"No Doctor Who."

There was, almost. I heard the Tardis briefly, and my 11yo daughter confirmed it, so it must be true.

No Jeeves. No Doctor Who. No Treasure Island or Sherlock Holmes. (Unless I missed them while putting the kettle on.)

But on the whole, yeah. Good show. Especially the NHS section. It`s been taking a lot of crap lately and it`s good to point out that most people see the NHS as something to be proud of and to value.

I started watching with a bit of a negative attitude, although I knew Boyle would pull something off, but after fifteen minutes I was settling back and watching the show with a smile.

@gladhatter No Dickens, no trains, no jet engines, no telephones, no penicillin and of the many popular sports bequeathed unto the world, only an icle bit of cricket. Most of what was there was fine, I think that it`s no great loss that the ceremony was without Tolkein.

Nice references to significant cultural materials...Harry Potter.....Alice in Wonderland etc....but no Tolkien!?! Wtf

Bean was Bean...McCartney has certainly lost a step...or two.

@Atrayu4u:

I remember in the 2004 olympics (might`ve been 2000), we were watching gymnastics and during one of the commercial breaks, there was a news promo. "tune in at 10 and hear about how [insert athlete`s name] won gold in gymnastics."

In Italy we had very few commercials. I think just 3 short interruption. The show was really good, is a shame to interrupt emotions with idiots commercials.

@Dethrose, wow, I`m so glad we have the BBC over here who don`t show adverts. Must really spoil it when it`s interrupted every 10 minutes or so by adverts!

From my state, Washington, we had the opening ceremony on TV from 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on NBC. Apparently, NBC had the monopoly on "Who`s showing the Olympics/When/On what station" and... bam, that`s NBC. So it greatly offends me that the U.S.A. has to see it, as a nation, -behind- and -after- everyone else. I would like to see it all happening with the rest of the world, no matter if it`s happening for us at 4 in the morning or not.

i loved the industrial revolution bit, to show we led the way for the rest of the world, and tim berners lee, without him we`d be writing these comments into a magazine or newspaper, and i notice most of you americans don`t like the games, is it because there is no baseball or gridiron? thats because nobody cares about those sports other than you lol

The good - the industrial revolution, the forged olympic rings + a guest appearance from Tim Berners Lee.

The bad - Paul McCartney. Nobody will surely argue that that was not his finest hour.

The ugly - the blink-and-you`ll-miss it blur of British TV cultural references that most people will barely get - they were so fast I struggled and I am a Brit. And why so much attention on pop songs and kids texting each other!!

Best bit was Her Majesties arrival... James Bond was security
from Buckingham Palace then they both jumped from the helicopter into the stadium.

The industrial revolution bit was really cool, minus the dancing top hat guys which felt a little cheesy for my tates , and the kid/dream thing was surprisingly not terrible but the whole modern music bit at the end was just awful. They should`ve finished with Mr. Bean, drat Daniel Craig Mr Bean was the real star of the show. In fact the whole show should`ve involved Mr. Bean in one way or another, would`ve beat China.

Hate dancers and dancing. Hate pomp and circumstance. Hate pageants, parades, and award shows. The whole thing would not be welcomed in Chick-fil-A because it`s...well you know.
