Most people here are atheists already, so what`s the point of acting like an oppressed minority about this?

Regardless, this is something religious people would do. I know you disagree because of your strong convictions, but that only further confirms it.

Why can`t people just keep their mouths shut about this crap. Believe in God? Fine good for you. Don`t believe in God? Fantastic, here`s a cookie.

Keep your religion in the church/mosque/temple/sacred forest or wherever you worship, and leave the rest of humanity alone.

Seriously, I don`t get it. Why can`t the "believers" just keep silent and take comfort in the fact that if they`re right, we`re going to hell and just leave it at that.

i love the crime spree one. my catholic friend has said on many occasions that if it weren`t for hell, he`d kill some people. now i don`t believe he`d actually do it, but it`s the idea that if he didn`t believe in something, he`d be doing bad things. he won`t do something evil because he`s afraid of god. whereas i won`t do something evil because it`s evil. that`s kinda scary. i hope he stays a religious person for all our safety.

"You can`t prove there`s no god"

.. and you can`t prove there is.

When the burden of proof falls on the person to prove a "thing" exist, and can`t... the logical conclusion is that the "thing" does not exist.

patchgrabber: well since you brought it up, speaking of logically fallacious arguments, wouldn`t it be illogical to say "There is no God"? Correct me if i`m wrong, but that would indicate that someone knows everything in the entire universe. Unfortunately, we don`t know that, (why would we send a rover to mars if we did?)?

Some may think that, by the same line of thought, it`s illogical to say that `There is a God`. However, people don`t need to know everything in the entire universe to know there is a God, they just need to know God, who is actively seeking a relationship with all of us.

So pray tell, why do people who claim they live by logic say their is no God, when it is a logical fallacy?

@TheGuySmiley: Well I can`t pretend to speak for all atheists, but I`ve covered this in discussions distinguishing atheism and agnosticism. I don`t *believe* in God, but I also don`t think we can prove existence or non-existence. As a scientist, I think certainty is a big word, one not to be used lightly. It is entirely possible that God will appear and speak to people at any moment, at which time I would say "Huh, I guess I was wrong." It is also just as likely that the next time I jump in the air I will continue upward uninhibited by gravity. Both are possible, but the preponderance of evidence says otherwise, so at this time I remain unconvinced of His existence. I would not ever say "God doesn`t exist" unless I could definitively verify it somehow, but current technology isn`t advanced enough to do so. Other atheists who say "God doesn`t exist" are equally as logically fallacious, as you have pointed out.

@TheGuySmiley: For further clarification, look into strong atheism (a position you correctly identify as untenable) versus agnostic atheism (the position most atheists hold). Agnostic atheists are open-minded. If you can provide a reasonable, evidence-based argument for the existence of god, you have a good chance at turning an agnostic atheist into a theist.

There are various things we can prove, though. We can prove that religious people don`t believe the same things as the people of the same religion did a few hundred years ago. We can find strong evidence for the prosaic and non-supernatural development of the religion. We can also show scientific explanations for literally everything that religions once sought to explain. All current scientific mysteries either were not conceived 1400 years ago when the last major world religion started or have a few possible scientific explanations, we just don`t know which is right.

So we can show why religion developed, which has nothing to do with any god. We can show that no god is needed to explain anything that the current crop of gods were originally used to explain. At that point, agnosticism turns naturally into atheism.

Ya. Hasn`t with me. I`m guessing he hasn`t with lots of people on here. My guess is lots of the millions of people that are living in total misery and pain, dying of horrible diseases, or being routinely raped or beaten feel very little of his active relationship as well.

Have you ever considered the fact that your "active relationship" is simply a psychosis you have created in your own mind to desperately cling to the ancient fairy tales you`ve been brainwashed with since you were born? I mean it`s possible right?

