Brilliant point. However people like CrakrJak and other creationists will not understand this or are scientifically illiterate so it won`t matter much.

You can`t rationally argue someone out of a position they got there by thinking irrationally.

This is why so many people are creationists, and why so many people deny the reality of science.

    This is a good point.

    All can be debated though.

    a) The appendix was very useful back when we were unevolved, and didn`t have things like livestock and farms. It has lost it`s usefulness because we no longer eat dirt and rocks.

    b) Efficiency. How stupid would we look if we had a mouth on our back?

    c) Once again, efficiency. put it all in one place. Keep your poo clean.

#2) ALL creatures have unified breathing/eating tubes through their necks. The ones who didn`t are extinct.
#3) Where else is it going to go? Again, ALL living creatures are built that way beause it`s the ONLY way on Earth that works!
(Bi-valves are different, but still essentially the same: can you name them all?)

If you`re made of more than a few dozen cells, there`s some design rules that need to be followed.

Pinkie toes? Cats have 5 toes up front and 4 in the rear: humans could just as easily have 4 toes too!

Bad Breath: natures way of warning you to take better care of your mouth!
Same hole: if you had (lets say) ONLY the ability to breathe through your nose and ONLY eat through your mouth? Had 2 tubes running through your neck?
-it`d be mighty crowded in your neck, eh?
-if you breathed in some water, it`s be really tough to get it out!
-when working hard, how would you manage to get extra air into your lungs? We open our mouths and gasp, but the 2-tuber has no such option.

Finally: smell and taste are linked to survival: having them seperated sounds like a bad idea!

"And what does obesity have to do with choking??"

Typically obese people choke because they have the tendency to eat faster and not chew their food as well... Also, when they actually do choke, you cannot get your arms around them to give them the heimlich maneuver...

First time I`ve been really disappointed in NdGT.

There are much better examples than this, like the fact that snakes and dolphins have hip bones, or we have tail bones. In my mind the end all point against intelligent design is the laryngeal nerve, particularly in the giraffe. It is something that is so clearly the result of evolution that it ends the debate.

If you think god designed and created each creature on the planet please google "laryngeal nerve of the giraffe" and watch the video.

#2) ALL creatures have unified breathing/eating tubes through their necks. The ones who didn`t are extinct.

    Wrong.

Most animals have the two seperate. Humans are the only mammals that don`t.

That`s why, for example, dogs can stick their head in a bowl and slurp down food until the bowl is empty - they can breathe and swallow at the same time. Unlike humans.

It`s hypothesised that humans evolved the joined section as a side-effect of a more complex system of vocal cords and voicebox, positioned further back. That allows us to make a very wide range of very precisely controlled noises, which greatly enhances communication, but it requires some rerouting of the plumbing.

But whatever the reason for it is, you`re wrong.

@mesovortex: ID is the SAME as Evolution, at least some people think so.
It`s the idea that God created everything, and Evolution is part of God`s Plan.
Some think He didn`t "tinker" with things along the way, others think he did.

ID is NOT THE SAME as Creationism @HolyGod! ID people have NO trouble accepting hips on snakes! Evolution is OK with them!

@mesovortex: those animals you mention are not mammals, eh?
ID is not creationism, I`ll reapeat that!

    ID is creationism. Period.
    http://tinyurl.com/yomdce

Plus the Kitzmiller vs. Dover trial proved it was creationism.

Intelligent Design is not evolution. When ID comes across something `complex` - it stops inquiry. For example, ID proposes the bacterial flagellum is irreducibly complex. ID refuses to look further into the matter in spite of the work that has shown that the flagellum is NOT irreducibly complex, and that parts of it function on their own in other organisms. In fact, in the Kitzmiller trial, they showed that the ID proponents didn`t even bother to do the research that showed they were wrong.

ID is dishonesty. ID is creationism. Period.

@5Cats, 1)AJ`s comments suggest evolution. You don`t get us use it.
    2) No, "ALL creatures DO NOT have unified breathing/eating tubes through their necks." Insects breath through their legs, earthworms breath through their skin and amphibians, (tho they have lungs) they are not sufficient for breathing and so have permeable skins.
    3) Mammals like to hide their junk in the sewer but many other species put them elsewhere. Even the lowly snail is smart enough to hide them in their neck.

NDT is right on the money.

Elephants can fly! I`ll reapeat that!

