Interesting! I knew a little about it before, so I think there were some "embelishments" to make the story juicier.
Example: "He revealed key information about German war production..."
How would these clowns know ANYTHING about Nazi war production?

But the basis of it: The Coast Guard who spotted them, causing them to panic and leave half their equipment behind. The lies Hoover told them.
If they had been successful it would have been a serious blow to America`s aluminium production - which was critiaclly low as it was!

So it`s interesting, even if it is the "Coles Notes" version...

Yes, that`s fair criticism. Of course you wouldn`t send a spy off with detailed war plans they didn`t need to know about into enemy territory! The basic story is true, but the website that hosted it is about telling "interesting" stories, which often appears to include some element of embellishment. The basic fact that naive Nazi spies sent on a sabotage mission gave themselves up to American authorities but were nonetheless ignored at first as loonies, then executed and given harsh prison sentences rather than the warm reception they had expected, is verifiable though.

vv Yup, those are the facts! It IS a really interesting bit of history!

There`s two things that have kept it quite though, both post-war holdovers in the USA:

#1 the myth that "no invaders dared set foot in the USA!" was strongly promoted after WW2 to counter the rise of the USSR. It`s a fib of course! Several Japanese flying boats landed on the east coast (trying to light forest fires, iirc) and the 8 Nazis on the west coast.

#2: "We`re more moral than they are!" Portraying Nazis and "Dirty Japs" as the evil bad guys, then executing prisoners AFTER the war is over? Hummmm...

Lots of weird stuff happened in WW2: More than we`ll ever know!

    The Battle Of Los Angeles!

This was a great read. I feel sorry for the 8 Germans, especially the two that wanted to sabotage the mission from the get-go.

Japanese on the WEST coast (of the USA) and Germans on the EAST coast (of the USA)...

It wasn`t a mistake... I... I meant it from the perspective of the Japanese and Germans! Yeah, that`s the ticket!

Link doesn`t work for me... I can find the article and the few first sentences on the site, but for some reason it tells me that the page is not found.

    Anybody has a similar link?

That server never even knew what hit it. That`s possibly why Damn Interesting never became a really popular site, despite having some good content: they don`t have the infrastructure to cope with even a modest influx of visitors.

Anyway, courtesy of The Wayback Machine, here is the original article.

Strangely enough, I made that same mistake yesterday too. I said something about Gerry being "from the east coast". I knew fine well he lived in California which is of course on the west coast, because he`s mentioned it a few times, and I was thinking "west" as a I typed it, but it still came out "east". It was actually in my head first thing when I woke up this morning.

vv @MacGuffin: Glad I`m not the only one!

"All Quiet On The Western Front" = from the German perspective, eh? In WW1 the battle in France (and the Lowland countries) was in the "west". It`s the best (and ONLY) excuse I can come up with!

    That and "Drang nach Osten"...