"When the others you mentioned do the same, i`ll be open to it"

Even if the bible was meant to be taken figuratively not literally, would that be such a bad thing? Be good to one another. Yes some Christians are out of their mind, as are some Atheists. The cliche Christian that Hollywood portrays, is not at all a Christian. Do yourself a favor and quit believing cliches.
Not believing in God is one thing, but an incessant need to show your open defiance of belief in such a thing, is a little over-the-top.
All you have to do is not believe. Only difference is, if Chrisitans are wrong, they lose nothing.
It is funny that almost every culture on Earth believes in some form of higher power. Many of the cultures had no outside infulence during the time of their first written records, yet have similar stories in a supreme being.
In short, be good to each other no matter what we may or may not believe in or how we live our lives. No need to argue about it, we`ll all find out eventually

The truth is that most people are Atheists, they just don`t even realize it. If they came home to find a message from God burned into the wall above their bed and that message instructed them to kill the person most dear to them, how many do you think would actually do it? The message has just as much supporting evidence as the Bible. The God of the Bible has shown a that He is not above such requests. Any act other than the divinely requested murder would show a lack of faith (by definition). Any rationalization of the message shows a lack of faith. Any investigation into the message would be a lack of faith. A person of faith challenging my hypothetical situation would be hilariously hypocritical.

The punch line: If that person obeyed then he would be condemned and sent to jail by 12 jurors, a prosecutor, and a judge, all faithful Christians and all sworn in on a Bible.

HolyGod: actually, the effects of a sinful world can blind people to the truth. You can glimpse an understanding of this this if you studied the scriptures. You`ll even find steps on how to come to have knowledge and understand God if you apply them to your life.

While i can understand that some people would think it`s a mental illness to have faith in God, when you look at how people against faith in God are acting in these times, such as being hateful, judgemental, mocking, and scornful. It becomes a bit more clear, especially after seeing both sides of the coin, that love is the natural choice, and hate is the unnatural one. God teaches us of love, and people can learn depths of love from God, that most people have never known!

"Even if the bible was meant to be taken figuratively not literally, would that be such a bad thing? Be good to one another."

If that`s all that was in the bible, I`d be fine with it. But it`s not. The bible is full of hatred and evil all in the name of a god. It`s been used and is still used to oppress others. You may say your lovey-dovey version of god is the correct one, but these other people are deriving completely different meanings from the same texts and their opinions on what`s true and what`s not are just as valid as yours. A god, as the bible portrays, is not a god that I`d want to follow. Heaven doesn`t even seem like an ideal place to me, from all I`ve read about it. I even thought that when I was a Christian, and it`s part of what started pushing me toward atheism, before I realized all the contradictions and the unlikeliness that it`s true.

"but an incessant need to show your open defiance of belief in such a thing, is a little over-the-top. "

And would be completely unnecessary if not for religious people shoving their religions at us constantly. If not for religious people trying to make their religious beliefs laws that even non-believers have to follow. If not for religious people trying to have their beliefs taught in schools as fact.

"Only difference is, if Chrisitans are wrong, they lose nothing."

"God actively seeks a relationship with all of us"

That`s a lie. No god ever sought a relationship with me, and I was a Christian for the majority of my childhood and teenage years. There are pastors/preachers/other religious leaders who spent most of their lives teaching religion and yet later on realized it`s false or unlikely to be true. Did your god just decide to never personally seek a relationship with them so they`ll lose their faith, feel like they`ve wasted their whole life teaching lies to people, so they`ll go to hell even after pushing the religion their whole life because they`ve got a mind for themselves and logically deduced that the bible isn`t true after years of studying it? Sounds like a cruel god to me.

Debating with religious people is always futile. It`s in their nature to ignore facts. Being able to ignore facts is a prerequisite to be religious, that`s the very difference between "believing" and knowing.

To protect the lie religious leaders created "hell", which is where people who seek facts, will "burn for eternity". "God" rejects people who question "him", it`s a simple but ingenious system: the thing that easily proves God obvious non- existence, facts based upon measurable reality, is "ungodly".

Don`t waste your time with fanatics, you are not going to heal them any way, the only thing we can do is what we can to keep fanatics like Ahmadinejad or Romney out of power. A person who is willing to ignore what clearly lies before him, and adapt spirits we can not see is capable of ANYTHING.

    "God teaches us of love"

Really? I`ve read the scriptures. Have you. Might want to re-read it. I don`t see a loving God in there. I see a spiteful, hateful, evil, vengeful being.

