At the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago are displayed jars with real human fetuses at different stages of development. One can easily see the human embryo recapitulating amphibian, then lower animal and then primate phases; gills and tails and all.

There was a pretty definite simian snout in the process. The eyes develop late but the nostril are visible from the beginning.
Maybe when we were aquatic (like in the womb) we needed to learn how to squeeze them shut early. Are the evolutionary reasons given, for the process, later in the programm? Kinky anyone please.