Of course, repeating it won`t make it true.

ID is creationism in which believers pretend not to name the creator they believe in. The only difference between creationism and ID is that ID is more deceitful.

@Angilion: you`re saying that dogs have ONE tube for food and a SEPERATE tube for breathing?

That at NO point these tubes are merged?
    Shock to me...

Then educate yourself. Firstly about biology and secondly about what I wrote. Note that NdGT referred to humans choking to death because they can`t breathe and swallow at the same time. That`s the relevant point.

Of course, if you educate yourself then you`ll have to either ignore what you learn or stop being a creationist.

5cats, if you believe in evolution, and dont believe that god directly created some stuff, because it was too complex to be created by evolution, then whatever else you believe in, its just not ID.

You believe in something, which apparently has none of the characteristics of ID, and apparently you are the only one to call ID, and has nothing at all to do with ID. Thats why you had everyone confused there.

It would be kind of like if I said:
Im a creationist, I believe the big bang created the universe, and over billions of years, matter clumped together to form planets, and at some point life forms emerged and evolved over billions of years to become the apes homo sapiens sapiens, also known as humans.

See how confusing that sounds? Thats because I said "Im a creationist", and then the rest of what I said I was, is exactly the opposite of a creationist.

Pretty much the same there with you, and your "I believe in ID", and then a second later "actually, I believe in evolution"

Holy God -I alway like the fact the Big Bang theory, or Hypothesis of the Primeval Atom, was first proposed by the Catholic priest Georges Lemaître. Even the pope tried to wade into it as proof of God, but Georges told him to keep his nose out. I would say while not proof, it is still consistent with a created Universe.

"Sorry Gerry, had to banhammer your fan... Spam is spam after all!"

Did you swing that banhammer a little too hard Davymid and also hit Gerry? I haven`t seen any other posts all day from him. I emailed him. He hasn`t been able to post all day. That would be absolute and total bulls*t. Gerry`s comments are one of the biggest reasons I get sucked in to the comments of posts. Gerry cracks me up.

    vv Hey Markust.

No, I just checked the console and Gerry`s not banned (why would he be, he`s a riot). Maybe he needs to delete his cookies - I`ve had that problem before. I-A-B is held together with bubblegum and duct tape after all...

BTW the reason I said "your fan" - it was spam for some dick asian dating site or somesuch. But the spammer had taken the trouble to make the username "NOT_Gerry1of1". The man`s famous!

I see what I think is spam and the red mist comes down: I reach straight for Mjölnir and strike down upon thee spammer with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is MOD when I lay My vengeance upon thee!

OK, I`ll stop bleating now and suck up the abuse. But hey, happy accident, best way I`ve ever seen to defuse a religious flame-war, right? @5cats.

I`m an atheist and death does not worry me. Dying could be unpleasant, but I`ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I sense you`d be happy if aethiests tried to repent on their deathbeds and failed 5cats. Very charitable if that is the case.

Don`t fancy the Xian concept of heaven anyway, sounds bloody boring.

@bassman: MY father also died of pancreatic cancer (it was as if a gernade of cancer exploded in his guts) at age 49. My sincere sympathies.
Sage advice: repeatedly, every day, tell him how much you love & appreciate him before it`s too late. (his mind may "wander" near the end)

What I mean: there are treatments and cures for many sorts of cancer, but none for death. Sooner or later we all die, period. We don`t all get cancer though, eh?

I`m the biggest BOC fan at IAB! I KNOW! But the combo of the two terms struck me as `elegant`.

On your Feet, or on your Knees: You`re going to meet (Fear) the Reaper!

Of course meeting the Reaper implies an afterlife... lolz!

No, not in the slightest! Since I`m a Deist it really doesn`t matter (to me) even a tiny bit what OTHERS do on their deathbeds, eh? In fact I`d be terribly sad for them and their families, this last minute "hedge my bets" is hardly going to impress Jehova, eh? Allah even less!

may have to be dragged into the abyss,
ABYSS! (I`ve seen it, halucinations, long story)
    You should BE SO LUCKY!
Nope: it`s game over for you atheist! NO afterlife at all.

By abysss - I mean figuratively, nothing is nothing to fear if you see what I mean, its the transition that might be, erm, awkward :)

I think Angillion wasn`t clear about the diffs between dogs and humans btw - its the position of the larynx that is different, ours is low, dog is high, meaning a dog can easily close of its windpipe whilst eating, whereas we are at greater risk of choking... Angillion, correct me if I`m wrong.

