I don`t think this is a 1st amendment issue, it`s a city zoning issue at the most.

Some towns have banned Wall Marts because they don`t want them to knock out all the small mom & pop businesses. This is much the same thing.

If the people`s elected representatives don`t want a certain business operating in their town because they find them objectionable, that`s their prerogative. If the people don`t like it, they can always vote them out.

And another thing, Chik is a restaurant, not a church. People go there to eat, not to pray, so it`s not on the same level as say... banning a mosque in Tenn. That`s just ridiculous.

OK, the business permit thing is seriously iffy. I was thinking more of the boycott/celebration thing. I could be wrong, from that aspect.

"Per First Amendment expert Eugene Volokh, denying the company a building permit because of its managers’ political or religious views is grossly unconstitutional."

Several Mayors have done this, in Chicago, DC, San Fran, and Boston. Free Speech violation!

@LordJim: It IS TOO censorship when Government officials (like Mayors for example) vow to use their powers to violate YOUR freedom to express an opinion.

That is expressly illegal btw, not a matter of opinion.

Also, LordJim:

It is a free speech issue.

The issue is, Liberal get to speak freely, but when a conservative speaks, he is not free to do so. Is that about right?

You are not American, so I don`t expect you to know the basic tenet of our constitution, or understand it.

"There is not a free speech isssue."

Really? It`s issue first of all. Secondly....

A business license denied due to a person opinion? That is free speech in a nutshell.

It isn`t about free speech. It isn`t. This point can`t be made enough. There is not a free speech isssue.

You speak freely, you piss some people off, they decicide not to do business with you. Others decide to flock to your business. That is not censorship.

I feel sad for the people in this nation. They let the media explode petty arguments so that they take front and centre stage, when it`s likely just a diversion. No doubt, when they look away from the diversion they`ll notice something is different, but not know what. That`s what the pigs did to the the animals in the animal farm.

"Aj, we both know this isn`t about free speech. lol."

That`s exactly what it was about.

Many, many people interviewed in the lines at Chick-Fil-A voiced that they did not agree with Cathy, but supported his right to have his own opinion.

Nah 5cats, I want a place where bronze age bigotry has no say in the governance of the populous.

You let your freak flags fly baby, it does more grievous harm to your own position than anything I and the vast left wing conspiracy could ever do by ourselves. ;-)

If it were some other type of CEO, such as an Anti-American Islamic Extremest who pumped millions of dollars to lobby against Christian rights, so many fat, slobbering old white people wouldn`t have shown up to stuff their faces with chicken to support free speech.

What @QueenZira wants America to be:

Obviously.

"a place where gay people stayed in their closets (or else) and the rest of the "lower orders" knew their place."

Is that what you really think?

Most conservatives, including myself, want equality for all.

Reminds me of that last scene from "The Deer Hunter", (old reference FTW) you know the one where Deniro and the rest are singing in a beer drenched sorrow sodden bar reflecting on what Vietnam has taken from every one of them. It`s like that.

These people yen for an America that doesn`t exist anymore, a place where gay people stayed in their closets (or else) and the rest of the "lower orders" knew their place. I feel no antipathy for them, just pity. One wonders how they`ll cope with the future.

Gerry I`m not the one with the problem. I`ve got no problem with you or anybody else being gay. And I`m not telling anybody to shut up. I just find the hateful comments from the left appalling. Like your dumb ass comments about my wife. Typical of somebody with no class. Yesterday wasn`t about being anti-gay it was about a show of support for a chicken joint.

Anti Gay? Yesterday had nothing to do with "anti gay".

Free Speech for the win.

Or is it, free speech, unless it isn`t the speech of a liberal?

DromEd,
"I just have to love the tolerance of the gays and their supporters. A single man has an opinion you don`t like so you`re ready to toss and entire franchise and anybody who eats there under the bus."
They have every right to their opinion. But Freedom of Speach goes both ways. I have the right to disagree and not give his business money. As for those who only went there to show support of that opinion, well I disagree with them also.

This is not intolerance, they have a right to do that. I think YOUR intolerance is showing if you think anyone who disagrees with someone has to just shut up about it. I assume this is your wife`s training. Easier to shut up than argue with her...amIright?
"I didn`t hear anybody say anything about being gay"
It was National Chic-fil-A appreciation day. Preachers all over the country encouraged their kind hearted flock to show support by eating at a place that hates fags. This is how they emulate their kind, loving god.

What would Jesus do? He`d supersize those waffle-fries!

My mother-in-law joined her blue-haired church cronies and went to Chic-fil-A yeasterday. They had to wait 2 hours to get a sammich `cause it was so busy.

Needless to say this did not sit well with us.
But I have to admit, I miss their Waffle-Fries...delicious!
