`t hateful to love ones own ideals and express them. How others take it is their problem.
The second opinion was directed at an innocent person and had very hateful undertones.
Both corporations in this story have done nothing wrong. Disagreeable, maybe, but not wrong.

LillianDulci, I see your point. If the positions had been reversed then there would be many people screaming "first amendment" who are saying they had a right to fire him in this case. But some people are just hypocrites, what can you do.

I don`t think that`s the point. This isn`t really a freedom of speech issue. I can guarantee you there is a clause in his contract that allows the company to let him go if he represents the company poorly, and even you seem to agree he was acting poorly. It would be the same as if pulled a Tracy Morgan and went on tv (as an individual not for the company) acting crazy and talking about impregnating women. He can say it but that doesn`t mean there aren`t consequences.

cont: He is always representing the company he works for because investors, stock holders, consumers and whoever else potentially know who he works for. People are at least smart enough to know that someone who bullies a drive thru clerk(who in no way is responsible for the controversy) and stupid enough to post it online is probably not level-headed enough to be making big decisions.

I do want to point out that I am strongly for same sex marriage rights. I just think there is a point where common sense comes in to play and that includes not overstepping the reach of the first amendment (or redefining what it really means). That is a very slippery slope.

tstyblucryns, you`re acting as if I`m arguing that this guy shouldn`t have been fired. I totally understand firing someone who makes your company look bad. It`s bad for business. My point is simply that, if all those people went to CFA because of "freedom of speech" rather than being anti-gay, like they continue to claim, then it only makes sense that they`d be defending this guy for his freedom of speech too. But they aren`t. I know you understood this point but I wanted to reiterate it because you`re adding meaning to my words further than what I actually said and meant.

I`m not even going to bother responding to 5cats who did just that but took it to the extreme, like he always does.

@LillianDulci: I`ll make it as simple as possible:
The Government takes action against your 1st Amendment rights = Illegal (Upheld by several US courts)
A Citizen (Or a Company) takes action? = Legal.

That`s ALL there is to it. No need to drag "religion" OR "gay rights" into it: THAT is only an attempt to "muddy the water" and hide the true issue: Some US City Mayors vowed to use their powers to block CFA from LEGALLY setting up business.

THAT (I keep repeating) is against the law!

LillianDulci-"Where`s all the conservative Christians supporting his freedom of speech"

Please learn the Bill of Rights. The VERY FIRST words of the VERY FIRST AMENDMENT state: "Congress shall make no law.." Says nothing about Chick-fil-a. Seeing as this asswipe was not arrested, his enjoyed his freedom of speech. (the 1st Amendment says nothing about you not being able to lose your job).

    LillianDulci-"What`s the difference?"

The difference is that one was the CEO of a company giving his personal opinion to a question, the reply of which was entirely in line with the stance of the owner and board of the company. While the other was a belligerent asswipe (not the CEO of his company) harrassing and intimidating a young woman and posting the evidence proudly and pounding his chest and saying `Look what I did`.

While the Chick-fil-a organization was proud of their CEO`s statement, do you really expect Vanti to say `Yes, we support harrassing young women`?

Both enjoyed their 1st Amendment rights. Both faced the consequences.

The difference? One was intelligent, one was an idiot.

Does he refuse to hire homosexuals? No.

Does he refuse to serve homosexuals? No.

All you know is what he said, that he `supports the traditional family`. Did I miss the part where he said, `And I will hunt down and kill all those evil homo people.`?

Had he said, "My favorite color is Red" would you be yelling `HE HATES THE COLOR CYAN`?

Dan Cathy is not the LBGT movement`s biggist problem. I think this experience has shown that the LBGT`s biggest problem is the idiots they have in charge.

MeGrendel, I guess you did miss it. The thing is, we`ve seen this before. We know the tactics.

    "supportive of the family"
    "biblical definition"
    "family unit"
    "biblical principles"

Those are the phrases that Dan Cathy used and they are the code phrases used when they mean "abomination". Ask someone who lived through Women`s Suffrage if they heard similar phrases, or an African Americans who lived through the civil rights movement.

"we love and respect anyone who disagrees"
That quote sounds an awful lot like, "some of my best friends are black"

In a time when LGBTs are fighting for their rights, Dan Cathy publicly declares which side he is on and uses the loaded language of the bigots.

Dan Cathy picked a side in this fight and he armed himself with the weapons used by the other bigots, that makes him a bigot in my book.

Oh, and one more point about why those phrases are bullpoo wrapped up to look pretty:

"supportive of the family" and "family unit"
    Gays don`t have families?

    "biblical definition"
Oxymoron if ever I`ve heard one. There are as many different interpretations of the Bible as there are people who have read it. Dan Cathy chose the interpretation that is used to deny people their rights.

    "biblical principles"
I wonder which principles those are. Does he mean the homosexuality in the Bible? Or maybe the murder, rape, genocide, infanticide, yada, yada, yada? If he means the peace and love parts, then why is he choosing a position that denies love?

NottaSpy-"Those are the phrases that Dan Cathy used and they are the code phrases"

One constant about the losing side. Whenever they can`t get pissed about the truth they start claiming the other size using `CODE WORDS`.

OH MY GAWD, HE SAID HE HATES THE BLACK EYED PEAS! THAT`S CODE WORD FOR HE HATES BLACK PEOPLE!

Those are not `code words`. Those are his opinion, and he has the right to have him.

Don`t like it? Don`t eat at his establishment. Your boycott and your `outrage` turned out to be poo.

What next? If a Chick-Fil-A is located on a One-Way-Street are you going to blast him about being against bisexuals?

Do you realize just how stupid you and the LGBT people look in this. By pushing this as they have, they`ve demonstrated their lunacy and harmed their image and their cause more than any bigot could.

In a time when LGBTs are fighting for their rights
Oooo! I`d better look that "code phrase" up in my trusty:
"SUPER SECRET UBER-RIGHT WING CODE PHRASE BOOKLET"
Ah: It means "I am changing the subject"

MeGrendle, How is it you read so much into my words and so little into Dan Cathy`s?

I`m not boycotting and I am not outraged. I am simply saddened and disappointed that people act like Mr. Cathy, Adam Smith, and you.

I think LGBT should have the right to marry because it is the right thing. ALL THE CAPITAL LETTERS and nonsensical analogies in your posts have wiped out any nugget of a persuasive argument.

Truth is, Dan Cathy is a bigot and you and I are both trolls.

NottaSpy-"How is it you read so much into my words and so little into Dan Cathy`s?"

Because Cathy was honestly answering a question put to him, nothing more. While you are trying to crucify the man for his opinion and, because his actual statement does not rise to the level of bigotry, you attempt (badly) to say `he`s using `code` words.` (and in this case, YOU`RE using the code word `Bigot` for `anyone who disagrees with me`.)

NottaSpy-"I am simply saddened and disappointed that people act like Mr. Cathy, Adam Smith, and you."

Yes, I`m sure your are saddened when people point out your hypocrisy and aslo point out when your argument is making you look like an idjit.
