I counted at least 1-2 seconds between flash-and-thunder. 1-2 miles away then, surely? Euro 2012 France v Ukraine, now *that* was a thunderstorm.

    Lightning from clear sky.
Huuge amounts of energy. usually more powerful than the "regulars"
They can travel several kilometers from a storm before it strike.
I don`t know all the facts, but i do know enough to have great respect for it..

Sorry AJ, but I woke up and first thing I read was that damn anti-american rant of MacG`s and that just pissed in my Wheaties.

    So it`s her fault.

    You counted incorrectly.

To be fair, the video does freeze right at the critical juncture 8 seconds in, so it`s hard to tell in retrospect. The many replays didn`t reveal much either.

That wouldn`t be a one second gap that you`re directing my attention to there, Scuzoid, would it?

No, it wouldn`t. That`s simply where to go to actually see the flash and hear the clap.

Pussys. I live within 300 metres a 40 floor tower (DHL global head office), with the next highest thing a 38 floor tower belonging to the UN (100 metres further) and then the next thing after that in the city is about 8 floors high. The bloody tower gets hit several times every summer. You get used to it, but I live so close it sounds like Al Qaeda`s blown up our head office every time.

"COuld have easily been mistaken for a gunshot "

Yes, because gunshots make flashes even remotely similar to lightning strikes. Dumbass.

    @fwoggie

difference between being near a tall building (with a lightning rod) and being in an open field (flat area)

    Also, sound travels at 1150ft/second.

It looks like about a quarter to half second went by from flash to clap.

    That`s pretty close.

even if it was 1-2 miles away that is pretty damn close for thousands of people to be sitting outside in a giant metal structure.......See the safety risks? haha. I`ve seen some lighting strikes like this before its crazy.

Why do people run away from a lightning strike? Its impossible for it to strike there again so isnt that the safeist place to be?
