I call it the "Goddamn Particle" because the fact that it exists proves god is not needed. I still love the christians....they keep the Lions full....

Of course, more biased posts against people with faith in God. Truth be known, there were a very large number of comments on the finding from people saying the exact opposite.. that this `God particle` proves there is no God.

Wow, it`s a name, to me it meant a particle that is everywhere and in everything. Doesn`t mean anything beyond that to me. Nor does it offer any kind proof towards anything other than the particle in question. *facedesk*

It was originally the Goddamn Particle, because it was goddamn hard to find. Media nitwits left the damn out.

Yes - scientists (many of which are Atheist) have been looking for the classification of particle which actually CONSTITUTE god`s physical construct. Isn`t that amazing? Atheists 1. (Or rather, scientists 1^1/0)

The God particle is that piece of shmootz that God spits out, after she`s had at it in there with a toothpick.

"Higgs, an atheist himself, is displeased that the Higgs particle is nicknamed the "God particle",[78] because the term "might offend people who are religious".[79]" and "Lederman said he gave it a nickname because the particle is "so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive,"" All hail Wikipedia! (drat you college, I will site the hell out of Wikipedia now!)

If anything, the Higgs Boson is some kind of proof against the existence of God. They just call it the "God particle" because this particle is the explanation for the very nature of existence.

And tomorrow, CERN/LucasArts make a joint announcement that the Higgs Boson is in fact a Midichlorian.

"Now that they`ve proven it exists, can we stop calling it the `God` Particle?"

And it was so nicknamed because it`s short for "goddamn" particle.

This is why it shouldn`t have a nickname.
Especially one related to that invisible bearded man in the sky.

I know that it was nicknamed the god particle because of how difficult it was to find (much like "god") but still...

They should have just nicknamed it the "Unicorn" particle. How about Bigfoot? Or Leprechaun?

The sad thing about any discovery or invention, is the Religious comment. If all these people believe in a god, surely they would understand that their god puts stuff on the planet for them to discover. I am lucky, in that I was never indoctrinated with any religion; my parents decided that I would make my own decision when I became old enough. How can I get away from the bulk stupidity that is religion?

Rick_S, first of all, no. You`re reading sarcasm out of pretty much no hint that it`s there.

Second of all, sarcasm is a specific form of verbal irony that involves a strongly inflected voice, used to underline the irony. Nothing that is written can really be sarcastic.

@maddux,
The Higgs boson gives mass to the universe. As it is that important it was nicknamed the god particle. So nothing to do with the fairytale they call religion.

Name God Particle came from author Ledeman`s original title "Goddamned Particle" because it`d been so difficult and elusive. Publishing company encouraged him to change the name. That`s all. Here`s a linky on the whole discussion of the name, etc., in case you`re actually interested.

These posts must be trolling, I was going to say do they take everything they read literally, then i thought back to the bible and i`d wager most of these take every word of it literally too then i forgot my point a little then I lost hope in humanity a little, then i got a little more on track.
Even if it was literally a god particle and was the traditional form of god in particle form, wouldn`t that ruin as much of most traditional religions as much as the non belief in a deity. As much as i`d classify myself as a atheist (just about) i`d probably shrug think, "guess i was wrong" then workout how best to please the omnipotent almost infinite sub atomic particles.

Myself not knowing enough about science to take part in an intelligent debate, having read about the Higgs Boson particle last weekend, calling it the "God Particle" makes absolutely no sense. Who started calling it this and why?

@Glorgan

Leon Lederman is accredited for coining the nickname, `The God Particle` from the title of his book, `The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?` However, he hadn`t intended on giving it this name.
It was originally meant to be called `The Goddamned Particle` because of the difficulty in finding the bloody thing, but under the insistence of Lederman`s publisher, he shortened it, as the publisher believed it was too lengthy and wouldn`t be catchy enough.
Ironically enough, because the media latched on the name `The God Particle`, it probably gained a lot more coverage then it would have otherwise done, meaning you may not even know the name of the Higgs Boson Particle had it not had such a controversial nickname.

Why did they have to give it that name??? There was nothing else they could have called it?? Now we have morons spewing all over the place thinking science just got owned by Jesus.

I love people who don`t know how sarcasm works (not you, Quik2TheStab!). Obviously most of these people, if not all, are joking.

Yeah, the name comes from it being referred to as the "Goddamn particle" for being so elusive. I feel like they may not be so proud if they knew that.
