I disagree with this. After just reading a book on the history of science, if there`s anything one should know, it`s that science consistently proves itself wrong in its pursuit of perfection.

Ultimately, it`s the height of human arrogance to suggest that, just because we haven`t figured out how to do something, it means it can`t be done by anyone, ever.

I take issue with this article. Many of these things only seem impossible because they`re viewed through the prism of today`s understanding of our universe. And it`s quite a stretch to suggest that something like a generational spaceship won`t happen. Of course that can happen. Never is a long time.

The lightsaber even though its star wars, can be attempted but the power source to hold in the plasma by the magnetic field is beyond current technology. This plasma currently is extremely hot and would do what you see in Star Wars. It is currently already doable but would require far too much energy and safety concerns to attempt.

Well that being said it is not light but plasma. Granted the sun is a big plasma ball, so we reference light with the sun.

Oh and because laser beams are said to be balls of plasma suspended in a magnetic field fired from a weapon can be deflected by a "Lightsaber" due to the magnetic field repelling each other.

Nothing is impossible. If physics says we can`t do something, then we break physics until we can do it. If humans don`t go extinct then we will do everything that is `impossible`, given enough time.

"If physics says we can`t do something, then we break physics until we can do it."

I admire your spirit, if not your grasp of logic.

    "If humans don`t go extinct"

    When, not if.

Even if we perfect space travel and spread out in all directions, its just a question of (infinite) time, until all human threads peter out or, at best, we evolve into something else.

    Have a nice day !

None of these issues are a matter of the author not being able to figure out how to do something. Indeed, the cryogenics one merely proposes that one particular method of preservation popular in movies is impossible. They are issues with the constraints of the laws of physics or a deeper reflection on what those technologies entail. Despite what the Enlightenment might have told us, the universe imposes limits on human potential.

    3. Is possible

    4. Is not as hard as they make it look, there are shortcuts. They misunderstand warp drive.

    8. Has happened, albeit for only short periods frozen.

What a pooty list. Not a single thing on it is "impossible." idk who/what io9 is but they must be a bunch of retards. Nearly every piece of tech we have nowadays was once thought to be entirely impossible, but oh hey look, we are using it all right now >.>

None of this list is "impossible". Flight was impossible 2 hundred years ago. What do so any of that list possible 2 hundred years from now.

A hundred years ago, faster than sound travel was impossible, a thousand years ago, flight was impossible, a million years ago, buildings were impossible.

It is literally impossible for any theory of physics to actually encompass every facet of how the universe works.

These are only `impossible` to our (currently) limited scope.

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." -- Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943.

The only one I would deam `questionable` is Time Travel. Steven Hawking has suggested that the absence of tourists from the future is an argument against the existence of time travel—a variant of the Fermi paradox.

People who said flight was impossible said so because they couldn`t imagine how. People who say faster-than-light travel is impossible are saying so because the laws of physics prove it is impossible. Try to see the difference people.

Zach82-"People who say faster-than-light travel is impossible are saying so because the laws of physics prove it is impossible."

The Laws of Physics as they are currently understood.

500 year ago, the Laws of Physics (as understood then) stated that the stars orbited the earth. (this was verifiable through observation.)

75 year ago, the Laws of Physics (as understood then) said that traveling faster than sound was impossible (in fact, said it was a barrier that would destroy any craft that reached it).

    Imagine what we`ll understand tomorrow.

Most of the arguments make sense ... with the current state of technology, knowledge and understanding. But let`s not forget that it wasn`t that long ago that the world was flat and science was supernatural. Not saying any of these things WILL be possible, but I wouldn`t dare to presume that I know they won`t.
