Can anyone answer this question: How do you pronounce .gif? With a G or a J? I"ve heard both, but a J sounds wrong.

For what it`s worth, I used to work in the computer graphics industry (my boss there was a member of the Joint Photographic Experts Group). As we understood it, there is no specified way for it to be pronounced, but everyone pronounced it with a hard G to prevent confusion with JIF (JPEG Interchange Format).

The "GIF Pronunciation Page" that auntiemeg32 links to points out that the Graphics File Formats FAQ states, "The pronunciation of "GIF" is specified in the GIF specification," however that is *false*. (GIF87, GIF89A)

It may have originated as "jif", but the pronunciation has drifted to "gif".

(Also, Gerry1of1 sussed out the cheat used here.)

I thought it was with a G sound. Jif makes me think of peanut butter. Not that there`s anything wrong with peanut butter, I love it, personally.

The GIF graphics file format was invented by CompuServe in 1987. CompuServe used to distribute a graphics display program called CompuShow. In the documentation for version 8.33 in the FAQ section, it states:
The GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), pronounced "JIF", was designed by CompuServe and the official specification released in June of 1987.

Irony is appears to be wasted on this forum; my comment went over many heads completely. During my 2 years full-time advanced study of CAD and animation at technical college in 1998, `gif` was pronounced as in `gift`. (It may have changed in the intervening 14 or so years)
My spelling of `Graphics` as `Jraphics` was posted with tongue firmly placed in cheek.
( To those who understood the gag, please accept my apologies, but there are some things that need explaining to those that don`t.)

I got stuck here due to 3 hits of acid, I could write pages just on that, but even so... you`re arguing about pronunciation on a forum we communicate via text....

Holy crap Fancy just how far out of touch from common sense are you? Seriously it`s called Google (then again try looking for Joogle). If they don`t have the answer try Bing, Ask, or Yahoo. I`m glad you`ve stopped mislabeling Asian material, but seriously stop posting these stupid comments already, jeez.

It`s pronounced "jif". Nickel2, it`s an acronym, so it doesn`t necessarily take the sounds of the first letters of the words they stand for.

some examples:
NATO is not pronounced N-ət-to, not the A of Atlantic
OSHA is not pronounced Oss-Ha, it`s Oh-sha
MILF is not pronounced m-ī-lf

I`ve always said it with a J, like the peanut butter. Otherwise it sounds like gift, which sounds stupid to me. Anyway, who uses GIFs these days?

I used to be a web designer and I always said gif with a hard g because the g stands for "graphics". I also pronounce .png "ping" not "pee en gee". Possibly because I got laid off from P&G and am still a little bitter about it, lol. Hmmm, maybe that`s also why I refuse to say "Jif" :)

The people who invented the format insist that it`s JIF. This is rather stupid, in my opinion for 2 reasons. First is that with very few exceptions ("giraffe" is one), "g" followed by "i" is nearly always pronounced as a hard "g." Second is that GIF is an acronym for graphics image format, the "g" in which is a hard "g."

Language is defined by the common vernacular, and since 99% of people pronounce it with a hard "g" sound, that makes it the correct pronunciation.

@Auntiemeg: I have to disagree with the article you`ve cited. Certainly the author has convinced me that the inventor of the format (for a reason that`s never made clear) *wanted* people to pronounce it "jif." But language ultimately belongs to those who speak it, not to the inventors. And I think the majority opinion of people who care about words is that since the "g" in GIF stands for "graphic," it`s only sensible that the acronym be pronounced with the same hard "g."

And again, per my last post, "jif" just makes me think of peanut butter. It`s a distracting echo that serves no purpose, in my humble squirrely opinion. =^.^=

Merriam-Webster gives both "gif" and "jif" in the written entry, but chooses "gif" in the audio. Wikipedia (which has a pretty good cadre of technical editors) also gives both pronunciations as correct. So I`d say it`s a matter of choice.

Personally, I prefer "gif." "Jif" just makes me think of peanut butter.

Cheat. They`re cropping the photos to line up the finger, not posing the model precisely. You can tell by the way the background jumps around. A steady camera wouldn`t do that.

I pronounce it with a "g," for what that`s worth. Judging by the way the background shudders, they had to realign the shot in the process of making the gif so that it centered around the finger.
