british colony now called canada. fought and won the war. as far as not worth keeping. we could close off our borders end free trade with the states and thrive. We have more oil more crops and the clean water. we have 600 murders a year you have 30000. you sent 50000 boys to their deaths in a war you could not win in vietnam. I read one post that you could take out Canada ... good luck with that. you would be fighting the whole British commonwealth, most of eastern europe, mostlikely Russia there is no way you would win that fight it would be dumb to even think it. I actually have a friend in the states that travels with a Canadian flag pin on his jacket because of not wanting negativity when visiting in a foreign land. Oldollie what is the official language of the US....moron I expect

Not to be a troll Cynicalgrammar but it seems a lot of the time when the states invaded somewhere what they actually were looking for or came to conquer either wasn`t there or not worth it.

We got drunk, burned down the white house, got bored and left. After we won.

Canada didn`t win. The opposition got there and realized there isn`t anything worth keeping so they left.
As for civil wars; no one wins those. Regular war is bad enough but killing your neighbors is just stupid and tragic.

I`m pretty sure it was England who defended Canada in 1812 and during the American Revolution.

The important thing to remember is we got a dandy song out of the whole deal.

"In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Col. Jackson
down the mighty Mississip"

@carmium: While it may not have been Canada, it was our ancestors. It would be akin to the US celebrating their 13 colonies. It wasn`t the US yet, but they can still take pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors.

@McGovern: I agree, there are very few wars fought without allies.

Yes keep assuring yourself in order to say we`ve only won 1 war you had to set ridiculous stipulations "MEH DAT DOSEN`t COUNT YOUZ HAD ALLIEZ!!" Ask Japan who won WW2. I`m sure princess William will lead you guys sooo well he got that promotion from so much experince wise choice!

As for the USA invading in 1812 it wouldn`t have happened if you didn`t blockade and take our trade vessels. So who started it now?

The federal government is going to town over the 200 year anniversary of this modest, localized war, with television PSAs, websites, and postage stamps (and probably coins, since the Mint loves making commemorative quarters). But did you notice the US invaded "our territory"? That`s because it wasn`t even Canada yet, but British North America, and the troops were colonial British soldiers. The name Canada wasn`t even chosen and applied to the new country for another 55 years, and only then did the nation stretch to anywhere near its current bounds.
The implication that "Canada" as we know it fought off an invasion by the States is a bit of a stretch. It was really just a continuation of British/American hostility.

It seems so, ludicrous, that we would go to War with Canada. That`s like some retarded sibling rivalry. I could see maybe giving someone the silent treatment, or maybe making fun of their clothes, but war? Really? Meh.

@McGovern1981: Few 100. Maybe 1000? Places in Europe, Asia and Africa have been fighting between each other since somebody created the concept of dividing land into countries.

Most modern wars have alleys now because it is easier to communicate between each other, but there are still small wars breaking out that stay between the two countries.

So the answer Rodin... is one. As my previous post said.

Hey Coffe talk. What do you have? Redneck hillbillies and lots of inbreeding. Major drug problems, more shootings per day than we have in a year, a lower standard of living, and more crack hoes. Lower education standards and more depressed areas in one state than we have in our country. The US has to stick it`s nose into every other countries politics if they feel offended, and we , as neighbors have to help fight your political wars against countries we have nothing against. How about we keep our natural gas instead of selling at a lower price to you? Don`t come up here for some of the best fishing and hunting in the world. Thanks to you rednecks consuming fuel faster than it can be produced , we have experienced temps accross Canada that rivaled yours. And thanks to 911 , now we both need passports to be neighbours. They were pissed at the US, not Canada. Oh, and our health care is far and wide 100 times better. Not all of our citizens have or need to have a gun under our seats.

@jamie76 read about the Battle of Bladensburg and the burning of Washington. There`s a link to it in that wiki page you posted. As wikipedia puts it it was "the greatest disgrace ever dealt to American arms." That pretty much put an end to the American campaign to take over Canada.

i actually love how all the (loudest) american`s are having a ego fit about how canada basically sucks and not as good as the usa...
i find it hard to understand how such a large group of people can be so dumb. Canadians are -literally- almost exactly the same as americans in almost every single way.... you know, besides our igloo`s an` pet polerbears an` poo.