Adam and Eve evicted into a life of hardship for eating a fruit?
Job being allowed to be tortured to prove a point out of ego?
Every person on Earth being drowned in a flood except for a few?
Telling a man to kill his son?
    Killing innocent children of Egypt?
    Turning people to salt?

Hell even the main story is evil. Creating Jesus just so he can get tortured to death so man`s sins would be forgiven? He could have just forgiven sins without having to create a son solely for the sake of being tortured.

Oh but of course he loves us. Unless we don`t love him back, then we spend eternity in a pit of misery and torture. That`s love? What scripture are you reading?

HolyGod: Many people speak of God`s love with great misunderstandings, like as you`ve posted in your last post.

It`s easy for someone to quickly skim the surface of the scriptures and say how they feel God is wrong. But the truth of the matter is God is holy and just, and directs things as He wills, for one purpose: so that all people can know God, and so that we all can love one another as he loves us.

You say the flood was not loving because God let many people die. But how do you know that mankind wasn`t about to wipe itself out? God saw we had become wicked, and loved us to intervene so we could live on.

God is the author of love, and people can learn great depths of love from His word. But God is not mocked. So, if people are reading the scriptures just to find problems with them, that`s likely all they`ll find. But on the flipside, those who are studying the scriptures to find the Lord, and His love, will find all the lessons they need.

You are so shockingly delusional it makes it kind of pointless to talk to you. You know what they say, crazy people don`t know that they are crazy.

You can read the story of the flood and walk away thinking God is "just" and does everything so that we can know him and love one another?

"how do you know that mankind wasn`t about to wipe itself out?"

Because mankind didn`t have the ability to wipe itself out.

"God saw we had become wicked"

Everyone? Every single person on Earth that died? How about the children and babies screaming and crying as they desperately fought to survive while they drowned? They were wicked?

    "so we could live on"

Killed people so they could live on? Beautiful how religious people can take the exact opposite thing and distort it.

HolyGod: I suspected that it was your inclination to judge me from the start of our correspondence. It followed the familiar path of prejudice, but I had hoped it wouldn`t for the sake of reasoning. Unfortunately i was wrong, and I`m sorry if it makes you feel bare by bringing it into the open like this.

If you feel God`s judgements and ways are not loving and holy, that`s something you`ll need to take up with Him, He listens. But it is no excuse to resort to being rude to fellow men. We can all access the Kingdom of God within us, meaning we can all be excellent if we choose.

If you want to learn the deep lessons that God has for us, prejudice is one thing you will need to let go of. It may also be wise to consider trading mockery and scorn in for love and praise.

Perhaps after then when you talk of God, it will no longer come out sounding like a clanging cymbal, but as the birds of spring sing, or as the waterfalls roar.

@TheGuySmiley, instead of refuting any of HolyGod`s points, you just spent 4 paragraphs telling him he needs to talk to an invisible thing that he doesn`t believe in and wont talk back.

    @broizfam, I`ll take it as a compliment, thanks :D

"Where do you get your morals?"
    - Don`t have any. Instead, I have ethics.

"What`s stopping you from going on a crime spree?"
    - Apart from ethics? Not a f*cking thing! Notice I`m not on a crime spree? Atheist are statically less likely to commit crimes.

"So you want to outlaw all religion?"
    - Yes but, that would be totally intolerant. I`d settle for making illegal to teach religion to minors.

"What are you going to tell your children?"
    - To choose for themselves. How about you? Did you even get that chance?

    "I`ll pray for you."
    - Thanks but, I prefer you did something constructive like `finishing the day`s work` and not blessing people. I`m sneezing because I`m allergic to dust not because demons are shooting out of my nose...

    BINGO!!!

There is literally nothing God could do that you would disagree with. So you aren`t really making judgement calls on his behavior. You`ve just chosen to accept it no matter what. If the bible said the sky was green you would be on here telling me to look deeper into my heart to accept the green sky in all of us.

