If you did not read the entire letter, please feel free to go back and do so before making a comment.

and btw everything he said, I completely support.

when are we going to grow up as a people and stop caring who is sleeping with who in regards to two consenting adults?

there has not been a single shred of evidence that gays hurt children or society in any way shape or form.

It must be difficult to give up that badge. I know several Eagle Scouts. It is an accomplishment that took much commitment. All I know is I respect all Eagle Scouts.

Pen&Teller did a episode on the boyscouts of America and the gay-discrimination on their show "Bullpoo!"

Pen Jilette is a excellent narrator and its definitely worth a watch

To be fair, the Mormons bought out the Scouts. The Mormon religious group owns the BSA. But only a small percentage of troops are in affiliation with the Mormons.

Idlerlee2 is correct about the show Bullpoo, however the bias is strong in that particular show.

Either way, I never made it to Eagle, only to the rank directly below: Life.

people need 2 stop being prejudiced against gays and be actively prejudiced against non-nice individuals. it is the 21st century, after all.

sorry about any spelling errors; i`m a little impaired tonight.

Well, the Scouts are a private organisation so their leadership has every right to lay down their own rules and determine their own prerequisites; no-one is forced to join, you want in you live by their rules.

In short, if they want to be a bunch of bigoted c*ntbubbles, that`s up to them.

xiquiripat, don`t be douchy. You alienate people who would otherwise agree with you.

The founder was probably gay, first. Second, if you`re referring to his military experience in Africa, then you could just as well say he enjoyed killing white people because of his fighting in the Boer war. Or that my dad loved killing Muslims in the first Gulf War. There is no logical continuity.

davymid, I agree that private group has the right to do so. however the bsa takes federal funding and uses federally owned land at ridiculous low cost. meaning tax dollar r used to support it, thus not truly private and should not be given such consideration. I`m just glad the scouts in canada is not like this

I never really understand where this argument comes from? NO ONE has said anything to the effect that the BSA can`t make these types of rules. yet, here you are telling us that they can anyway.

yes, we are smart enough to understand the issue here and what some of us are saying is that we don`t agree.

I am an eagle scout and currently a scoutmaster. There are scouts in my troop whom I know are either gay and/or atheists. And guess what? I really don’t care, and neither do any of the other parents in the troop.

The whole no gays and no atheists in scouts is really just a stupid national policy that no one at the local level cares about (at least in my community).

That letter, while well thought out, well written and compassionate, will without a doubt fall upon the deaf ears of the BSA. What you do in the privacy of your own home, with your consenting "partner" is no ones business but your own.

@auburnjunky It`s not quite as clear cut as that, surely? A private organisation should not break the law, and discrimination is illegal, no?

@auburnjunky As Fred said, I`m fairly sure that this is illegal even for a private organisation, but that`s not the point of the post. The point is that what they are doing, legal of not, in immoral. It needs to stop.

@Tatung42, that`s great, really, but the policy is what it is. You are doing the right thing by breaking these rules, but it`s morally wrong for them to exist at all. Furthermore, I have no doubt that there are troupes where this policy is enforced and used as reason to discriminate blindly. If the rules were changed, this couldn`t happen (not as easily at least).

While they can certainly do whatever they like, I`d absolutely vote to strip them of all federal benefits. Discrimination is discrimination. The Girl Scouts did the right thing. And good on `em!

Student-Law: "I love argumentation that start with "I am not gay, however(...)"

Unfortunately, even in these so-called modern times, it`s necessary as there is still a segment of society that can`t wrap their minds around the concept of believing in civil liberties for people other than themselves.

The BSA, as a private organization, has every right to enact any legal policy they wish.

We, as free-thinking individuals, are allowed to criticize and call into question policies we disagree with. You see, that`s part of being in a free market system. The service a company provides is determined by the demand of the market. If the market shows that it doesn`t want to partake in a bigoted service, it is within the best interests of the company to change their policy.

The great irony is, the founder of the Scout Movement was very possibly a homosexual himself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Baden-Powell,_1st_Baron_Baden-Powell#Sexuality

I mean, the title of his Magnum Opus was kinda a giveaway:

I think the little pussy instead of running away should have stayed in and fought for change. That`s what a true leader would have done.
