Aftermath Of A Bird Slamming Into A Plane [Pic]

Not a gruesome photo at all, but scary considering this was a big airplane and the bird did this much damage.

That bird must have been going really fast. Imagine how much worse it would have been if the plane had been moving too.

Note the skybridge. It was uneventful. Except for the bird, who didn`t suffer long.

Stocklo says it all. The nose cone is not there to be structural, just aerodynamic. In fact, you can pop them right off for maintinence.

There is a solid bulkhead right behind it.

Not to be nit-picky or anything, but considering their relative velocities, I`d wager that the plane slammed into the bird.

Lot of speed mixed with the fact that airplanes have to be made extremely lightweight. Not to mention, they`re not made to withstand impact anyway. Usually, if you get in an accident that high up, you`re done for either way.

Amazing what a bit of speed can do, a flake of paint in earth`s orbit could go right through you.

Can`t that make the plane rip apart if it happens during flight?

That`s not that big of a plane.. And most of the "noses" (they`re really called radomes) on planes these days are made of synthetic or composite materials that house most of the sensory and communications gear, hence weaker than the aluminum skin elsewhere. But what do I know, I`m just a structures mechanic on the 777 for Boeing.

When a bird hits a jet flying at over 500 mph, its bound to do a lot of damage.
