uh, "coming out of the closet" implies that somebody somewhere DIDN`T know he was gay.

I could`ve sworn that he came out a while ago. This was not any big surprise to me.

I always knew it and didn`t care. He is not my favorite news caster no matter who he sleeps with. I wish him success but I go elsewhere for my news.

Anyone surprised? In today`s world, why would he not?

Are his ratings down? Not that I am a cynic.

So has anyone watched Anderson Cooper`s news show lately? I`m curious if he is still sticking to the standards of journalism. He was one of a tiny tiny list of journalists I still had respect for. It would be sad if he has sold out to sensationalism.

Thank you for coming clean AJ. That is really refreshing to read on IAB.

@AJ: Naaaah, it`s OK. Good to have your opinion; it keeps things interesting. And I haven`t seen AC on TV in a long time myself.

I saw him a few times back when he was a regular reporter on the news show part of CNN. I don`t really much know anymore. The only time I ever see him, he basically just telling us how he feels.

I don`t have Cable, so I don`t have access to Cable news. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut next time hahaha.

AJ, I agree with everything you have said about journalists but you have conveniently ignored what Squirz has to say. I was watching the same news coverage of the New Orleans flooding and Anderson Cooper did a hell of a good job. He didn`t just report from the edge he was in the middle of everything. You don`t really strike me as someone who would even watch Anderson Cooper. So really, where are you getting your information?

@AJ et al: I just watched that segment AC did in New Orleans on YouTube (link below), and I`ve got to say, AJ, you`re right: He *was* editorializing.

Here`s how it went down: In the midst of the post-Katrina chaos, Sen. Mary Landrieu (a Democrat, AJ, if that helps!) was going on in Full Politician Mode, congratulating other politicians for their response to the crisis. It was a highly scripted, business-as-usual--even patronizing--response. Cooper, who`d spent three days looking at corpses in the streets, interrupted her mid-sentence to say, in essence, that her response was self-serving and out of touch.

Indeed it was. Opinions may differ, but to me, that was a *great* moment of editorializing. He didn`t have to say what he said, but I`m sure as heck glad he did.

What are you, living in the 70s?
Reporters are there to get ratings. It`s all show business now.
They cover a very few topics from a slanted point of view and are very carefull to tell you how to feel about it.

Ratings.

@AJ: LOL re: 7000th post.

Point taken. I do think, nonetheless, that AC did a good job in that New Orleans instance. All too often, out of laziness or out of a fear of offending an important source, reporters seem to just be passing along the press releases of elected officials.

Reporters are there to report the news.

There are opinion shows, and it`s fine in that format.

It just irks me when reporters get all opinionated during the course of the regular news.

It should be more "Here`s the news. You decide." rather than "Here`s the news, and here`s how you should feel about it."

@AJ: I respect your opinion on his recent reportage, but I`ve got to disagree with you regarding his calling out of the politician who was putting a happy spin on the New Orleans situation.

Cooper *wasn`t* editorializing; he was reporting the reality on the scene, and I respect him a lot for speaking truth to power at that moment. One of the biggest problems I have with mass media today is most reporters don`t have the backbone to risk offending people in power. I wish more people would demonstrate the courage Cooper did that day when he said (I`m paraphrasing), "With all due respect, Ms. Elected Official, I`m here in middle of the situation and what you`re saying is utter nonsense."

"aside from having admired him when he called one politician on her spin regarding the response to the flooding in New Orleans."

See. This is not a journalist. This is an editorialist.

Fox News has a ton of them.

I expect though, that since he is left, he`s a "Quality Journalist".

He`s just gotten very sensationalist recently.

He takes the news, and reports it with an editorial spin.

Kinda like Shepard Smith, or Chris Matthews.

I`m with you, i don`t think he`s a good reporter at all. It`s been a few years since i even watched him.. first impressions are lasting ones.. he always seemed biased, looking to get others to accept his bias. Some people buy into it, but others can see right through him.

"I`m kind of out of the loop myself since I haven`t had a TV in several years."

I imagine it is quite difficult to get a TV into a tree. From what I remember of cable news you are not missing anything.

@Markust: Well, I`m kind of out of the loop myself since I haven`t had a TV in several years. Pretty much the only time I see AC nowadays is when there`s a clip of him online.

I thought AJ may know something I don`t. We`ll see what AJ says when (if?) he checks back in.

Don`t even bother @Squrlz4Sale. Only the journalists who tell AJ exactly what he wants to hear are legitimate in his eyes. Someone like Anderson Cooper who still follows the standards of journalism just frightens and confuses him.

For the record I haven`t watched cable news for a few years. So Anderson may have changed but I really doubt it.

@AJ: Why do you say you think Anderson Cooper is a poor role model? I don`t have a strong opinion on the subject, aside from having admired him when he called one politician on her spin regarding the response to the flooding in New Orleans.

So I`m asking the question pretty much neutrally: What has he done that makes you feel he`s not a good reporter?

"Gay kids have one more gay roll model to look up to."

If they think Anderson Cooper is a role model, then they are fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked up.

He`s a pooty journalist, and an non-nice individual most of the time.

I think this is wonderful news. Gay kids have one more gay roll model to look up to. Plus the movement towards equality has another everyman face to counter the bigots false stereotypes and lies. Now if Tom Cruise and John Travolta would just come out.

Anderson Cooper never pretended to be straight, and everyone already knew he was gay. He never denied it. He didn`t feel the need to say anything one way or the other until now.

After all, I wear contact lenses, I`ve never denied wearing contact lenses, but why would I need to publicly announce it? Unless I saw people with poor eyesight facing public discrimination over their legal rights. Then I`d come out and say it. Good on you, Anderson!

"Congrats on telling everyone what we already know Anderson!"

OR

"Whatever dude. You`re just saying you`re gay, because you look a little metro, and CNN is tanking in the ratings. You think if you "come out", your station might get a few more viewers, and you might be able to pass MSNBC and get out of last place. Hope that works out for you."

I`m gonna throw those out there and see which one sticks. ;)
