Behold, It`s Submarine Communications Cable [Pic]

Submitted by: fancylad 4 years ago Science

This is what it looks like. It"s laid on the sea floor between land-based stations to carry signals across the ocean.

What do they make it as they go? How the hell would you carry an intact cable of that magnitude?

The steel cables are for both protection against the pressure at depth and for the injection of high voltage DC to power repeaters along the sea floor.

the steel cables are for strength, not rf shielding. To pull the cable up from the ocean floor, they drag a hook along the floor until they snag the cable, then pull it up. It has to be strong. Copper would be stupid to use for such a trunk cable, when fiber is available.

Looks more like copper than fiber to me. Why would there be all that insulation and rf shielding on fiber?

Hey, looks like my speaker cables.

I am suprised to see such few fibers in the cable. I found it interesting, but I work in the telecom industry, and I do splice fiber optic lines. The real chalenge for the splicers of this cable is locating the break, and bringing it to the surface. If these cables were not maintined, we could loose communication with europe. Then how would MacG upload pics of her tatoo and cat to IAB?

"...let`s return to the juggling cats..."

Oh wait, wait, you mean "cats who juggle" not "cat being juggled"... of course!

Phew! Here`s One Now!

It is an interesting picture, but not one that I would spend ages staring at. But then I am an engineer by profession and CGLI3466 certified as part on my range of skills. I agree with the other fibre people, that would be a beggar to splice. The intelligent amongst us do tend to look at such stuff.
Now for the benefit of `jamie76` etc, let`s return to the juggling cats, pics of silly vegetables and hoards of imbeciles dressed in silly clothes infesting a shopping centre.

Magickrat

thank you for the enlightening and constructive criticism. Before you came along, I lived a life of darkness and worry, never knowing the truth about myself...then behold, you showed me the error of my ways!!

and for that, all I can say in return is, stfu.

Here`s an idea for Gerry & Jamie, since they seem to love to pitch a b1tch & cry every time they see something they don`t like in here. See that little "X" in the upper right hand corner? CLICK IT & SHUT THE FARC UP!

Agreed, splicing fiber is a pain in the a$$, polishing it is what really annoys me...

I`ll just go back to believing that the interweb is part of the fabric of space/time and I wont need to know where chicken nuggets or fajita strips come from.

@ggolbez Good thing the guys that splice this stuff are paid handsomely, otherwise that two thousand mile cable would turn up poo.

Wow, are they just structural members? I agree with ggolbez on the fiber splicing. That would just plain suck.

I absolutely hate splicing fiber. But having to do it with that much shielding has to be a bitch.
