Yeah, Larry Elder was reporting that while this was very interesting, Iran is nevertheless permitted to participate in the games even as a whole NATION, they cite their refusal to compete against Jewish athletes as a great source of pride for them. Go figure.

I think people are reacting to the "at least" part of the sentence. It implies that African immigrants are bad and that their only benefit is to provide mosquitoes with familiar food. However, I think "at least" is starting to gain some prominence in the English language as a contextually-meaningless filler phrase, such as "I`m going to go ahead and...," or "like." I doubt that overt racism was intended in this tweet, but I can see how some people might think so.

Beardofzeus

"she was openly supportive of racist right-wing politicians"

I think you`ll find they are either left-wing, or neither left nor right.

So would you say that any US competitor who openly supports Al Sharpton, or Jesse Jackson or the NBPP or any other hard-left racist politicians should be banned from the Olympics?

What hostility? If you see hostility in that then you are way over-sensitive. And also an idiot.

It wasn`t a racist tweet. Why do the titles on this site so often contain ridiculous interpretations - Chik-a-fil`s president`s words are anti-gay, this tweet was racist etc.?

It was a tweet that suggested she might be racist, I agree. However the tweet in itself did not say anything against African immigrants. It simply said that there are many in Greece.

Tasteless yes...but who is the olympic committee to decide what cultural beliefs are allowed to be present at the world games? (well...you know lol). Years of ambition and training up in smoke over something so insignificant. (to be fair though it was pretty hateful over funny). brackets!

She was referring to the African immigrants in Greece, that have nothing to do with the Olympics. And it was just a joke. I`m sure she knows that Africa is a continent, as the Nile river flows through about ten different African countries. And the West Nile virus originated in Uganda, which is in Africa, in the West Nile region.
Too bad whoever posted this article doesn`t know any of this.

You know, it`s CALLED the West Nile virus. It might as well be called "the African virus." Can it really be racist if it`s factual?

another ignorant point about this post is that there`s not an "african" team, there`s plenty of teams from africa. Africa is not a country.

There is absolutely nothing racist about what she said. WTF?
Change it to:
"with so many Americans in Greece, at least the Mississippi mosquitoes will be eating food from their own home."
As an American, I would have found this statement cute and funny.
This is so dumb. Overly sensitive, butthurt "politically correct" people.
Do you realize that she trained her whole life to participate in the Olympics? To be kicked out for this...if she wasn`t racist before, she probably is now.

Yeah, I suppose it`s a tasteless joke. Don`t see it as racist, though. Wasn`t actually derogatory. As an example: I`m Jewish. If there was a "Tel Aviv" virus and someone joked about it attacking a temple for a home style meal I may not find it funny but I wouldn`t see it, in and of itself, as an an anti-Jewish comment. There may, of course, have been surrounding issues we don`t know about.

For those who dont understand why this happened, its like this... the crop of people running things in Greece these days care very much about the appearance of things, and not at all about the substance. While this chick is a bit racist, shes hardly alone. If its OK to have neo nazis in parliament, surely its permissble to have racists in other public roles? Such is the society our parents generation has bequethed us. Now back to case of this athlete... Greeces governing sports body doesnt want any negative publicity to arise from this episode, imagine if she won a gold medal and gave interviews worldwide espousing her views or having to defend her tweets, what then? Bad PR. Thats all the counts right now, to put up the appearance of being a good little European state with good little European citizens. At the end of the day this is a meaningless excersize in Public-relations & damage control.

so beardofzeus it would not be racist to kick Greek people out of england? like your pm suggested?

also the tweet was not about the African team, but for the increased number of illegal immigrants we have: "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!"

I agree with the action. If you read the fuller story she was openly supportive of racist right-wing politicians, and had retweeted similar opinions in the past. Here in UK we`re pretty tough on racist tweets by those in the public eye. It`s a pity - one less hot chick in the olympics.

I am from Greece and i will give you my point of view
1st there was not direct racism in the comment/joke she made. African people were called "African people". so the racist part lies on the point of view of the reader (if you want to see something racist you will see it everywhere- like the half-full/half-empty glass
2nd a few weeks ago GBs prime minister, Mr Cameron, said he though of kicking all Greeks out of GB because were poor or something like that. no racism there?
3rd i would rather have on olympic games someone who speaks their opinion, even if i strongly disagree with it, than pumped up from drugs "athletes".
thank you

Good Grief! Unless she used a derogatory term for "Africans" it`s hardly worth expelling her from the Olympics ffs!

She should have used the proper, liberal approved term: "African Americans" right?? I mean left???