I judge all stupidity and ignorance. I don`t care what it is wrapped in. You think you are right. So do Muslims. So do Jews. So do Mormons. So do Scientologists. So do Hindus. So did Greeks, and Norseman, and Egyptians. So did the primitive man who wrote on walls about the nature spirits. 2,700 known deities how lucky of you to have chosen the true one. You have a fairy tale that explains away all of life`s questions so succinctly and you lack the common sense or intellectual curiosity to search farther.

It is like some people speak a totally different language huh?

I can name a half dozen things from his book and he just glides right over them and moves into how I need to be a better person and love God. No big deal that God killed innocents in torturous horrible ways. Just shut up, get on my knees, and accept it. Which he is clearly willing to do. Must be why alter boys are such easy targets..

BTW, I feel dirty for even referring to "god" and things "he did". As if they are actual entities and events.

That is when you know something is crazy. We aren`t even debating the voracity of the bible. I am accepting it is all true for the sake of discussion and debating the events in it. And it still looks insane.

"what would you do if that stupidity and ignorance is wrapped in you?"

I could be wrong. Absolutely. God could come down from Heaven tomorrow and address the world and I would instantly change my mind. That is the difference between you and I, I base my beliefs on things I have seen and can verify. I base them on multiple sources, facts, data, the culmination of Human Knowledge. You base them off one book translated and retranslated hundreds of times from the oral stories of illiterate tribesman passed down for thousands of years which were stolen or re-appropriated from the legends of older civilizations.

LillianDulci: there is no real debate of points if there is no reasonable discussion. It only turns into a mud slinging, chest puffing mess.

A reason most faith related debates are brushed off is because they tend to be diatribes focusing on little rocks, with no real value or substance, turning into a waste of time. Especially when there`s bigger rocks study such as love, joy, faith, hope, and Gal 5:22 for example. It does no one any credit to throw these along the wayside, since we all know the world needs more love.

BTW I just noticed your response, but the fact is God is seeking a relationship with us. I used to think he wasn`t as well, until i met Him. Then I saw He had been carrying me most of my life, just as He is doing the same for many of people right now. Maybe you`ll see this fact someday too.

HolyGod: I base my facts on multiple sources as well, such as historical records, modern records, logic, reasoning, faith, spirituality, and the culmination of Human Knowledge. While i enjoy the Holy Bible, i`ve studied the main faiths that uphold love, and found that the Holy Bible has most of all the lessons beneficial to that end. I can testify that God is real, because i have witnessed Him.

But the most important thing God wants us to do is love one another. In love, mocking, quick judgements, assuming, hurting has no place. However teaching and rebuking, for reproof, for correction, or for training in righteousness can.

If someone is learning deep lessons of Love from God, to bring into a world starved of love, it`s nothing but a shame to mock or scorn them. Besides no one an stop faith in God, no matter how angry or upset they are with it, of that, history is clear. So there is no point in getting upset about faith in God.

So, if people are reading the scriptures just to find problems with them, that`s likely all they`ll find. But on the flipside, those who are studying the scriptures to find the Lord, and His love, will find all the lessons they need.
I had made an analogy in a philosophy of religion class years ago that illustrates this way of thinking.

If I take a flashlight and shine on the wall, a bright spot will appear on the wall. The flashlight is our search for truth, for understanding. Too often we assume the light on the wall is God, but the light is not the goal of the search, it is the result of the search. The more intense the search, the brighter the light on the wall. The brighter the light on the wall, the greater the revelation upon seeing it. Similarly, someone who does not search, who does not bring a flashlight, sees nothing. What we perceive as God is the by-product of our search for God...

It may simply be an appreciation of the light, pure and unblemished, not understanding that it comes from us. Sometimes, we stand in front of the light and assume we are the center of the universe, God looks astonishingly like we do! Or we turn to look at our shadow and assume all is darkness. If we allow ourselves to get in the way, we defeat the purpose, which is to use the light of our search to illuminate the wall in all its beauty and all its flaws, and in so doing, better understand the world around us.

In other words I search for truth, and not once have I found God there, rather, by searching for God you are assuming a conclusion that may not exist. If you are content with such a priori reasoning, then so be it, but don`t be surprised when you don`t find truth there either.
