It would be close but not as accurate as that. Some people have much bigger hands than others. Just use common sense and you`ll be fine. If you don`t have that, don`t go out anyway.

If you do this and you get more than 2 hand widths from the moon to the horizon, then hang out at Denny`s till sunup.

If you do this right... it`s the shadow puppet dog that tells you the time.

If I try to look at the sun, I probably wouldn`t see anything.. so it definitely doesn`t work for me.

Probably because you aren`t drinking your own urine. Try that and see if it helps. ;-)

It only works with accuracy on the Equator. Here in the Southeastern US, the fingers are more of 20 min to half hour intervals, rather than 15.

Really? People don`t know about this? It does work very well unless you`re hopeless, in which case, probably means you can`t set up a shelter either.

This is `fairly` accurate, and I have measured it on backpacking trips. BUT! They left out the MOST important part of how to use it. Look at the illustration at the bottom. The man`s arm is at the correct length. Strait, but relaxed. If someone just read this they would probably put their hand right by their face.....drastically changing the outcome.

@BlankTom: Air bends light.
The more air between your eyes and the sun, like when rising or setting, the more it is bent. So it does appear to your eyes that it is slower.

"The sun slows down at sun rise/set, because the light bends more near the horizons. So this doesn`t really work. "

I don`t think that`s accurate.

Tried this once to estimate the time to cook Ramen. Went blind staring at the sun.

The farther I hold my hand from my face, the more time I have before sundown!

OK for the standard average hand.
If you are of Irish descent, or a fraction thereof, (such as myself), you will have shorter, wider fingers.
This means you get to stop trekking earlier.
You dine on your wild-man`s bush-food, then take to the sack with your dearly beloved, who enjoys the benefit of your shorter, wider fingers, for a longer time, due to your early night.
(Sorry about that, imagination got the better of me!)

or, while your arm is up at that angle, you could always look at your watch. If you have problems raising your arm, look at your cell phone
