"Secondly, what makes you think they skin them alive? As a person who has skinned several animals (for food and furs), I can tell you that even the thought of attempting to skin something while it is alive is counterproductive. Killing the animal first makes the task infinitely easier."

There has been video of animals skinned alive, or at least not fully dead yet in china, however I`ve also seen footage of the same from america, russia, various other places. Sometimes people are [email protected], it has nothing to do with country of origin, they are just horrible individuals.

The worst part is he is charging 10 kuai for them. That`s £1. Far too expensive!

@RobSwindol - "what makes you think they skin them alive?"

Apparently the fur stays in better condition, China do in fact allow live animal skinning as shown in this video (graphic)

"I`m by no means racist but I swear that the Chinese have NO sympathy for animals if they do this and are able to skin cats and dogs alive for the fur trade."

First off, if you start a sentence with "I`m not racist, but"... then you`re probably racist.

Secondly, what makes you think they skin them alive? As a person who has skinned several animals (for food and furs), I can tell you that even the thought of attempting to skin something while it is alive is counterproductive. Killing the animal first makes the task infinitely easier.

I`m pretty sure it`s the truth.
There`s been TWO petitions on Care2 to get China to stop selling these live animals (since they most often die). I think it`s appalling. I`m by no means racist but I swear that the Chinese have NO sympathy for animals if they do this and are able to skin cats and dogs alive for the fur trade.

Well - there was nothing said about usage. Just that they are 10 kuai (about a buck fifty). People keep little turtles as pets all the time there - I had three.

However, whether or not these are being used as keychains does not take away from the fact that there is an appalling lack of respect for life in China.

yeah Rick I get that, so why did things not cost 20 fold less when manufacturing moved over TO China? Don`t answer it, it`s a rhetorical question

And goldfish in women`s shoes are any better?

"...so why should it cost a lot more when they move back here. There is already infrastructure"

Because there they make less than a dollar an hour, but over here, union employees will make over $20 an hour.

"Live turtles used as keychains in China"

Some anonymous blogger said so. It must be true. Until someone on here who speaks Chinese translates I am going to assume the best that these are meant to be taken home and put in a big bowl. Look at the top of the straps - they are way too thin for long wear. I believe that is done on purpose so you don`t fling it all around on the way home.

Did anyone notice things costing a LOT LESS when manufacturing quietly moved to China in the 90`s ? Exactly, so why should it cost a lot more when they move back here. There is already infrastructure

this and so many more reasons (namely poison milk and lead in toys) are why we need to demand that American companies no longer buy from or base their manufacturing in China.

oh but it will cost more...yea deal with it if you want jobs back in the US.

Here`s an idea, We take the chinese and stuff them in a hefty bag and use them as boat anchors. How long do you think the turles survive without oxygen in those sealed bags? Let`s do the same to the people that sell them.

I heard about this before. They claim they put some kind of enhancement in the water that makes it last longer than you`d expect (doubt that`s true tbh). I`d want to buy one to free it from the little bag, but I wouldn`t want to support this kind of a business :s

MacGuffin, this is different (although I disagree with this as well) from the goldfish being given as prizes in tiny bags because they intend for you to put the fish into a fish bowl. These are sold as keychains where they intend for you to keep the turtle in the little bag until it dies.

It is awful, but really no more awful than the goldfish held in small plastic bags containing tiny amounts of water you still see being given away as `prizes` in fairgrounds in Britain. There was talk of banning the practice back in 2005, but Tony Bliar (no spelling mistake) was too busy concocting reasons to invade Iraq to bother about little things like animal cruelty by that stage in his career.
