Nielson conducted a survey of 1,077 Americans to determine the top 20 most powerful TV moments. Do you agree?

The moon landing isn`t even on the list. The Kennedy assassination is several places behind Whitney Houston`s death. People need to get some sense of historical perspective.

So a bunch of celebrity funerals was bigger than the moonlanding ey? Everybody dies! That is not sensational in any way.

Yep, for the most part this list was bullpoo. Whitney Houston`s Death shouldn`t have been anywhere on this list as well as several others.

Fwoggie2-"Katrina, nah, only one city."

Just because one city (New Orleans) got the majority of the publicity does not mean only one city was affected.

I live two states (150 miles) away from New Orleans. We got 6` of water through our house and weren`t able to move back in for over a year (on the plus side, my wife got to redecorate).

1,833 confirmed dead in 7 STATES, 700 missing. Hardly `one` city.

this was a BS list.
Mine would include Waco, The moon landing, The shooting of Ronald Regan, the man infront of the tanks at Tiananmen Square, and the evacuation of the embassy at Saigon.
At least this list has the JFK anouncement by Kronkite and the Twin Towers falling.

WTF is Casey Anthony?

Obama lands in the top 50 on virtue of being the first black US president. He`s AWFUL, but he was the first, there`s room for improvement.

9/11 and the Japanese Tsunami I`ll agree with in the top 10, possibly also Challenger. Katrina, nah, only one city. Horrible, not top 10.

The rest - bs. This is according to an averagely educated American who`s sub 35.

Missing that coulda been options -

Moon landing.

Berlin wall going down.

The carrier bag guy defying the tanks in Tiannaman Sq.
If you wanna go fiction - Who shot JR?
Anything from the gulf war (the first one, in 1992)

SAS storming of the Iranian embassy in London on live TV (nobody has ever taken the UK special forces on without serious thought and consideration first since)

MTV`s first ever video - Buggles, Video killed the radio star. In some ways, it did.

Nichelle Nichols vs William Shatner - first interrac

jeez are Americans thick or what... 90% of what you said happened before tv was invented, or atleast mainstreamed.
Those were newsreel news shown in cinemas you twat.
Well, this is only partially correct. Pearl Harbor, the dropping of the bombs, and Hitler`s speeches all occurred at a time when television was not widespread. However, JFK`s assassination and the moon landing occurred after 1960 - a year in which the number of televisions in the US is estimated to have been around 60 million. Many, many people watched Kennedy get shot on TV, and many more watched the broadcast of the launch of Apollo 11 and subsequent landing of the moon.

@Langer:
Tiananmen Square fell through the cracks then?
To my recollection, the massacre itself was not televised. The government shut down all transmissions during the preceding military activities some time in late-April or early-May.

1/3 to 1/2 of them were total crap. Casey Anthony? Really? That was more important than the Space Shuttle Columbia crash? The Challenger crash made it, so why not Columbia? What about the assassination attempt on President Reagan? There are much more important events than that bitch`s trial or the royal wedding.

cupstack-"I was waiting for the Hindenburg explosion"

Actually there`s a good reason. That was not a Television Moment. It was a radio/photograph/newsreel moment. It did not run on TV live.

@Simbha
It was worse for us Brits, the coverage was more disgustingly mawkish and sickeningly cloying. But even worse was the fact that it cost the British taxpayers £20M ($31M) for the ceremony and cost the British economy £2.9Bn ($4.5Bn) due to the extra bank holiday source.(source)
Hell, with the morons they polled, I`m surprised the Kardashian Wedding didn`t make the list!!!
The wedding of Kate and William is just as bad - to an American. They have no status in the US other than being global celebrities, yet their wedding was followed by our major news stations and discussed around the water coolers for days.

/sigh

Whatever. I guess everybody forgot the 2004 Tsunami and man walking on the Moon. Mmm I wonder why? Could it be that footage of those monumental events is not owned or copyrighted by any AMERICAN tv companies? 1,077 TV executives can`t be wrong though hey?

Casey Anthony & Whitney Houston made the list
but the first man to walk on the moon didn`t?
The attempted assasination of Reagan didn`t make it.

Hell, with the morons they polled, I`m surprised the Kardashian Wedding didn`t make the list!!!

I can remember even the twentieth anniversary of the first Moon landing being a big deal, and it all seeming like a very long time ago to me back then as I wasn`t even 20 myself. It`s hard to believe it`s been another 23 years since then.

Let`s review, shall we?

Television was introduced into the US in 1928. In the 84 years since then, the most memorable moments occurred as follows, by decade:

1960s: 2
1970s: 0
1980s: 1
1990s: 6
2000s: 5
2010s: 6 (in less than three years! LOL)

My, we have short memories, do we not? Where is the landing on the moon? Where is the coming down of the Berlin Wall? Where is MLK`s speech? Where is the Ayatullah`s return and the preceding Arab-Israeli War?

And, don`t get me started at this being a US-centric poll. It`s not "the 20 Most Powerful Moments of All-Time." It MIGHT be "the 20 Most Powerful Moments of All-Time IN THE US," but I doubt even that.

I agree with a handful of them. I guess it depends on your age and your values.

For example, I was 18 when the towers came down, thats memorable to me.

I do not care a rats ass about celebrities, thats not memorable to me.

This should be a survey of people who have been around to see the entire history of television. TV really hasn`t been around that long considering the history of technology.

Weak! Neal Armstrong walks on the moon-Richard Nixon resigns- edged out by pop culture clap trap. The compiler has no sense of priority or history.

How can you survey people for the the most powerful moments of all time? Question people who never lived through the majority of TV broadcasting. That is why you have the JFK assassination along side Whitney Houston`s OD. I am sure the top 30 would have included Snookie getting punched in the face.