I`d prefer to continue to exist however ;-) I`m funny that way!

    No worries mate!

Yes I too think @Angilion has it wrong, but was too tired to find proof. I cannot think of a mammal that does NOT have a common airway/foodway in their mouth/neck at some point. If you can breathe through your mouth? There HAS TO BE a common tube.

Most assuredly: dogs CAN choke! Just not as easily as us humans.

    ID = Evolution.
SOME folks may disagree, but this is the branch of ID I support.

So...you`ve made up a radically different definition for a phrase that already exists and already has a well-defined meaning.

    Why have you done that?

Why do you expect people to use your strange redefinition and not the established meaning?

It`s like someone insisting that Canada is in Africa (because they`d redefined `Africa` to mean `America`).

@Angilion: I`m not a "creationist" you oughta know that by now.

You`re redefining words and arguments on an ad hoc basis in order to prop up the belief that a god created all life on Earth in the form it is in now or at least very close to that form.

    You`re a creationist.

So Dogs, cats and other mammals have TWO seperate tubes: one exclusively for breathing and one exclusively for eating? Never do the two merge? Is this true?
    That`s a yes/no answer, eh?

It`s a transparent attempt to change what`s being argued about.

Obviously, you`re trying to make that change because you know that the original point, the point that was actually being made, is evidence against your favoured brand of creationism.

I am not going to give an answer to the irrelevant question you made up in order to divert attention away from the point that was actually being made. The reason I won`t do so is that giving any answer helps you divert attention away from the point that was actually being made:

Humans, unlike most animals and all other mammals, have their breathing and eating tubes joined together at a place and in a way that makes it impossible to breathe and swallow at the same time, resulting in a fatal choking risk.

I`ll also look at a dog`s throat and see only ONE COMBINED tube (at least for a very short length), and make up my own mind thanks.

So you`ll have a quick look at a small part of something you don`t understand and conclude that you know more than everyone in the world who is an expert on that subject.

    You`re definitely a creationist.

Epiglottis, and all mammals have it.

and those of all other mammals are unlike the one that humans have in the way that was being referred to in the original point - choking risk.

Yes, there`s a common section *before* the two tubes in question (trachea and esophagus) and that`s what 5Cats will see when he looks into a dog`s mouth, but that`s not the point.

If your definition of choking is food entering the trachea, then other mammals` epiglottis serves the exact same function. The "common section" is just the throat itself. The esophagus is directly behind the trachea, and the epiglottis covers the trachea when swallowing. This is true of all mammals.

Please stick to the fact: YOU said humans are the ONLY `land mammals` with a common tube for breathing and eating. THAT is obviously FALSE.

You`re right. I was wrong when I wrote that. They`re not *completely* seperate in other mammals.

But it`s also obviously wrong to ignore the key point - the setup in humans is distinctly different to all other mammals (and other animals) and that means that humans are prone to choking, quite often fatally. That is very obviously not an intelligent design and *that`s* the key point.

Humans could do a better job, in many cases a far better job, of designing humans (and other animals). It is utterly irrational to claim that they are the product of intelligent design by a god with infinite intelligence, wisdom, knowledge and power when the "design" is inferior to that which humans could come up with.

You`re using words *that already have a defined meaning*.

So they`re not your words. You don`t get to redefine them at will and then complain when other people use the existing meaning.

I could state that phoneboxes can fly and then later state that MY opinion is that "phonebox" is the name of a type of seagull. Does that mean that everyone should redefine "phonebox" to be the name of a type of seagull? If so, what should everyone call actual phoneboxes? Does everyone get to redefine words at will? How would language function if that was the case?

    @Angilion, excuse me a moment...

    **does the `happy cat` dance**

Ah! That`s better! Glad we could come to an understanding over our misunderstanding, eh? It was only a misunderstanding, no hurt feeling on my part.

I still think that there isn`t a "better way" to do it, evolutionarily speaking, or else that way would be normal! QED right?

It could be "improved" for various tasks, that`s true! But over the next 1000 years would those improvements help or hinder the species?

I`ve explained my definitions, if you know of a more accurate term please let me know! "ID" is not one single, unbending theoy, there`s lots of variations: much like Christianity OR Atheism... or Evolution for that matter...
