Thanks. That was from the 4th out on the boat this year. Somehow my friend Vicki and I ended up with really good pictures. Hers looks like Katharine Hepburn with the flag wrapped over her head. I like how you can see the sun and the reflection of the sun on the water through my sunglasses.

@HG: Reagan inherited "stagflation" and it didn`t stop him from being the greatest PotUS since Jefferson!

Bush "inherited" A-Q and the 9/11 attacks. A-Q started the whole operation during Clinton`s term, July 2000 iirc...

Doesn`t stop people from blaming HIM for the wars, the cost of the wars, & etc.

Every president has challenges to overcome. >Bush? Won the war! Kept the economy chugging! Signed stupid stimulus (boo!)
>Obama? Pulling out of Afghanistan! Attacks Libya but NOT Syria! Economy in the shiiter and unemployment way, WAY up! Vows to TAX and SPEND even MORE!

"Now I had contemplated lecturing @HG on the REAL measure being the AVERAGE unemployment over 4 years, NOT a "single data-point" eh?
Hopefully he`ll figure that out for himself... "

That is totally unfair. We hit a recession full force in the last year of Bush`s term. Obama inherited it and had to deal with it for his whole term.

I`d say the real test is what the change in unemployment was over 4 years.

@5Cats: Yes, it`s mostly state and local governments but it`s also postal workers, which is federal. The federal government can also help states with funding but that`s not really happening much. I`m really not sure where you got the idea that Obama has increased the public sector. I would look at these graphs:

@FP: your article seems to be saying that STATE public-sector jobs are being cut. Which is highly understandable since THEY`RE BROKE and all...
iirc: The Federal public-sector has actaully increased, AND gotten hefty raises under Obama. Not neccessarily a "bad thing" but highly questionable in the middle of a huge recession, eh?

Um, NO! lolz! I just looked (and quoted) the wrong line is all. I`m very aware of the US system, moreso than many Americans I`d say...

Now I had contemplated lecturing @HG on the REAL measure being the AVERAGE unemployment over 4 years, NOT a "single data-point" eh?
Hopefully he`ll figure that out for himself...

Hint: Black unemployment under Bush = 6% (apx)
Under Obama = 12% (apx)
Also note that for Black males it`s higher than that, since Black Females have better employment rates...

But YES @FP! I did indeed pull a major boner! (Old fashioned term for making a mistake, plus it`s funny to say!)

Again, everyone is ignoring one of the main reasons the unemployment rate is higher among African Americans: public sector layoffs. Both parties deserve blame for this; the Republicans for insisting that the government shed jobs during a recession and then blaming the Democratic president for not lowering the unemployment rate, and the Democrats for going along with it.

Anyway, here`s an article:Link

The difference is how Republicans would try to help this guy: create him a job.

Liberals would help him buy taking money from people with jobs and simply give it to him.

(Like how they probably used tax payer dollars to pay him to lay there for the photo.)

First of all, kudos for responding. I appreciate when someone has enough guts to admit they are wrong. You get respect points from me.

Second of all, all kidding aside, have you always thought Obama took office in Jan 2008? It really would explain why you have such a bad opinion of him. The stats from Jan 2008 - Jan 2009 are the single worst year of the economic downturn and attributing them to Obama instead of Bush would make such a huge difference when comparing the two. You are Canadian so it would be understandable if you had the dates wrong. Most Americans don`t even know.

"By YOUR chart @HG: Is YOUR OWN chart "good enough" for you?
Chart #1:
Jan 08: Black unemployment = 8.0% (apx)
Aug 11: Black Unemployment = 16.7% (peak)

Well, it`s "only" DOUBLE not triple! You win, have a cookie! Blacks are SO MUCH better off now than under mean old Bush! "

Well that is interesting. You know what is more interesting? THAT OBAMA TOOK OFFICE IN JANUARY 2009. 2009. Not 2008. 2009. Oh, at that point unemployment among blacks was 14%.

Jesus tap dancing Christ. If you are going to enter into a political discussion, at the very least can you try to remember when the guy took office? Is that why you think Obama has been so terrible? Because you blame him for stats from Jan 2008 - Jan 2009 Bush`s worst year?

That would explain so much.

If you are going to be roostery, sarcastic, and belittling you should probably not f.uck up soooooo badly. :)

Democrats took the House and Senate in 2006, the housing bubble was a Democrat law, which MacCain TRIED to fix (in 2006) but was called a racist by Barney Frank and other Dems.
Yes it`s Bush`s watch so he gets the blame, but ditto for Obama. Ok?

