@MacGuffin: If Neil deGrasse Tyson is a "blowhard", as you put it, then the world needs more "blowhards" like him. He speaks out about how the US has forgotten what has made it great, its education, science, and creativity.

You say he, "doesn`t appear to do anything all that useful himself", but that only demonstrates how little know of what he has done. For example, did you know that he has testified before the Senate`s on the importance of education and science? There`s more too, look it up.

You attempt to diminish what he`s said by saying he`s, "Hardly finding the cure for cancer", but by that absurdly high standard you diminish almost all tasks, don`t you? What he`s pushing for is the kind of educational and monetary support from the government that could bring about that cure for cancer, so it`s practically the next best thing!

I don`t know who pissed in your cereal, but you`re taking it out on the wrong man.

MacGuffin - sorry for the late response. Yes, the DeGrassi comment was for you. But:
and actually going out of your way to seek attention by constantly publishing ever minutiae of your life on Twitter
What is there about this that separates him from any of the other celebrities that anybody `follows?` I expect a full report from you by Monday.

What you`re doing isn`t really arguing with someone, it`s more trying to make the post with the mosts words in the least amount of time. (All of which are not based on facts, but more on your opinion and information you pull out of thin air.)

It`s fine if you want to discuss something like this, but what you`re doing is more like a "NANANA IM RIGHT YOUR WRONG NANANANA"

@Idlerlee2:

Wikipedia`s great, isn`t it? You forgot to mention: "2000 Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive, People Magazine", though. Please, NDT - just piss off back to your day job boring schoolkids. I`ve a feeling they couldn`t stand him at NASA, and that`s why he no longer works there but is in a dead-end job running a planetarium.

Hardly finding the cure for cancer, is it? I mean really, for a supposedly-accomplished scientist, is running a planetarium (the sort of place you take city kids to show them what the sky is like out in the country) really all that? It`s marginally more impressive than the `achievements` for which Obama won his Nobel Prize, I suppose, but that`s not saying very much.
Why the scathing characterization of DeGrassi?
I`m not sure IF that question was for me, but IF so (;-)), my comments come from the fact that he`s a self-publicising blowhard that doesn`t appear to do anything all that useful himself. There`s a difference between having opinions and even being interviewed as a talking head, and actually going out of your way to seek attention by constantly publishing ever minutiae of your life on Twitter and making YouTube videos that are monologues about your views on abstract topics such as atheism. The latter behaviour is what you expect of Jenna Marbles, not of a supposedly intelligent and respected scientist.

@MacGuffin

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium.

He has his own office. So probably not sitting next to anyones desk. Yet he is incredibly respected by his peers.

What was the point of your post other than to throw out some half asses assumption that anyone who has a certain flavor with their wordings are indeed self absorbed and totally not like yourself ?

No, I saw it coming. Hence my use of that small but important qualifying word "if" at the start of my post. ;)

@ MacGuffin, no I wasn`t implying you state opinions. That is an obvious
fact not in dispute. And you are correct, we all do here.

No, that is not what was implied.

If you`re implying that I myself express opinions on here, then of course I do - this is an internet forum and not RL. That`s what forums are for. That`s what we all do here all the time. There`s a difference between having an opinion in a forum where opinions are sought, and foisting unsolicited opinions about situations that don`t affect you upon other people in RL. The guy I`m talking about would happily come up and tell you how he thought the work you`d been assigned should be done. He was, in short, a prize twat that nobody liked. The saddest memory I have of him is him going around the office on his birthday, trying to persuade people to come go-karting with him to celebrate it, and everybody made their excuses because nobody wanted to spend time with somebody that self-absorbed, vain and arrogant. I wonder if NDT goes solo go-karting?

Can you imagine working with someone that self-abosorbed, vain and cursed with just enough abstract intelligence to make both of those qualities even worse? He`d waste your time constantly by talking at you and telling you fifteen ways you didn`t need or want to know how to do even the simplest task, then stand there with a smug look that says "Aren`t I clever? Sorry you don`t have time to do that thing you were meant to do now". Come to think of it, I *have* worked with someone exactly like that. They made him sit in a separate room on his own in the end. I wonder how far NDT`s desk is from any of his colleagues`?

I don`t get why people keep calling him an attention whore. He does something, and everyone posts and talks about it. It`s people like you guys posting him and bringing him up that give this attention. Not like he`s asking to be posted on these sites..

@Mad_Gremlyn: You say that like there`s something bad about that. ;-)

As far as Pluto goes, either Pluto is not a planet, or Pluto and a bunch of other similarly sized objects (including some we will probably find in the future) are *all* planets. Things just get crazy if you start accepting all Pluto and greater sized objects as planets (plus that`s a pretty arbitrary point to pick), and it just gets silly if you make an exception for one particular rock for purely historical/sentimental reasons.

Reclassifying Pluto and Pluto-like objects was the most sensible thing to do.