Do Canadians actually consider 1812 a victory? At the very least, it`s considered a draw here, considering that there were no territorial changes or anything. Though many consider it a victory due to the fact that it marked the beginning of the age where America no longer feared being imperialized by a European power as it was able to fend off the world`s largest empire without losing any territory.

Basically, one US invasion of Canada was repulsed. Three British invasions of America were repulsed and Indians were defeated. That was the war.

And I don`t know why they bring up Tecumseh. He got his ass handed to him, he was killed in 1813.

And finally, Canada didn`t exist yet. It would be akin to the US saying that we defeated Canada during the French and Indian war.

@jamie76 - don`t provoke Canada too much. They may seem like a weak country, but don`t discount nerd rage. Also they have lots of snow. Have you ever been hit with a snowball in the ear? It hurts. I don`t see a war between the two of us anyways. We don`t need their icy land, and they don`t want ours (too many black and mexicans). They are welcome to have Florida though!

um Canada, you know damn well what would happen today, in 2012 if the US decided to get frisky with you...

BTW Canada DID NOT REPEL the American forces. America actually easily won the FIRST AND ONLY BATTLE of the so-called invasion but retreated because
"American forces retreated after one successful battle inside Canada was that they could not obtain supplies from the locals."

I just want to point out that nothing I said was meant to be disrespect to Cananda [So please dont lump me in with the idiots]. I personally love our sister country, and I [like too few Americans] appreciate your deeds to the world [mostly the inclusion of hot Canadian imports].

Living right across a short river from Windsor, Ontario has shown me that in reality, our countries are not really that different and there there is a lot of love on both sides of the border.

To clear things up, it was only a small contingent of British soldiers because the brunt of Her Majesty`s military were fighting with France. The militia was actually comprised of Americans...yes americans. At the time, Canada didn`t have an identity as a nation and well over 80% of it`s population in Upper Canada were immigrants from the U.S. Basically it was Americans fighting Americans.

Also, Americans claim a stalemate because they didn`t lose land, however THEY WERE THE INVADERS. As invaders, if you don`t conquer the land you`re invading...that`s called losing.

Btw, guys that understand that Canada and the US have been brothers for the last 200 years and shared 99% of their histories are welcome up north. Others like Solvent and Zeegrr60...feel free to stay on your own side of the dotted line. Guys like you may have never heard of any of Canada`s deeds, but then I`ll wager you could hardly find it on a map anyway.

That`s right baby... try it now, in 2012... we`ll kick your ass again USA!

We might kill a few invaders...
like, three.
And we will injure at least fifty...

And... make at least a hundred or so feel really, really bad.

And...

And...

Sigh...

At least we have better strip clubs.

Not that I don`t love being all patriotic and all, but wasn`t it the UK that defended their land against the US? Sure it was called Canada, but we didn`t become a fully independent nation until 1982.

You`re also neglecting the protection afforded us by the US, even if it`s mostly to protect their own interests, they do a lot for Canada. Some could even say their fight for independence helped us gain the ground necessary for our own confederation.

Yeah, this is flame post. Would have been better if you had said "our ancestors" instead of "Canada." For instance: "My ancestors burned down the White House" would be more accurate. However, Canada doesn`t measure its worth by the wars we fight in anyway. Thanks for making us look like idiots AND a-holes in one post.

doiknowyou, True we werent a country until 1776, but we also dont claim wars that happened on our soil before then as United States wars. Also, getting northern territories under our governing was not all that war was about. It was somewhere in the middle of lengthy list. Most of this was probably just bad blood between the US, Britain, the native tribes, and possibly France. I do not remember if France played much of a role in this or not.

@Gerry: True, we were still a british colony but so were you until 1776...

Bottom line is, you tried but failed, and then the british colonies we were, crossed your border and burned down your white house. The outcome: your national anthem and a draw...