Q: How does "figure 1" (below) prove your point in any way? srsly.

You site statistics that are drastically inaccurate. Site stats from 3 years ago during Obama`s first term. Post charts that prove my point for me. I don`t get it.

"Look how BAD things were under Bush! 4.5%, 4.7% ZOMG! 5.0%!!! How awful!"

I`m confused. Are we looking at the same chart? Obama took office Q1, 2009. This chart shows unemployment at over 7.5% in Q1 of 2009.

Your own chart that is supposed to be proving your point shows unemployment going from 4.5% to 7.5% under Bush and going from 7.5% to 8.5% under Obama.

ZOMG!

This new information is fine. But are you man enough to admit quite simply that your first comment was completely inaccurate and baseless? You claimed with certainty that black unemployment has tripled under Obama. Statistics show it went up 13%. 300% vs 13%.

""Joblessness for 16-to-24-year-old black men has reached Great Depression proportions -- 34.5 percent in October, more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population" - Washington Post "

You picked the worst segment for joblessness in the country. But OK. Yes that is high. What year though? Oh I found this article. October 2009. After Obama had been in office only 10 months.

Here is a chart for you: http://tinyurl.com/7eqxo3n

Please look at the first line graph. Notice the jump from Jan 2007 - Jan 2009 (under Bush). And then how it is slightly down Jan 2009 - Jan 2012 (under Obam

@HG: Obama vowed to fix the economy in one term: or he wouldn`t deserve to be re-elected (his words)
Obama vowed that if the Stimulus was passed, unemployment would never rise over 8%, remember that?

The base for this came directly from The White House! Straight from Obama`s mouth (so to speak).

Even Huff Po recognizes that the reported labor numbers are incorrect and that black unemployment is 10% higher than is being reported.

One of the primary reasons unemployment is higher in the black community is the public sector layoffs that have been implemented by the government. A large percentage of African Americans are/were employed in government jobs. So, blame conservative austerity measures, and include Obama in that blame for not fighting against these layoffs.

"Because the current unemployment problem is BUSH`S FAULT!"

I don`t think any one president can make the economy crumble or any one president can really fix it.

But it did falter under Bush. It did falter as a result of a lot of policies that were enacted during the Bush administration.

Obama has not fixed it fast enough in your mind? Perhaps McCain could have fixed it quicker. We`ll never know. Or perhaps Obama righted a ship that was going to get much worse. Perhaps just keeping it from getting worse was an amazing job.

But let`s agree on one thing. It isn`t as if Obama has had free reign to enact any policy he wanted to try to fix things. If that were the case I would put more blame on him. But you have to admit that the Republicans have done everything in their power to block almost everything he has tried to do.

Seems unfair to keep a guy from doing the things he wants and then turn around and blame him for not

"He also has done nothing to help the market recover"

What market are you referring to? The stock market?

Jan 2009: Dow: 8,000
Jul 2012: Dow: 12,777

Jan 2009: Nasdaq: 1,476
Jul 2012: Nasdaq: 2,908

Facts are fun!

"Unemployment among blacks has tripled under Obama to nearly 25%"

It is so hard to have a converastion with you when you are so wrong so often. Please post links to back up that egregious statement.

1. According to the July 2012 relaease by the Bureau of Labor Statistics: "the unemployment rate for blacks (14.4 percent)" http://tinyurl.com/o8z3s7

2. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:"By January 2009, the unemployment rates had climbed to 12.7 percent for Blacks" http://tinyurl.com/7eqxo3n

12.7 x 3 = 14.4
I love conservative math!

I hate to break the news to you but the econoy crashed in 2009 worse than you can imagine...the effects of that crash are still being felt.

I know you think that Obama should have cleaned up the republican mess in less than one term but remember, it took bush two terms to fully make it happen...oh and he had help from Clinton`s two terms so there is always that.

what i find funny is how white people don`t even see the racism in their everyday language.

Here are two examples of how thye miss it but it is obvious:

"The republican party is racist"

"The Democrat party is racist"

you don`t see it do you?

you are assuming that these parties belong to white people and that these white people are either racist, or they should be helping out those poor little ol`minorities.

I know, still many of you cannot see what I am getting on about but just try a little.

Aka the Democrats have done nothing to lift people out of poverty. Since Obama, it hasn`t happened. Since LBJ`s war on poverty, it hasn`t happened. In fact, since LBJ`s policies, the percentage of African Americans that grow up without fathers went from 25% to 75%. Until that is addressed, there is no policy - Democrat or Republican - that will alleviate the problem.
